Subject: UK Festivals next year? From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Oct 06 - 08:58 AM I shall be going to Sidmouth, and either Banbury or the Getaway next year, but I'm looking for a festival to fit between the Portaferry Gallimaufry in February, and Sidmouth in August. Must be somewhere with decent camping to suit my motorhome, so no muddy fields thanks! Giok |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Alio Date: 22 Oct 06 - 09:09 AM Saddleworth Folk festival is July 20th - 22nd, and has one of the best and mmost picturesque campsites. Motorhomes can park on the running track, and the campsite has Moor and Coast tent, a toilet and shower block, professional security day and night (and a river running by the side!!) Go to www.safra.org for more details Ali |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Cats Date: 22 Oct 06 - 09:41 AM You are very welcome at the Fox and Hounds Weekend on Dartmoor, over the w/end of 11, 12, 13 May. It's not a festival [never has been] more of a song and ale. We book the skittle alley and sing on Friday night, Saturday lunch and evening and Sunday lunchtime. Sunday morning there is a sing on the top of the tor at the back of the pub for those who fancy a walk and something a bit different. As for camping.., the pub has its own Caravan and Camping club certificated site which has hookups, plenty of room for caravans, camper vans and tents. Next year will be the 10th and the pub [which has an Irish landlord and landlady who have been there 35 years!] is going to make us a birthday cake! |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Oct 06 - 10:00 AM Looked at Miskin Dave, seems to be one with a lot of children in attendance, not my style I'm afraid. That was the one I had in mind to go to originally. Giok |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 22 Oct 06 - 10:15 AM Here's one good list Folk and Roots Festivals And here's another F(olk) Roots Festivals I usually find somewhere to park the bus even if it's not actually on the camp site. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Cats Date: 22 Oct 06 - 11:39 AM Even if you do not go to Festivals with kids there, Miskin is exceptional and you really ought to give it a try. The kids events are just as good as the adult events and not intrusive. Sadly, as we will be in Ireland, we won't be there next year but have already booked for 2008! |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Lenny’s mum Date: 22 Oct 06 - 11:50 AM Try Cleckheaton Folk Festival. 6, 7 and 8 July. Very good line up including Hissyfit, Vin Garbutt, Cherish the Ladies, Real Time and many others. Camping is on a big rugby pitch which is within walking distance to town or there is a free mini bus running all weekend. Moor and Coast are on the campsite too. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 Oct 06 - 11:57 AM I join in recommending Miskin, and my views on children are that they are best on toast with a little Worcester sauce. Oxford looks interesting - almost two festivals in one, part for the World Music sort of people and part for folkies, but it isn't clear how much fringe there is (which I prefer to concerts, mostly) and indeed Giok I am not clear whehter you are aiming most for participating or most for listening - which does affect things. Miskin is currently sans campervan site (tents down by the river, but no vehicles on that part) unless you are eligible for the disability area (only space for about 10 vans, maybe 20) which is within 10 yards of some venues and the shower block and 50 yards from the bar. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 22 Oct 06 - 12:41 PM Well Giok hopefully we might be having another Yorkshire Gathering in May. As to kids at Miskin, one of the reasons we love it so much is that we see very little of ours while we're there as they have enough to keep them well and truly occupied and out of adult way. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Mo the caller Date: 22 Oct 06 - 04:59 PM Chippenham has everything. Caravans on the park near the leisure centre (showers, swimming etc). Dance, song, sessions, workshops of all sorts, outdoor performances, concerts. A long weekend as its the late May bank hol. No time to fit everything in. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: greg stephens Date: 22 Oct 06 - 05:34 PM At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, glastonbury is the festival to end all festivals. All varieties of music(including folk) are there in profusion(plus theatre, comedy, you name it). If by any chance you have never been, I can strongly recommend it. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Crane Driver Date: 22 Oct 06 - 06:27 PM The Gower Folk Festival will be 2nd weekend in June - small, friendly, located within a restored watermill complex and heritage centre at Parkmill, excellent lineup, uses a regular camping/ caravan site at reduced rates for festival goers, with a bus provided between the camp and festival sites. Look here for details. Andrew & Carole |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 Oct 06 - 07:07 PM Greg - did you spot the bit in Giok's original post about "no muddy fields"? Giok - Chippenham, Wimborne, Alcester, Warwick all recommended, but can't guarantee hardstanding for caravans and campervans. There's some at Crediton. Kitty |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: gnomad Date: 22 Oct 06 - 07:13 PM Moor & Coast has its fans, you could be one of them. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Bonecruncher Date: 22 Oct 06 - 08:18 PM Chippenham, end of May Bank Holiday, has a good flat site for 'vans. Mud depends on the weather but VERY rarely a problem. Concerts, singarounds, dances, even an aqueleidh (celeidh in the swimming pool. Like a mini-Sidmouth, but don't tell the organisers I said that! Colyn. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 06 - 03:56 AM Can't believe that no one has mentioned Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival yet - I've been for the last 3 years and had a fantastic time - they keep getting bigger and better. I'll certainly be there. It's always in June, not sure of the dates but it is something like the 3rd weekend ( I think ). They have a celeidh, concerts, mini sessions, dances, games for the kids, good variety of food, music workshops and circus workshops and all at a very reasonable price. Can't remember the website address offhand - I bought my tickets online last year, but put Middlewich festival into google and it should bring it up. |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 23 Oct 06 - 03:37 PM The TMSA is not exactly zippy about updating their list - partly because they're understaffed, and partly because everything has go via their fuckwit graphic designers to be mangled into that gruesome leaflet design before they'll release it to the web. But you can count on almost all the festivals being at much the same time next year, and the contacts for each will be able to confirm if you've got exactly the right weekend. You mostly do singing? Glenfarg or Girvan might fit the bill early in that period (camping at Glenfarg will be better), Keith or Newcastleton later (both are quite big, with both singing and instrumental stuff). |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: The Barden of England Date: 24 Oct 06 - 03:27 AM I'd suggest the Ely Folk Festival :- http://www.elyfolk.co.uk/ . Lovely site - I've never seen it muddy, great atmosphere and always great artists, both well known and up and coming. John Barden |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: GUEST,chris Date: 24 Oct 06 - 04:17 AM there's nothing wrong with children at festivals it's the parents who just let their children run riot, especially on campsites. I will probably sound like a grumpy old man (probably am one)but I get annoyed by children (or suposedly responsible parents who let them)who think that it doesn't matter if their football/frisby hits the side of my £11000 caravan, and knocks pounds off its value. The belief that children 'need to express themselves' along with the legislation over the past few years seems to be interpreted as 'children can do what they like'.Interesting that we're running out of prison space and young offenders spaces rapidly. Is there a connection I wonder! chris I'm sure this will p*ss a lot of people off as I'm sure it cant be their children that i'm talking about! |

Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Oct 06 - 06:59 AM My caravan cost £250.... It has a shower, a loo, a gas fire, a stove, gas rings and grill, hot and cold running water, a fridge, 2 single (or 1 double) bed, a chest of drawers and a wardrobe for clothes, double glazing, 12V (240V if on hookup), no leaks, and I've ripped out the overhead cupboards to make shelves for instruments. What more could anyone want? Actually a larger loo and a spare tyre would be nice but mustn't be picky. It's also small and light to tow and manhandle. It looks like shit from the outside and a bit tatty on the inside so with luck no-one will burgle it. Sorted. |
|
Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: Scrump Date: 24 Oct 06 - 09:04 AM Hey, that gives me an idea - I'll buy a caravan and park it in front of my house to stop the kids' footballs hitting the windows :-D |
|
Subject: RE: UK Festivals next year? From: GUEST Date: 24 Oct 06 - 01:37 PM That reminds me of a story. I live opposite a Common, and for years there were problems with travellers/gipsies camping illegally on it. (The Council have barricaded it now, so no problem anymore). One occasion, there was a 'spare'caravan which the kids were using to play in. I later discovered that the modus operandi was to pinch a caravan off somebody's front drive for this purpose. After the travellers departed, this spare van was left behind totally wrecked by the little darlings, who had expressed themselves a treat! |
