The resort to violence is, of course, inexcusable! I hope that the person who was shot makes a full recovery and that his assailants are caught and punished.
Nevertheless, what really makes me uneasy is the mindless, flocking behaviour of the people queuing!

That's why I do *my* Christmas shopping online!

But seriously--I was just observing this morning that, combined with OJ Simpson's new book, "If I HAD Slashed My Kids' Mother's Throat Like I Was Butchering a Hog, Her's How I'd Have Done It", it has been a banner few days for "civilization"?

I'm afraid to ask what's next.

1. The robberies and shootings, and what they say about our society, are coincidental to the Play Station part of the story.
2. Yes, the Play Station part of the story is pitiful enough in itself. The level of the "I WANT" factor is sad and disgusting. The level of the "I want NOW" factor is totally out of hand, and has already crept well into the dangerous zone.

Those thugs have gone too far -- they're messing with people's religions here, barging in to the Sacred Retail Rites like that and interrupting the Holy Buying Trance. They will surely incur the wrath of the Cosmic Desired Object, whom we all hope to be able to purchase one glorious day, marked down be its name.

It's not nice to mess with Mother Retail, and I am sure fate will catch up with them and their iPods will explode and their laptops freeze and their cell-phones start speaking French.

The irony is, of course, that those parents pandering to the whims of the children brainwashed by the hype, are raising the next generation of kids prepared to start shooting when SOCIETY fails to give them absolutely everything they see fit to demand.

That is not a new low. Genocides are self-evidently much lower.

Capitalism justifies and requires greed. Like those people who are already millionaires who want more. For some reason . And companies making vast profits seeking yet more. Like British banks who already make billions PROFIT now wondering whether to start charging for having an account.

   Well either capitalism or addiction.

Also people desperate for the latest fad don't think they have a problem - they'd call what they're doing normal.

Materialism - this is MY shit.

Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

I don't see how one can call that new Sony POS "overpriced." Reasonably reliable estimates are that it costs them about $140 apiece more to build it than what they're selling them for. (List price is around $500 if I recall.)

Of course the people who "claim to have one" have been getting around 4x to 4.5x bids on eBay (at last report on my TV).

The criminals in the article may not have even known what the "product" was. They just saw lots of people where there was good reason to believe quite a few of them may have had "cash in hand." Think about it next time you stand in line to get overpriced tickets for a "name" concert.

I thought this thread title would be about the Tom-Kat wedding at a cursed castle in Italy in a ceremony where" The groom is reminded that "a girl" needs "clothes and food and tender happiness and frills, a pan, a comb, perhaps a cat" and the bride that "young men are free and may forget their promises".

Tonight's news had a story on the phenom- some people had stayed in line "for more than 39 hours waiting" for the store to open; one kid was wearing, he said, "two pairs of long johns, wool socks, two coats, two hats and three sleeping bags inside each other". (What store is closed 39 hours? Dunno.) The price - in Anchorage, Alaska- in $600 but they said that on eBay they were going for $1300.

I'm so far out of the knowledgeable loop that I don't even have a clue as to what a Playstation 3 is or does. And I dunt care.

A young lad paid homeless people $40 a day to pitch their tents!

As high as $25k on e-bay!

I suspect that the grief that the release of this new game will cause some families will be horrific.

Our local Wal-Mart had 2 for sale to the public. That's unacceptable!

Why not have these big releases done the same way as some concerts. First you go and get a wrist band, then go and get your tickets.

People dieing and families devastated because of something that's supposed to bring joy and entertainment is right up there with the balistic parents at the arena going bananas because little Johnny missed a shift in the 2nd period!!!

I think the greed and stupidity of this have been fairly well covered already. Of course, Sony could have just got the Chinese labourers building these things for a pittance to work harder, and avoid all these problems...

This is what eBay has posted regarding sales of the PS 3 and the Wii (the one my son really wants):

***Listing Policy Clarifications Update: PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii ***

November 16, 2006 | 09:58PM PST/PT

Earlier we notified the Community about pre-sale restrictions for the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii products. (Please read our October announcement.) In order to continue to ensure protection for our Community this holiday season after these items are made available by the manufacturers, the following requirements have been put in place for the sale of Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii products:

1. The item must be in your possession at the time of listing.
The listing must include a unique photograph of the item in your possession.
2. Your User ID must be clearly displayed within the photograph (watermarks will not be accepted).
3. The listing must include a clear, readable copy of the sales receipt(s) or other proof of purchase. For your protection please black out any personal information.
4. If multiple quantities are being listed, all consoles must be included in one unique photograph. The same photograph must be used in each listing.

Sellers will also be notified of these requirements during the listing process when using the Sell Your Item form, and buyers will be reminded of them when placing a bid.

I'd list all the indications our civilization is reaching new lows, but....bandwidth, storage space, typing speed and all that make it more than I care to attempt.

Suffice it to say that a look at daily news headlines, or a few hours of television, will make the point.

No, Bill~! don't start on Nancy Grace, Jerry Springer, "Cops", O.J. Simpson, Rush Limbaugh....you'll be here all day...

Well, I live in a country which is totally inundated and taken over by the American marketing and media monster, Ebbie, so you can guess why we tend to see it as an American phenomenon, creeping outwards in all directions. But you are nevertheless quite correct in what you say.

Sacha Baron Cohen ought to do a movie about Playstation mania next.

Geez, and I complain about the line-up at Tim Hortons blocking a lane of traffic on the highway. Oh well, it's not too busy at the local Tambourine Emporium franchise, maybe I'll head down there and wake the proprietor before he sells out of the latest shipment of Remos.

Never having put hand to a video game (okay I used to play solitaire on the computer until I started to miss daylight) it seems so surreal.

Why the hell can't they just wait a few days or weeks and spare themselves the aggrivation? Never mind, I know the answer, they're all fuckin' nuts!

WHY HATE SONY?

1 Their planned scarcity hype.

2 Battery fire problems are not resolved

3 They put malicious computer virus in their DVDs and CDs
Their malicious code has brought goverment computers and private consumers nothing but grief, slow computers and non functioning applications.

4 Their attempt to corner the market on hi res DVD players is the same as the war between VHS and Beta. Death to Blue ray.

"Why the hell can't they just wait a few days or weeks and spare themselves the aggravation?"

Stupidity. Herd behaviour. Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Gross immaturity. "Lemming complex". Ungovernable greed. Pathological impatience.   Lack of anything better to think about (apparently). Instant gratification syndrome. Vulnerability to mental programming through advertising. Fear of silence. Fear of confronting self. Fear of empty spaces in which one is obliged to not sleep, but think and observe. Inability to engage in self-observation.

As always, "the unexamined life is not worth living".

LOL! Well, enjoy the game, Mooh. I loved that game back in the early 70's when the Boston Bruins were the big bad guys and Montreal was the team Canadians were rooting for. In retrospect, I wish Bobby Orr's knees had held out longer. He was simply amazing in his prime.

I'm going out to the store now. Gotta see about getting some women's coats to send to our friends in Eastern Kentucky. There's a whole bunch of people down them more worried about being cold this winter than about getting some sort of electronic toy and our friends will see that the coats are put to a good use. I like the store who gave out tickets to those at the front of the line, then sent everybody home.

As for "39 hours" - that was how long they were prepared to wait - whether the store was open or not - and they wouldn't be INSIDE the store anyway, even if it WAS open, or they'd lose their place in line...

Pinto Alegre: Nov 17, 2006

BRASILIA, Brazil - The mayor of a small Brazilian town has begun handing out free Viagra, spicing up the sex lives of dozens of elderly men and their partners.

TOYS WORTH GETTING IN LINE FOR?

"Since we started the free distribution of sexual stimulants, our elderly population changed. They're much happier," said Joao de Souza Luz, the mayor of Novo Santo Antonio, a small town in the central state of Mato Grosso.

            AND THE MAYOR IS SURPRISED?

Souza Luz said 68 men over the age of 60 had already signed up for the program, which was approved by the town's legislature and has been dubbed "Happy Penis," or "Pinto Alegre" in Portuguese.
But the program has also had the unforeseen consequence of encouraging some extra-marital affairs, Souza Luz said.
"Some of the old men aren't seeking out their wives. They've got romances on the side," he said.

To discourage such illicit canoodling, Souza Luz said the city had decided to begin distributing the Viagra pills to the wives of the men who signed up for the program.

"That way, when the women are in the mood, they can give the pills to their husbands," he said.

"TALK ABOUT SINKING TO LOW LEVELS!!!!
