Subject: Oscar Brand & God From: Shadowman Date: 29 Nov 06 - 09:50 PM Oscar Brand may be known for bawdy songs and lyrics, but I am trying to get information on an Oscar Brand album of spiritual material. He may have done a specialty album for the National Council of Churches or the Methodist Church Women or something. Mid-1960's. The one cut on it I remember (vaguely) is, "Who knows the color of God?" Nothing like this seems to come up on any Oscar Brand discography I've looked up around the web. Thanks again, Shadowman |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 30 Nov 06 - 10:48 AM Jimmy Driftwood wrote (I think)and sang a song titled "What is the Color of the Soul of Man". Could it be the same song? It is on a recording he made, but I'm not sure which one. |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 30 Nov 06 - 11:08 AM I'm wondering if this might have been on the album of music that Oscar recorded for the season of advent. I'm not near my home library at the moment, but it was an LP that was issued in the 1960's of spiritual material, and it also included a version of Oscar's song "The Burgundian Carol". A beautiful album which deserves to be reissued. |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: oldhippie Date: 30 Nov 06 - 06:16 PM Oscar has reissued many of his LPs on CD format, which are available on his website. Perhaps he would consider this one if he owns the master. |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: Tannywheeler Date: 30 Nov 06 - 06:41 PM Oscar is always a great resource. He keeps SOOOOOOOOO much info from forever ago on the tip of his tongue all the time. Who sang what where(& when); what's the odd line in the 3rd cho. of whatever that so&so sang in 1948 in a hoot in NYC; is such&such really trad. or did someone traceable write it in 1822; what was the campaign song that defeated whoever ran against Lincoln that year---etc, etc, ad infinitum. Words, melody, has it ever been printed in a book? Which one? By who? He's an incredible repository of knowledge, and shares it generously. God may have to let him live forever, cuz who could God ask if He forgets something and then needs to know it? About songs, anyway. Tw |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 30 Nov 06 - 07:00 PM Found it! The song is on an LP called "Singing is Believing - Songs of the Advent Season". It was recorded with the St. Pancras Boy's Choir along with Eric Weissberg and Gil Robbins. Robert DeCormier conducted. The LP was issued on Caedmon Redcords and it is copyright 1980. Write to Oscar - I would bet he has it available. |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 30 Nov 06 - 07:03 PM by the way Shadowman, you were right. The original version was released on a special LP with a printing of 5000 and it was originally recorded at a Methodist Convention in the mid 60's. Oscar re-recorded it for Caedmon, and that is the copy I have. |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 30 Nov 06 - 08:06 PM About 25 years ago I used to go hear him live regularly. This song was an integral part of his repertoire. He did it at practically every performance back then, along with "Does Anyone Remember The Horse" and a song about a gay person (male) the title of which I do not remember. SOL ZELLER |

Subject: RE: Oscar Brand & God From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 30 Nov 06 - 09:19 PM Here's the chorus, whilst you wait: Who knows the color of God, Black or white or yellow or red- All or any or none of the above? Who knows the color of God knows the color of love. I told Oscar last week that he had been discussed recently on a Mudcat threae, and he was pleased and asked how to find Mudcat...I told him, but I guess he never found it. Maybe he got busy. |
