On Sat. 28th October (as near as we can make it to Halloween) Craig Morgan Robson will be performing their show "Tales of Otherness" at
Boscastle Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets available on the door - £7.50 per person, £5 children and pensioners, or you can contact the Museum of Witchraft to book (I think!). The show was first commissioned by and performed at Cornwall Folk Festival, and is all about "Things that aren't what they seem to be" so you can expect songs and stories about shape-shifting, diguise, magic and deception of all kinds, plus of course lots of harmonies. Some of it is serious, some lighthearted - come and hear it for yourself...
Best wishes
Saro

No doubt they will sing this one?

A Lyke-Wake Dirge

THIS ae nighte, this ae nighte,
—Every nighte and alle,
Fire and fleet and candle-lighte,
And Christe receive thy saule.

When thou from hence away art past,
—Every nighte and alle,
To Whinny-muir thou com'st at last;
And Christe receive thy saule.

If ever thou gavest hosen and shoon,
—Every nighte and alle,
Sit thee down and put them on;
And Christe receive thy saule.

If hosen and shoon thou ne'er gav'st nane
—Every nighte and alle,
The whinnes sall prick thee to the bare bane;
And Christe receive thy saule.

From Whinny-muir when thou may'st pass,
—Every nighte and alle,
To Brig o' Dread thou com'st at last;
And Christe receive thy saule.

From Brig o' Dread when thou may'st pass,
—Every nighte and alle,
To Purgatory fire thou com'st at last;
And Christe receive thy saule.

If ever thou gavest meat or drink,
—Every nighte and alle,
The fire sall never make thee shrink;
And Christe receive thy saule.

If meat or drink thou ne'er gav'st nane,
—Every nighte and alle,
The fire will burn thee to the bare bane;
And Christe receive thy saule.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
—Every nighte and alle,
Fire and fleet and candle-lighte,
And Christe receive thy saule

Quite agree with Leadfingers. The rebuilt and revamped Museum is a must. There are also some very good pubs in the village, including the Wellie and the Cobweb where you can get something to eat and a decent pint or two. Why not make a day of it.. or even stay overnight in one of the local B&B's and experience the sea and the coastal path first thing in the morning.

The Napoleon, at the top of the hill, was always very good and used to have a singing session on a Friday night. I heard the splendid Charlie Jose there many times. There may still be a music session in the Wellington on a Monday night.

Craig Morgan Robson are terrific. They are doing a marvellous weekend for the Lewes Arms Folk Club on 10/11th. November next year: an all-day vocal harmony workshop on the Saturday, an evening performance at the club on the Saturday evening, and an all-day ballad forum on the Sunday. Email me off-list if you'd like details and a booking form nearer the time.

Tootle pip,

Valmai

Don't miss this one out!

THE DUNDEE GHOST
(Matt McGinn)

Now a deid men seldom walks they very seldom talk
It's no very often you see them runnin aroon
But I am a refugee frae a graveyard in Dundee
And I've come tae haunt Some hooses in Glesca toon

Noo the reason I arose was tae get masel some clothes
Fur it really gets hell o' a cold below the grun
But then I whispered tae ma sel' I think I might as well
Hang aroon fur a while and have some fun

A man put out his light on a cold and wintery night
I showed him one o' ma ees and a slapped his heid
He said "Oh" and I said "Boo" He said who the hell are you
A said don't be feart am only a man that's deid

Noo the fella knelt and prayed and this is what he said
Why in the name o' God have you picked on me
So I pulled away his rug and slapped him wan on the lug
The reason fur that I'll very soon let you see

When he brought the polis in I battered him wan on the chin
The polis turned aroon and he blamed ma frein
He marched him tae the jail, he'll be in there quite a while
But I'll see nabody taks his single end

The polis thought him daft and a lot o' people laughed
When the fella said a ghost wis in his hoose
But whit the fella said wis true and a might be visiting you
Fur don't forget that I'm still on the loose

If you can get to this event you will not regret it, I saw it at Wadebridge and it was fantastic, the 3 girlies all have fantastic voices and great personalities to go with it. I will have to try and get along myself!
Cheers, Lucy.

This sounds Wonderful, but I don't think I'll be able to get along though I'll be singing a few songs at Bampton 'After the Fair' that weekend which is somewhere near there. Have a Brill & Spooky time!

Just for fun, here's the only recipe I have found for soul cakes. When we have a Halloween evening at the Lewes Arms I make them for everyone to share. They are unusual for a yeast recipe in not including salt; could this be because ghosts are repelled by salt, but these cakes are intended for them to eat? Or did the original cook realise that most of them would already have heart conditions and ought to avoid the stuff?

Tootle pip,

Valmai (Lewes Arms Folk Club)

YEAST SOULE CAKES

'Three pounds flour, quarter pound butter (or half pound if the cakes are to be extra rich) half pound sugar, two spoonsful of yeast, two eggs, allspice to taste, and sufficient new milk to make it into a light paste. Put the mixture (without the sugar or spice) to rise before the fire for half an hour, then add the sugar, and allspice enough to flavour it well; make into rather flat buns, and bake.'

This is the recipe of Mrs. Mary Ward, who is known to be the last person who kept up the old custom of giving 'Soul Cakes' at Pulverbatch. She died in 1853 at the age of 101.

Shropshire Cookery Book, compiled by the Shropshire Federation of Women's Institutes, c. 1955

Do they mean 1853 for Mrs. Wards death, or 1953??

From the style in which the recipe is written, I think the earlier date is right. Possibly they checked it by ouija board...

Tootle pip,

Valmai

It wasn't on when we popped in on Saturday night. It might have been a guest beer. Never fear, we will keep popping in and let you know when it's back on. The things we have to do for folk music... visiting pubs... whatever next!!
