Subject: Folklore: Birmingham (Warwick) Songs From: Leadfingers Date: 01 Oct 06 - 08:38 AM Sorting through piles of words , I have two songs that are 'recent' that i would like info on ! One dates from the 1966 Mitchell and Butler draymen's strike - 'The M & B Downer' and has the chorus :- They're drinking pepsi cola lemonade and ice cream soda And granny's parsnip win went down a treat Our Chief Constable complained of an empty Steelhouse lane Not a drunk was found in all the city streets The other dates from a similar time , when there was discussion about ways the Council could generate income , and followed the idea of a Corporation Brothel , song title :- 'The Birmingham Brothel' If any Midlands Catters have any ideas about the writers of these two songs I would be very grateful ! |

Otherwise, it might have been a song performed at the Grey Cock FC on Sunday nights - regulars included Charles Parker. My old mate Steve Sutton used to sing there in the 1970s - I think he lives in Poole these days. It doesn't ring any bells as one performed by the Old Crown/Bl;ack Pig regulars. You could try Dave Hunt. |
