I've been a long time lover of all the various Scotch malts, Jap/Scotch malts, Welsh malts etc, very fond of Wisers Canadian but have just come across the BEST!! Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon -Only seen it this last month or so in Waitrose supermarkets in UK... Anyone know anything about it???? It really is delightful stuff.... Stagg brand you cannot appreciate the real meaning of "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey." Kentucky Bourbon MUST be MADE in Kentucky and aged there at least for a year and then aged at least another year (can be elsewhere if your warehouse ain't big enough)! Tennessee Whiskey and Kentucky Straight Bourbon are two different animals and though I like Jack Daniels as a good booze and a great mixing whiskey, for Manhattans and striaght drinking..............Man, Bourbon is heaven. Those central Kentucky distillers with the great limestone filtered water make the very best! Spaw |

It is surprising how many consider it bourbon. Try some Basil Hayden - another small batch bourbon. Bourbon used to be the "dirty" liquor made from the dregs of the corn....now these small batch distillers have raised it to its rightful (IMHO) place. dw |

What a shame -- but the fishing was first-rate! Them fish'd come right up to ya and take a swing, and when they'd fall down you could pick 'em up and they was pre-marinated! (Actually, WT is blended Bourbon. Bookers, Knob Creek, BF and others are, I believe, the equivalent of single malt. Both have their place!) |

Don't drink a lot of bourbon these days. Of the people I play music with, the geezers like me drink scotch, the kids drink bourbon. They have shared with me some really tasty ones, but I don't remember the names. Cannot remember when I developed a taste for WT. When I was at U of K several thousand years ago, MM was quite popular. Preparation for a date required the purchase of a half pint of MM for the lad, a half pint of Southern Comfort (YUK!) for the lass. |

I once shared a liter or so of that 100-proof Kool-Aid called "Southern Comfort" with friend as we walked along a road in a state park in Missouri. Everyone in the group was drinking it, as we had 3 bottles and it was all we could get. My friend and I blacked out, eventually; another locked himself away in a car because he was feared the rest of us, and another wandered away saying he was hunting for a certain part of the female anatomy. None of us were in very good shape the next day. I remember someone dropped a wet sponge onto a towel and we all nearly died from the noise. Gad, the things you do in your youth...and survive, somehow. |

When I moved back to Texas from Singapore in 1985, I discovered the price of even cheap scotch was ridiculous. I tried every brand of straight bourbon I could find and finally settled on Evan Williams. It sells for $21 a half-gallon at my favorite liquor store. |

Grandad drank Kentucky Bourgon, and had several very interesting decanters when I was a kid. The many regular empties were usually placed out the breezeway, where we grandkids went out & sniffed the bottles, giggling as though we were doing something naughty. My favorite decanter was one which was a golden oil derrick with the empty bottle inside, & the top was a gold cup-upside down. It had a music box built into the bottom which played "How Dry I Am." |

Discerning drinkers here have likened it to Paddy, but quite a bit cheaper. By the way, Southern Comfort is not whiskey. It's a whiskey-based liqueur, in the same way that Drambuie is. |

I picked up some Elijah Craig for the Getaway because I couldn't find any Knob Creek, and I liked it a lot. Velvety on the tongue, very mellow finish, a step up for Maker's drinkers. Some others to try for the adventurous... Sazerac Woodford Kentucky Vintage Pure Kentucky Pappy Van Winkle and for those who want a nearly overpowering Disneyland of bourbon flavor, Eagle Rare Oh, yeah. My pal Blake says you can't beat Four Roses. What the hell does he know? |
