Subject: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Dec 06 - 03:12 AM I do wish people wouldn't use three, four and five letter abbreviations for everything and expect the whole world to understand what they mean. I read the title about the RIAA or whatever it is shutting down the internet. As far as I'm concerned they could have been saying that the RSPB was shutting down the internet! I still don't know what the RIAA is. A lot of abbreviations are country, occupation or interest specific so that people outside those don't understand. What is wrong with words?? Or at least explaining the abbreviation so when you use it subsequently in the text, people will know what you mean. Rant over Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Paul Burke Date: 01 Dec 06 - 04:52 AM Oh. I thought Middle Bar Singers only sang the middle bar in each line, a bit like: ..... April .... ..... the sun ... .... April .... .... the small .... ... singing ..... .... love it .... ..... were the .... .... the small .... (In case you didn't recognise it that's from TOOAM). Back to the MDF. |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Dec 06 - 08:55 AM Ooops! Lol! My excuse is that it is part of my name so nobody needs to understand it! Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: mack/misophist Date: 01 Dec 06 - 11:20 AM RIAA, for whose who don't know, = Recording Industry Assn. of America. They can be very pushy. |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Schantieman Date: 01 Dec 06 - 11:35 AM Scarcely choral singing, Lynne - more chorusy/communal singing! As one who regularly uses TLAs in my Naval existence - the RN survives almost exclusively on them - I agree that they are very confusing and opaque to the unitiated. That's wht many people use them. ;-) Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Schantieman Date: 01 Dec 06 - 11:38 AM ...and someone was talking about G & T in the common room the other day. Turned out it was gifted and talented rather than the sort that goes with lemon. Shame. S |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Amos Date: 01 Dec 06 - 12:32 PM My son has been iden5tified as a gin and tonic? By whom? LOL!!! The RN (Registered Nurse) like all departments of the American DOD (Dunderheads On Display) could not function without acronyms, including nested acronyms in which one letter of the acronym stands for another acronym. It's part of their collective madness, a sort of institutional substitute for genuine thought about the business of destroying others. A |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: katlaughing Date: 01 Dec 06 - 05:56 PM LOL...Laugh Out Loud! Joe sent me to this thread after I used HHI in a PM, BUT I had used the meaning, first: Him/Her/It. I suppose She/He/It coudld be SHeeIT!:-) Lynne, I didn't have a clue about the RIAA, either. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: jeffp Date: 01 Dec 06 - 06:16 PM Around here, HHI is Hilton Head Island. You see lots of cars with oval stickers with HHI, especially ones where the I is the Hilton Head lighthouse. Myself, any acronym I can't identify, I Google. That usually clears it up quickly. I certainly wouldn't ask the world to stop using acronyms I don't know. YMMV |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Ron Davies Date: 02 Dec 06 - 06:56 AM Well maybe we should provide a list of all US Post Office 2-letter abbreviations for US states--so everybody can print it out and we won't have that problem. I don't think we're about to type out the name of a state every time. Actually I never have a problem asking about an abbreviation--if I can't already figure it out by context. But this is a fun thread anyway. |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Schantieman Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:53 PM TLAs are definitely three letter ABBREVIATIONS, not acronyms. What really annoys me is the all-too-frequent occurrence of RAS syndrome. (See 'Feedback' on the penultimate page of 'New Scientist', weekly. S |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: JennyO Date: 02 Dec 06 - 09:52 PM Thanks Schantieman - re TLAs. It seems that every time I've posted what I thought were facts lately, someone has come along and contradicted me. LED (Liquid Crystal Display) in the redundant thread, was another one. But as with this one, someone came along later and said I was in fact right. It's nice to be right at least some of the time ;-) Speaking of people's names in acronym form, My Guru Always Said (MGAS) has always made me chuckle. She might not be too thrilled with the abbreviation though. |

Subject: RE: BS: TLAs and FLAs From: Amos Date: 03 Dec 06 - 08:32 PM In informal DoD talk, TLA stands for three-letter acronym. The place reeks with them. An abbreviation is not made from initial letters of some phrase, while an acronym usually is, such as DOD (Department of Defense) or ASPCA (American Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
