Subject: It's Trad Dad movie & Aker Bilk From: katlaughing Date: 29 Dec 06 - 10:52 PM Just watched the movie,"Ring-A-Ding Rhythm" aka "It's Trad, Dad" on Turner Classic Movies. Aker Bilk and his jazz band were featured in it, along with Helen Shapiro and Craig Douglas (what a pretty voice!) I was too young to see this or to know much about the artists when it came out. I LOVE Bilk's clarinet playing. I had an uncle who played like that. Anyway, the movie itself is pretty funny with some great talent, including a young Chubby Checkers. Anyone else seen it and/or Bilk? Here's the blurb on it: The mayor of an English town objects to the jukebox and television entertainment at a local coffeeshop and has its license revoked. Two of its patrons, Helen and Craig, decide to line up a number of acts appearing in London for a show to prove to the mayor the value of jazz and rock and roll. They visit a television studio in an attempt to enlist the help of disc jockeys and hear many acts, though they are rebuffed at first in their efforts. They finally succeed, but the performers have to get through a roadblock set up by the mayor. Local entertainers fill in until they arrive, and the show is a tremendous success. The mayor capitulates when he is praised for arranging the show, and he joins in dancing the twist. |

Subject: RE: Ring-a-Ding Rhythm/It's Trad Dad movie & Aker Bilk From: Flash Company Date: 30 Dec 06 - 10:12 AM Remember this from when it was first in the cinemas. Acker Bilk is still playing, Toured with The Chris Barber Band a few years ago and I caught them at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. He played a marvellous version of 'South' as a clarinet trio with Ian Wheeler and John Crocker. Actually released on Timeless Records. FC |

Subject: RE: Ring-a-Ding Rhythm/It's Trad Dad movie & Aker From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 30 Dec 06 - 10:37 AM Kat--I saw that flick last night, too. While I definitely am old enough to have remembered it I'd never heard of it until last night. Mr. Aker Bilk, as he was then billed, Kenny Ball, the Dukes of Dixieland etc. etc. brought back happy memories. I had tuned to TCM to wallow in my youth with Rock Around the Clock and stayed for the Trad. I also learned that Richard Lester, the film's director, and of Beatles fame etc., is actually Philadelphia born and raised. BTW, did you notice the lack of blacks in both of those movies except as acts? Even in the late 1950s/early 60s, in Los Angeles at least were the finale of Rock takes place, dances were integrated. I don't know about Britain. |

Subject: RE: Ring-a-Ding Rhythm/It's Trad Dad movie & Aker From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 06 - 11:00 AM Thanks fellahs. John, I noticed black couples sitting at tables and also dancing in a few scenes; can't remember if it was this movie or the Rock Around the Clock, but I remember being surprised at even a glimmer of inclusion considering the era. Trad Dad was British, so maybe that would explain not knowing about it before? |

Subject: RE: Ring-a-Ding Rhythm/It's Trad Dad movie & Aker From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 30 Dec 06 - 11:24 AM RTim--All the acting was bad, and that goes for Rock Around the Clock, too. Rock, especially wasted the talents of a couple of pretty good actors. In any event, the real star of both flicks was the Music. I, didn't think Shapiro's singing was much good...I've never even heard of her before now...a Lulu (To Sir with Love) she is not. Kat, I'm not surprised at your surprise. You're not supposed to know that there was voluntary interracial interaction before the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King, Jr. [Please, anyone who responds to that last sentence, I am not saying there was true racial harmony back then, nor even close, so don't put those words in my mouth as an argument.] |

Subject: RE: Ring-a-Ding Rhythm/It's Trad Dad movie & Aker Bilk From: TRUBRIT Date: 31 Dec 06 - 03:57 PM Helen Shapiro did have rather a dramatic voice -- her particular claim to fame was that her voice was very very deep. She was quite popular for a couple of years in the UK back around 40 years or so. I saw her on tour with Dave Berry (The Crying Game) and a couple of others. Aker Bilk was/is a terrific musician. His most famous tune that I am aware of is 'Stranger by the Shore' - this was the introduction music to a teenage drama series set by the sea that ran on Sundays for about 8 weeks. The tune became an absolutely huge hit and I think would be considered his signature tune, at least in the UK....... |
