Subject: BS: Any Fans of Bucky Katt out there? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Nov 06 - 08:53 PM He's a comic character: a crabby, rotten, egocentric siamese cat who is almost always in a bad mood. He's a nice antidote to Garfield, in my opinion, and somewhat more like a real cat in some (though not all) respects. He has even had a courtroom run-in with Judge Judy, where he attempted to misuse the law. He did not succeed. Anyone else enjoying the exploits of Bucky, Satchell, and their hapless owner? |

The comic strip runs in the Detroit Free Press, one of the best things about the Detroit Free Press, along with "Frazz" and that one about the pig, the rat and the crocodiles who live next door to the zebras. |

From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Nov 06 - 10:25 PM Scoville, Bucky is cleary a nasty little jerk who is devoid of redeeming qualities, but the mere fact that he is so egocentric that he really doesn't realize he's a jerk (he thinks something's wrong with everyone else...) is what makes it funny, I think. ;-) I've also known Siamese cats who were a wee bit like Bucky...although I wouldn't say that of most Siamese cats. |

I was gonna say that I love that Get Fuzzy comic, and Liberty Meadows too, even though the Korean guy who writes it pretends that he's a chimp all the time. The only thing that could possibly be better than Liberty Meadows would be a comic about my adventures. And hey, Guest, the comic ain't gay! Rob has been tryin' to date women for years, and he actually did date a couple in the early days of the comic, but Bucky always screws things up and they get scared off. Lately I think that Rob has more or less given up hope of successfully dating any more women or finding a happy relationship with one, but he's definitely not gay. |

The strip is simply a reflection of the contemporary crap-culture, which is a shame. My memories go back to Walt Kelly's developed characterizations in Pogo, where the depiction of a sociopathic personality had a purpose beyond glorifying trash-talk and adolescent put-downs. |

I wish our paper (Cleveland) published Boondocks, or some other more relevant, contemporary comics. |

Because it's a satire on the insecurities of modern women (primarily) and men (secondarily) and it pokes fun at many of the most ridiculous aspects of modern culture...such as rampant consumerism ("If I just buy enough stuff, then I'll be happy...") or fashion trends. As such, it has a lot to say. If you don't like it, it's merely because it has a style that doesn't appeal to you personally, but it's not devoid of real content. The others? Yeah, they're useless. Mort Walker and Dick Browne are responsible for several lacklustre comics, like Hagar the Horrible, Beatle Bailey, Hi and Lois...all of which are not downright terrible (like Ziggy), but merely mediocre. Then there are the dreadful old chestnuts like Nancy...(its only redeeming feature is an occasional appearance by Aunt Fritzy)...or Henry! Man, talk about Baaaaad comics! Get Fuzzy is a neat comic if you like clever use of the English language...the subtle approach to verbal combat. If you don't, I'd imagine its value is completely lost on you. I agree that it doesn't nearly come up to the level of Walt Kelly's "Pogo" which was a brilliant comic in every way. |

But there have been many recent comics out there, too: Calvin and Hobbes Bloom County Boondocks Sherman's Lagoon Sally Forth and others. In the old category: L'il Abner Krazy Kat Asterix Tintin Buck Rogers and others, including the Yellow Kid. But because taste is so subjective, I don't think that anyone can say that "THIS is the best of the best!" |

He was originally named after "Sully's Bucket". Naturally, his slave name has changed over the years: Sull, Sullivan, Sullybucket, Pudgebucket, and of course, "Bucky". The last incarnation being found true to form after reading the comic. Every day is another laugh about our curious existance. |

The rest aren't worth noticing, in my opinion. It took a while for me to like Get Fuzzy, but it's grown on me. At least the artwork is good. (oh, yeah, I forgot, Rose is Rose, which I usually only read on Sundays, because the artwork is incredible). Steve |

Once you were "into the visual jokes" you noticed the little things from frame to frame...a glass of lemonade, becoming a soda-can, and then a beer-can, and then a high-ball or martini-with-olive...all in the same setting. Backgrounds, clothing, light-fixtures...all were part of the "Visual Irony."
Irony - dramatic, situational, verbal....but, visual? Perhaps, Garry Trudeau and even Crumb with ZAP created a new form.

You can look back through a few years of archives, and track the development of the great characters, many of which are cats. Seriously, it makes Bucky seem like a one-note joke, and other contemporary on-line strips seem juvenile. |
