Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: GUEST,Wesley S Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:19 PM I'm not familar with that brand. I used to like Jack Daniels black label. Also known as "Jack Black". Have you tried that one yet? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:26 PM Oh, you betcha! It's a small distillery, and only within the last 5 or 6 years can you even get it outside the immediate area. It's made in small batches and aged properly. Good stuff! Congratulations! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:26 PM Nope..but I have the remains of a bottle of JD single barrel...tasty!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:27 PM Rapaire... Where might be the "immediate area"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:31 PM Northern Kentucky...say, from Maysville to Lexington. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:38 PM Rapaire.... Errmmm...on my way with B I G shoppin bag!!! Regards etc |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Nov 06 - 03:49 PM Actually, Franklin County Kentucky is the home. If you have never had their George T. Stagg brand you cannot appreciate the real meaning of "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey." Kentucky Bourbon MUST be MADE in Kentucky and aged there at least for a year and then aged at least another year (can be elsewhere if your warehouse ain't big enough)! Tennessee Whiskey and Kentucky Straight Bourbon are two different animals and though I like Jack Daniels as a good booze and a great mixing whiskey, for Manhattans and striaght drinking..............Man, Bourbon is heaven. Those central Kentucky distillers with the great limestone filtered water make the very best! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 05 Nov 06 - 06:39 PM You betcha, Spaw. I've got a bottle of Knob Creek a friend brought me, and I'm REAL careful about sharing it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: dwditty Date: 05 Nov 06 - 07:37 PM Thank you, Spaw. I always make a point when ordering bourbon out to not bring me Jack Daniels. It is surprising how many consider it bourbon. Try some Basil Hayden - another small batch bourbon. Bourbon used to be the "dirty" liquor made from the dregs of the corn....now these small batch distillers have raised it to its rightful (IMHO) place. dw |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: GUEST,Malt man Date: 05 Nov 06 - 07:45 PM But its still (tee hee) not REAL Whisky |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 05 Nov 06 - 08:08 PM Nope, it's whiskEy. Booker's is pretty good stuff, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Deckman Date: 05 Nov 06 - 10:54 PM I like "Makers Mark" ... upon occasion! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Bunnahabhain Date: 06 Nov 06 - 03:37 AM Spot, you missed the Kiwi Whiskies. The one I had was actually reasonably good... |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Paul Burke Date: 06 Nov 06 - 03:53 AM What was that rotgut we drank about a Yankee quart of one night in North Carolina... Evan Parker, no, Evan Rutherford, no Evan WILLIAMS, that was the bastard's name. It doesn't taste quite so bad after the first 10 shots. Do they have Habsburg whiskey? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 07 Nov 06 - 02:11 PM Allo again... I'm havin it again... Buffalo Trace... Its lovely....Only a small preprandiality...know wot I mean...? Hee-Hee!! Not aware of any Kiwi whiskies, Bunnahabain... Can they be got in UK? I'd be very interested to try em... HABSBURG??? WOSSAT THEN?? INFO PLEASE!! All info most welcome..Thanks in advance... ( hic!!) Best Regards to all ....Spot |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: GUEST,Russ Date: 07 Nov 06 - 03:03 PM I'm a Wild Turkey man myself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 07 Nov 06 - 03:24 PM Some years back the Wild Turkey aging warehouses burned. All that good whiskEy in the creek, headin' for the Ohio. What a shame -- but the fishing was first-rate! Them fish'd come right up to ya and take a swing, and when they'd fall down you could pick 'em up and they was pre-marinated! (Actually, WT is blended Bourbon. Bookers, Knob Creek, BF and others are, I believe, the equivalent of single malt. Both have their place!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Nov 06 - 03:39 PM Truly, WT is NOT what it used to be. That was one helluva' fire too. Can you imagine the flames fed by all that booze? The pictures were unbelievable. Seriously Russ, try to find some Stagg, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace.......Worth the money and time to find. BTW, Makers Mark is still a kind of "benchmark" of Bourbons and that's what makes the others we've been talking about so great. MM IS Bourbon and if ya' got one better, ya' got it all!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Deckman Date: 07 Nov 06 - 04:24 PM You know ... I think I'll go out right now, in this POURING rain, and see if I can find a bottle of MM floating down the flooded river! Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Nov 06 - 04:30 PM Hell Bob, if you're going out, get a bottle of Buffalo Trace or Stagg just for comparison sake. If you weren't so far away, I'd join you for the comparison. Say.....Now there's an idea. Everybody on this thread goes out and buys a couple of bottles of good Bourbon and then we all sit around one night and compare our brands as we sample them. After about an hour or so, it ought to make for real entertainin' reading! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: GUEST,Russ Date: 07 Nov 06 - 07:04 PM Thanks for the advice from the knowledgable imbibers. Actually I am really a single malt scotch man. Don't drink a lot of bourbon these days. Of the people I play music with, the geezers like me drink scotch, the kids drink bourbon. They have shared with me some really tasty ones, but I don't remember the names. Cannot remember when I developed a taste for WT. When I was at U of K several thousand years ago, MM was quite popular. Preparation for a date required the purchase of a half pint of MM for the lad, a half pint of Southern Comfort (YUK!) for the lass. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Date: 07 Nov 06 - 07:14 PM used to drink one called Jim Beam and smoked a pipe tobacco called Borkum Riff which was flavoured with Bourbon very nice stuff |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: dick greenhaus Date: 07 Nov 06 - 07:26 PM it's not easy to find, but Dickel 12-year old (NOT their black label) is this Bourbon-drinker's pet. And I've prolly tried at least most of 'em. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Rapparee Date: 07 Nov 06 - 08:35 PM I personally prefer good whisky and good whiskEy. I once shared a liter or so of that 100-proof Kool-Aid called "Southern Comfort" with friend as we walked along a road in a state park in Missouri. Everyone in the group was drinking it, as we had 3 bottles and it was all we could get. My friend and I blacked out, eventually; another locked himself away in a car because he was feared the rest of us, and another wandered away saying he was hunting for a certain part of the female anatomy. None of us were in very good shape the next day. I remember someone dropped a wet sponge onto a towel and we all nearly died from the noise. Gad, the things you do in your youth...and survive, somehow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Deckman Date: 07 Nov 06 - 08:39 PM Southern Comfort always reminded of drinking perfume! I used to have a girlfriend that liked it. Notice that I said "USED TO!" Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Deckman Date: 07 Nov 06 - 11:46 PM Actually ... Southern Comfort kinda reminds me of raw oysters! You can enjoy the same oyster several times: once when it goes down and several more times as it comes up ... again and again! Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: John MacKenzie Date: 08 Nov 06 - 12:50 PM Thanks Dick for introducing me to George Dickel last year, it's my favourite too, can't find it this side of the pond. However I can find Elijah Craig, which I find an extremely acceptable substitute. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 09 Nov 06 - 10:34 AM Allo everybody... Done it again, haven't I? Waitrose supermarket...one bottle left...took pity on it... No Trace of Buffalo left on shelf...Great stuff!! ;-) Hopefully goin to t'whisky shop in Keswick UK (for other folks Xmas pressies!!) - they bound to have some of previously mentioned brews. Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: RangerSteve Date: 09 Nov 06 - 01:48 PM I stopped in a liquor store this morning and checked out the bourbon section. Not much on display, but there was a bottle of Knob Creek, so I bought it. I've got some next to me right now, in a souvenir cup I picked up at Renfro Valley, KY, and I have to thank all of you who mentioned it. I'm not a whiskey drinker, but this stuff is good. Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Big Al Whittle Date: 09 Nov 06 - 04:38 PM Just want to say I got a bottle of Glenlivet for only 14 quid today at Somerfield. about ten quid cheaper than usual. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: fumblefingers Date: 10 Nov 06 - 12:48 AM Evan Williams was the first distillery in Kentucky (1783), and for the price, it's the best I've found. When I moved back to Texas from Singapore in 1985, I discovered the price of even cheap scotch was ridiculous. I tried every brand of straight bourbon I could find and finally settled on Evan Williams. It sells for $21 a half-gallon at my favorite liquor store. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Spot Date: 10 Nov 06 - 03:16 AM GIOK.. Just had browse over The Whisky Exchange site...ta for link... Ermmmm - nearly £1300 for Midleton Irish!!!! Feck - didn't know such stuff existed!! How can it be "worth" that sort of money??? I guess it's like art an stuff, eh? Regards to all...Spot (stickin to Waitrose for now!!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: GUEST,Spot Date: 17 Nov 06 - 12:05 PM Allo everybody... Well...I'm back from whisky shop in Keswick, having gone armed with a list of aforementioned labels. Stagg was £120 a bottle..Summat else was £80, summat else £40..etc. Hmmmmm.... I want to chuck it down me neck not invest in it!! :-) However , I came out with some "Virginia Gentleman" well priced at around £20.. Anyone know anything on this one..it's new to me but very pleasing.. Regards to all...Spot |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Kaleea Date: 17 Nov 06 - 03:57 PM My Old Grandad, raised on the border of Texas and Oklahoma, was quite a "rough n ready" man-as my Daddy said. Grandad drank Kentucky Bourgon, and had several very interesting decanters when I was a kid. The many regular empties were usually placed out the breezeway, where we grandkids went out & sniffed the bottles, giggling as though we were doing something naughty. My favorite decanter was one which was a golden oil derrick with the empty bottle inside, & the top was a gold cup-upside down. It had a music box built into the bottom which played "How Dry I Am." |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Les from Hull Date: 17 Nov 06 - 05:51 PM Whiskey bargain hunters in the UK should check out Lidl's Dundalgan Irish Whiskey (when they have it in). Discerning drinkers here have likened it to Paddy, but quite a bit cheaper. By the way, Southern Comfort is not whiskey. It's a whiskey-based liqueur, in the same way that Drambuie is. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Lonesome EJ Date: 17 Nov 06 - 06:27 PM Knob Creek is a very nice small batch Bourbon, with a little sharper finish, smokier taste and deeper burn than smooth finish bourbons like Maker's. I picked up some Elijah Craig for the Getaway because I couldn't find any Knob Creek, and I liked it a lot. Velvety on the tongue, very mellow finish, a step up for Maker's drinkers. Some others to try for the adventurous... Sazerac Woodford Kentucky Vintage Pure Kentucky Pappy Van Winkle and for those who want a nearly overpowering Disneyland of bourbon flavor, Eagle Rare Oh, yeah. My pal Blake says you can't beat Four Roses. What the hell does he know? |

Subject: RE: BS: Bourbon From: Amos Date: 17 Nov 06 - 07:13 PM That gumshoe!! If he had more than one case a year he'd be drinking single malt scotch and calling ti Easy Street. Seriously though, I found your bourbon most accommodating to the soul, encouraging to merriment and relieving of stress, and I look forward to many future opportunities to enjoy it. It was the only reason I got any sleep at all! LOL A |
