Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: frogprince Date: 28 Sep 06 - 08:31 PM I still hafta admit I enjoy a lot of his singing. A few years back when my oldest nephew was visiting on the family farm, he announced he wanted to go in the house to watch Green Hardy movies. What I don't remember, is how we actually got him translated, so we could tell that he was talking about old Autry westerns. Said nephew is now a Sargeant Major in Iraq, who will have his time in for full army retirement if he gets out of there alive. My very first favorite song was "Strawberry Roan", sung by Gene on the radio "from Melody Ranch". I've searched far and wide, and no full recording of it seems to be available. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: pdq Date: 28 Sep 06 - 08:59 PM There is a 3 CD box set called "The Gene Autry Show: The Complete 1950s Television Recordings". "Strawberry Roan" is there. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: frogprince Date: 28 Sep 06 - 09:56 PM Thanks, PDQ; I bought that set a few years ago, and there is a fragment, I think just about a verse and chorus, of "Strawberry Roan". Better than nothin, anyhow. Dean. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 28 Sep 06 - 10:04 PM What a treat it is to watch old Gene Autry movies. They were really musicals with just enough plot to get some shootin' and ridin' and roundin' up the bad guys to satisfy the youngun's. I have a lot of his pictures on VCR and DVD and there's not one that has fewer than seven songs, many composed by Gene's sidekick, Froggy, who, in addition to his songwriting abilities, was adept on many instruments. Roy Rogers movies featured better arranged songs, performed by Roy's old band, The Sons of the Pioneers. Their style was slick and sleek, not far from what was called Western Swing but Gene sandg more real cowboy songs than Roy did. They were, both, great. Mike |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: GUEST,Tiger Date: 28 Sep 06 - 10:30 PM I once ran into a fellow whose mother dated Gene. I sent him some lyrics, "The Gangster's Warning" (a song I learned from my father-in-law), amd he sent me a neat backyard bluebird whirlygig (which he made as a hobby). We still treasure it. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Sep 06 - 12:23 AM I remember well the movies and the TV shows and I'll tell ya' what.....I hated all that singing!!! Let's see some gunfights and fistfights and any other kind of fights....and more of Champion and Trigger......and more of Smiley and either Pat (Buttram or Brady) and just shitcan that stupid singing! Now I admit that my cowboy outfit of dual six guns, hat, scarf, vest, and boots also did include an official Gene Autry Radio Ranch guitar in real plastic. It was just an ornament though. I listened to my 45's of "Back in the Saddle Again" and Mexicali Rose" and "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" but I was really longing for the latest serial and TV episode on that monster 12 inch screen. Gotta' admit, back then I was a bigger Gene fan then Roy....but I really went for Johnny Mack Brown and The Cisco Kid......Hey Pon-co.....Hey Seeees-coe........... Spaw |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 29 Sep 06 - 10:05 AM Johnny Mack Brown? I, only, remember him from old movies on TV. I am, however, old enough to have seen Lash Larue and the Durango Kid on the big screen (Whip Wilson was a pale imitation). Cowboy movies were all B features back then. I didn't see Hoppy in the theater but I followed his adventures with his sidekick, Lucky, on the tube. Cowboy sidekicks are an interesting group. There was Al "Fuzzy" St. John (He had been one of the original Keystone Kops), the ventriliquist, Max Terhune (and his dummy, Elmer) and, of course, the ever popular George "Gabby" Hayes (Yer dern tootin'). Johnny Mack Brown, who had been an All-American football player, was often teamed with Buck Jones and Bob Steele. They were called The Three Mesquiteers. You may remember Bob Steele as the heartless killer, Canino, in "The Big Sleep" or from his continuing role in the TV western spoof, "F Troop" Mike. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Sep 06 - 10:29 AM Thanks Mike...I remember them all quite well. Bob Steele was very big in the serial movies of the 30's/40's which played on TV in the 50's. He often played a good guy in the serials and carried star billing on a few. He never really fit the hero sterotype but I liked him. Tim McCoy was another movie cowboy I liked. Never as big as Buck Jones but he had this shifting, squinting eyes thing that he did that had me hooked. I followed Hoppy of course but somehow he wasn't quite as big to me as Cisco or Gene or Roy although he carried the role and the public persona with him for years. The other big singing cowboys were Rex Allen and the real biggie, Tex Ritter. On the sidekick thing, I liked Pat Buttram and earliwer, Gene's other sidekick, Smiley Burnette (later on Petticoat Junction). Gabby Hayes was kind of the Gold Standard...LOL. Somewhere we have another thread or two on this and another on movie horses as well. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: SINSULL Date: 29 Sep 06 - 01:21 PM When I was a child my parents took me to a rodeo and Gene Autry was the emcee. I hated it but loved Gene. Hated cowboy movies in general. But loved Gene. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: Steve-o Date: 29 Sep 06 - 02:34 PM I loved Gene and Roy, and still do, and I agree with Mike's assessment of their styles and abilities. My feeling was always that Gene was a really dorky actor, but wonderful singer, and Roy was a much better actor. Anyway, the serials were all great, and they're still fun to watch today. And BTW, my favorite cowboy was Bob Steele- when he had a fight he punched about 30 times per second. I remember almost peeing in my pants when my fourth grade teacher told us that he lived next door to her, right here in Glendale, CA. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: GUEST,Jim Date: 29 Sep 06 - 04:55 PM I saw an old Gene Autry movie on TV last week and one of the bad guys was Roy Rogers. No foolin'! When my kids (now 30) were about three, I'd sit one on each knee and sing,"I'm a cowpoke poke, poke pokin' along," the old Gene Autry song, while bouncing them on my knees. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday From: frogprince Date: 29 Sep 06 - 08:31 PM "I didn't know he was still alive". Sorry, Beer; neither did Gene. "Gene Autry died at his home in Studio City, California, on October 2, 1998, due to complications from cancer. He was 91 years old. Gene is buried at Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills." |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday (29 Sep 1907-2 Oct 1998) From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 30 Sep 06 - 01:00 AM I have a copy of the Gene Autry movie where Roy Rogers plays an outlaw. It's called "The Old Corral" and Roy isn't really a bad guy. He and his brothers, played by The Sons of the Pioneers, hold up a stage to finance their singing career (If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'). They sing several songs and, of course, so does Gene. I saw a lot of old Tim McCoy films on TV. He had been a real colonel in the US Calvary. His son had a short career as a western star, too. I did like Rex Allen but I prefer the singing of Gene and Roy. As I have said, I don't remember Roy ever doing a traditional song but Gene did quite a few. I always think of Tex Ritter as part of the era of Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson, so far before me that their films weren't shown on late night TV. sic transit gloria Mike |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday (29 Sep 1907-2 Oct 1998) From: GUEST,Jim Date: 30 Sep 06 - 12:00 PM That's the movie, Mike. You're right, he wasn't really an unlikeable bad guy, but I think there was actually a fist fight between Gene and Roy. My favourite cowboy star was Hoppy, but he didn't sing in the movies. He had a sidekick named Lucky who did the crooning. |

Subject: RE: Gene Autry's Birthday (29 Sep 1907-2 Oct 1998) From: GUEST,Mike Miller Date: 30 Sep 06 - 03:20 PM re "The Old Corral", yes, Gene and Roy had a fist fight while Gene was rounding up Roy and his "brothers". Roy even got in a punch or two before the inevitable conclusion. Hoppy (That's Hopalong Cassidy, as portrayed by silent screen star, William Boyd) did not sing and, to tell you the truth, I don't remember Lucky (played by Russel somebody) singing, either. Hoppy had those pearl handled six-guns and that silver kerchief clasp with the longhorn symbol. He was the only elderly cowboy hero, sort of a two-fisted Miss Marple. Unlike Gene and Roy, Hoppy didn't make new episodes for his TV show. He just reran his old movies and sold everything from Hoppy games to Hoppy lunchboxes. For really good music, you might want to check out Roy's "Bells of St. Angelo's" and "My Pal, Trigger". "King of the Cowboys" features a wonderful version of "I'm an Old Cowhand From the Rio Grand".
