I recently acquired a Ukrainian Tsymbal (often referred to as tsymbaly, but that's the plural). I'd like to learn to play some traditional Ukrainian songs on it. I've located one: Katushka, or Katyusha.   But I'd like to find a few more.   It would be wonderful if they would be in the Mudcat files....   but not necessary.   Thanks for your help.

In Ukrainian it's always reffered to in the plural, so tsymbaly.
Katyusha is NOT Ukrainian. Popular throughout the former Soviet Union, but it is Russian.
Anyway, here are some good Ukrainian songs.

Pidmanula, pidvela (tricked me, fooled me).
Vzyav By Ya Banduru.
Nich yaka misyachna.
Galyu (also known as Yikhali Kozaki iz Donu do Doma)
Ridna Maty Moya.

Though not a folksong, I think that Chervona Ruta would sound stunning on tsymbaly. It's a fantastic song and one that any Ukrainian could recognize at once.

You could always try to find some early work by The Ukranians, a British band.

I have a load of Ukranian material but no lyrics (couldn't read it if I did!).

Ah, yes, the Ukrainians!!! Their stuff is stunning, but I can't find lyrics anywhere.
If anyone needs to be convinced, they turned Venus in Furs into an optimistic, romantic song.

I seem to think I have an anthology somewhere with the lyrics. I'll have a look...

"Oj ti, divchino, z gorikha zernja"

I have this on an old tape; I believe the recording is of the A.V. Aleksandrov Ensemble. Words by Ivan Franko (1856-1916), put to music in the folk idiom by Anatolij Kos-Anatol'skij.

For the words, try here.
And this page has the music, as well.

You'll also find a slew of Ukrainian folk songs here. There are a number of sound files, so by sampling, you should be able to find some you like.
