Subject: BS: Drink Driving and the reality
From: Rasener
Date: 20 Dec 06 - 01:26 PM

I saw this on another forum and felt that it was worth posting here.

Drink driving and the reality

I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
you told me not to drink, Mom.
So I had a Sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
the way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
and your advice to me was right
as the party finally ended,
and the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mom
something I expected least.

Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,"
Mom, His voice seems far away.

My own blood all around me,
as I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
"This girl is going to die."

I'm sure the guy had no idea,
while he was flying high,
because he chose to drink and drive,
now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
tell daddy to be brave,
and when I go to heaven,
put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
that it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
and I'm so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me Mom,
as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say I love you, Mom
So I love you and good-bye.

I got it a very long time ago, and there was a petitition stuck on it. See Snopes. Petitions are evil, forwarding e-mail such as this are next. Providing a link or putting it in a web forum aren't so bad, though.

Here is the M.A.D.D. Activism page, if anyone is truly interested in becoming involved. This is based in the US. Maybe people in other countries would post information on how people who live there can help.

Here's another perversion of the same- with information about the perpetrators:

DEATH OF AN INNOCENT

I went to a party Mom, I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom, so I drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know you were always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom, as everyone is driving out of sight
As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom, but as I pulled out into the road
the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear the policeman say,
the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm the one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom. I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom? My life just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, Mom, and most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom. The others didn't think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is he drank and I will die.
Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying and all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have told him, Mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom, I would still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom, before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the one to die?

"(O)riginally called "Prom Night" and written by a committee at Mt. Vernon High School, in Ohio in an effort to stop drinking and driving on prom night at that particular high school"

I happened to look at the arrests posted in our local paper - a bad TV night. There were two drunk driving convictions. Each got a few days in jail and a small ($500) fine.
What the hell??????
Take away their licenses on the first offense. Job transportaation? A bus or a taxi or walk. You have abused the privilege and endangered everyone else ont he road.

Throw them all in jail sounds good, but the reality is, every jail and prison in this country is over populated, so judges are very reluctant to add more to the over crowding. So, what do we hear when a new jail is proposed? N.I.M.B.Y. or too much money.

I drive a cab for a living. More and more people ARE using cabs instead of driving drunk, at least in Madison WI.
In spite of that, one of my co-workers lost her 6 year old grandson to a drunk driver. It was his SEVENTH OFFENSE! They put him away for it, but only because he killed someone.

BTW, the only driver we have ever lost in the line of duty was killed by a drunk driver. He was driving a cab home after a small town festival where he'd been taking drunks home all evening.

Throw 'em in jail! Stack 'em like cordwood. Just get them off the road!

A friend of ours was nearly killed by a drunk/high driver this past fall. He was on the run from another, less serious, hit-and-run accident at 7:30 in the morning and rear-ended her car at a high rate of speed, jamming her underneath the trailer of a semi truck (it was on a crowded section of road and she was unable to get out of the lane). It tore the roof off her car and bent her in half with her legs over her head. Her right leg was crushed; if her car had been a little taller she would have been killed instantly. Coworkers of hers passed the wreck and didn't recognize that it was her car; one woman called home in tears to tell her husband she'd seen the worst car accident she could imagine and was sure the person must be dead.

This guy had prior DUI's. What was the point?

A week ago, a guy was driving drunk at 100+ miles an hour on the freeway here and rolled his car, injuring his 3-year-old son and killing his 2-year-old daughter, who was thrown from the car.

I'm sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, anyone who drinks and drives is a potential murderer. Alcoholism-is-a-disease, diminished capacity, whatever--I don't care. I don't care if you're plastered and drive yourself into a bridge pillar or off the edge of the bayou, but you don't, or shouldn't have the right to take somebody else with you.

Many years ago I use to drink and drive. I'm not proud of it, but the roads were much quieter then than they are now. Luckily I never had an accident - but the emphasis is definitely on 'luck'.

These days I do the decent thing.

I would have no qualms about 'shopping' someone who I suspected of drink driving to the police, as I think it is probably the most anti-social of all crimes.

It's attempted murder, no matter which way you look at it - and so easily changes to actual murder.

Most drink-drivers are not alcoholics, just people who think they can handle a few drinks better than they really can. Unfortunately, someone else is usually the victim of their mistake.

Maybe this is a little controversial, but could it be likely that an alcoholic is less likely to cause an accident? After all, they are permanently drunk, so their reactions may have 'normalised'.

No, I'm not trying to make excuses for alcoholics, it's just a (probably pointless!) theory...

Yes, less likely than another driver with the same amount of alcohol in the blood, no, more likely than another driver without alcohol in his blood.

My husband's death:
His last words were "Get me out of here fellows." this to the EMT's. He died there, coming home from an accupunturist app't. He was driven off the road into a tree.

The one that drove my Jim off the road was never caught. The whole thing was seen by men who were building a home - overlooking the site. It is something you never get over.Jim was the Light of my Life.

When I called the Dr. to inform him he said: he left here a happy man. Jim was the best person I have ever known.

I'd like to take these drunks & put them in solitary forever. They think of no one but themselves. Lower then snakes.

This happened about 8 months ago on a straight away.
A woman with 4 times the legal limit- Drove into a mini van containing a family of 5. She killed the lovely young Mom, broke the legs of a 4 yr. old, caused 200 stitches in the young Dad's face. Two other kids had "minor injuries." She worked in the bar that she left to do her killing. At first it was denied that she drank there-but the police kept after everyone and found that she was drinking there. NO ONE STOPPED her. The patrons in the bar HAD to know. To reiterate---She had 4 times the legal limit-she died too. NO DAMN LOSS THERE!

"Didn't want to get involved--Bullshit! Those 3 little kids have no Mother.

Last week a young policeman was very badly injured as he was driving his motorcycle to work. A drunk with 3 previous DWI's was behind the wheel - drove straight into him.

This insanity must be stopped-take away their cars! They do that in some states if dope is found in a car. Explain the difference. The driver does not have to be under the influence either.

No mention of drunk driving in that incident as yet, Guest. It could well be drink related but one of the recent news items says -

Inspector Colin Bonner from Bedfordshire Road Policing Unit said he thought the Passat driver - believed to be Polish - was heading south before he turned round and started driving north. Roadworks were in place near the scene of the accident.

He told Sky News: "We don't know why this driver turned around - it may have been roadworks, he may have been confused or ill.

"We are desperate to hear from anyone who saw what happened."

Having nearly had a car written off by a foreign lorry driver who thought it was OK to enter a roundabout with me on it, I think we may have two things to worry about here. One is drunk driving and one is driving to different rules. Either way it's damned dangereous:-(

Shouldn't it be called "Drunk driving" - or is the expression "drink driving" some kind of UK thing?
Probably something to do with UK law, and the requirement for accuracy in describing transgressions.
As I understand it, to be drunk is to have taken alcohol, and, as a result be suffering a measurable impairment to ones reactions/abilities. (unable to walk a straight line, etc.,)
In the UK the law states that it is illegal to drive when there is more than a certain percentage of alcohol in the bloodstream. No matter if you can cope with it better than others (or believe you can) once you pass that limit you are breaking the law if you drive.
If (and it is unlikely) you become incapable of driving safely with a lower level of alcohol in your blood that the legal limit, you cannot be done for drink driving! (but can be done for driving without due care & attention)

Similarly 'joyriders' are charged with "Taking a vehicle without the owner's consent" ('Twocking'). This is because the legal definition of "theft" is (roughly) "taking the property of another with the intent of permanently depriving the true owner", so if you take a car for a 'joyride' you can claim your intention was to return it, or leave it where it could easily be found, and thus there is no 'theft'. So it was necessary to put a law of "Taking without the owner's consent" to cover these cases and allow prosecutions to succeed.

The original song is a bit over the top. Unfortunately it happens. My nephew dated a girl all through high school. Her brother went to a dance and DID NOT DRINK. Another couple was there and the boy was drinking. His date, as she had promised her mother, would not get in the car with a driver who had been drinking asked Maureen's brother for a ride home.

There were four people in the car. The boy who had been drinking thought it funny to cut off his date's car. It went off the road. The driver was unhurt; the girl (in the back seat) went through the windshield and hit a mailbox post. She remained in a coma for months and died. Her brother was killed instantly. the third passenger had minor injuries.

The driver's family was sued - the drunk denied that he had anything to do with the accident. The family lost their home. Two families destroyed and the little prick with the bottle walked away scot free.

Joyriding sounds like a term a social worker would use in court in an attempt to get some little shit off on a charge. My car was taken from my front door at 11pm four years ago. It turned up 25 miles away supporting a motorway exit barrier.

The ones who stole were caught, they stole five cars in just three weeks, all ending up like mine, wrecked. Dealing with insurance companies after an incident like this is a nightmare, they treat you as if it was your fault. Anyway the three that stole my car were brought to court and after a very moving family history was read out the judge slapped their wrist and they left the court to go and feed goats for three weeks at a local park.

There is no joy in stealing someone's car, it should be treated as attempted murder, driving a stolen car at high speed is a lot more dangerous than walking the streets with a hammer or knife.

As for anyone driving a car with even one drink in them, it deserves a life ban from driving and your freedom taken away.
