Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Kara Date: 21 Dec 06 - 07:16 PM Does he have a My Space? |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: bobad Date: 21 Dec 06 - 07:29 PM Don't know, don't do my space, dial-up. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Bill D Date: 21 Dec 06 - 07:52 PM "Who thinks Paolo is cool?"....pretty vague question. Why not tell us what YOU think, and why? Is he folk? |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Kara Date: 31 Dec 06 - 04:31 AM "Is he folk?" Well that is more or less what I was trying to get you good folk to tell me. Being the world's major authority on the subject (folk). Try this one its abit cleaner than the last PN |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Bill D Date: 31 Dec 06 - 10:22 AM played 2-3 of the links... No, he is not folk in my view. He is a young fellow striving to be 'cool', doing 'intense', modern sound. You may like it, you may not...but to me, folk shouldn't be used to cover everything that has a guitar anywhere near it. There will probably be some along to disagree. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: fat B****rd Date: 31 Dec 06 - 02:59 PM Did he write Eragon ? |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Mooh Date: 31 Dec 06 - 04:03 PM Nope. Don't think he's cool or folk, not that it's necessary to be either to be the other. From what I hear, there are such writer/performers in every little burg, none of them making an impression on enough people to be the next BIG THING. Not that my opinion matters, though Kara did ask. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: akenaton Date: 31 Dec 06 - 08:09 PM Just saw him perform on BBC hogmanay live. Didn't like him at first but the more you listen .....I think I may be hooked...Is it Folk? Who cares, he's definitely got something. Its part rap, part jazz, part folk, part pop....There's too many people on this forum with their heads up their own little compartments. I think this guy's got a big future ahead....Ake PS Happy new year from Bonnie Scotland!! |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Rasener Date: 01 Jan 07 - 03:29 AM I heard this guy some time ago and thought he had a cracking voice. That opinion hasn't changed. He is Pop and good luck to the guy. I reckon he has a great future. Just becuase somebody isn't Folk, doesn't mean that they are no good. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 07 - 06:58 AM "none of them making an impression on enough people to be the next BIG THING" He is big. Lots of "them" are. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Mooh Date: 01 Jan 07 - 07:29 AM Well "Guest", big is pretty subjective. I took the time to listen to several of the YouTube examples and provided a brief opinion as that's what I figured was meant by Kara's questions, "who thinks Paolo is cool?" and "is he folk?". I'll have another listen though, as my experience is that anything that arises from the Mudcat ooze is worth the effort. P.N. may be cool to some listeners, but all I suggest is he won't be cool for a majority of the music consuming public. There isn't enough originality in the video clips I saw and heard to indicate to me that he or they will be influencial or outstanding. I didn't find the lyrics particularly insightful, or the vocal style unordinary, or the band any better than lots of other bands working hard to make it big. That makes him average. It doesn't matter how the music is described, but it doesn't have folk characteristics to me. More like pop singer/songwriter. There may be some folk influences but that doesn't mean much. Frankly, there's lots of potential, but that applies to most of what's average. Btw Guest, if you're not familiar with this site, it's a good idea to become a member here if this stuff interests you, you'll be taken more seriously. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Kara Date: 02 Jan 07 - 06:24 AM Well big he is, been in the album top 30 charts (UK) for over 25 weeks. He quotes John Martyn as one of his main influences and has a truely beautiful voice. Folk is a hard lable to attribute but I like him. |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Grab Date: 02 Jan 07 - 11:53 AM Only know what I've heard on the radio, which was one good song and two rather average ones, so far. Certainly got potential though. But I'd say it's more acoustic pop than folk. Graham. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: GUEST Date: 02 Jan 07 - 03:24 PM Saw him on Hogmanay TV - not impressed.I always prefer talent to hype. |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: GUEST,warpy Date: 07 Jan 07 - 11:08 PM He did a free gig at the Adelphi in Hull during May last year and was great. His songs have a better than average chance of becoming the Folk of the future.I liked him anyway. The gig was pre hype for me as I hadn't heard of him.I did think he was cool and he had gave something of himself. He didn't seem produced or phoney. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Jan 07 - 06:26 PM nice jumper........ shame about the songs |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: John MacKenzie Date: 08 Jan 07 - 06:37 PM He's certainly got plenty attitude, which is no substitute for talent, which he certainly hasn't got, but hey, when's that ever stopped anybody making money in pop music. As somebody said he was on BBC TV Hogmanay show fro Edinburgh, and he looked hopped out of his eyeballs to me, and I thought he was crap. G. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Jan 07 - 06:57 PM More of a torch singer than anything. Pretty looking lad. I imagine he'll make a fair living in the music machine. |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Effsee Date: 08 Jan 07 - 09:27 PM I watched the Hogmanay prog and got angrier and angier at each of his appearances. He was hanging on the the mic stand as if he couldn't stand up without support, but the final straw for me was his rendition of "Old Lang Zine"...it's Syne for crissake...it's an sssss, is that too hard to figure out? The rest of the music was a bit iffy, Phil and Aly doing what they do efficiently without being inspiring. Karine Polwart did as best as she could considering the circumstances , (a probably hastily re-organised schedule due to the cancellation of the outside broadcast due to the weather.) But the big question for me , was why did they include Anna Massie, one of the most gifted instrumentalists in Scotland, and then proceed to completely drown her out with the band? |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Effsee Date: 08 Jan 07 - 09:29 PM Oh, I forgot to add, most of the time I couldn't make out a word of what he was singing. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: GUEST Date: 09 Jan 07 - 12:04 AM They said that about bob dylan too. The times they are a changin |
|
Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Kara Date: 11 Jan 07 - 05:05 AM I didn't see the Hogmanay thing, but I did see home on French TV looking rather hanging. I don't think it is fair to say he has no talent, his voice is very good(maybe not when he's been drinking too much, but a lot of 19 year old do get a pissed on New Years Eve, addmittidly it s better if they don't do it on the telly) and his song Last Request is beautiful. The other songs on his album have an almost McGowan like quality of lyrical directness, and an sort of proud immaturity that celebrates being young and carefree. As for hype, it's nice to see someone who can do a little more than wriggle around in very little clothing getting a bit of hype. I just hope that the music machine doesn't mash the poor lad to a plulp. |

Subject: RE: Paolo Nutini From: Cluin Date: 11 Jan 07 - 11:59 PM After the last few years in pop music, I am quite welcoming of someone new who actually sings lyrics these days. |
