Shirley Collins will be giving her illustrated talk "America Over the Water", about her travels with Alan Lomax collecting songs in the USA in the 1950's, at Cranleigh Arts Centre (7.30 pm) on Sunday 24th September 2006. Tickets are £9 in advance, or £10 on the day, and are obtainable from the Arts Centre box office on 08456 128128.

If you have not seen this talk before I can strongly recommend it! Shirley's reminiscences are both informative and entertaining (as are Pip Barnes' readings), and the musical illustrations are absolutely stunning For further information see http://www.electricvoices.org.uk

I saw Shirley in Halifax on Thursday, it's a wonderful presentation and Shirley is one of the most delightful ladies I have ever met, 71 years old and still beautiful.
Go and see her, you won't regret it.

eric

Fantastic show, I recommend to all. As always, what shines out with Shirley is her gentle humanity. Excellent.

Ali, I reckon you're in for a treat. I totally agree with what eric the red and Ian have said. I have seen the show in various formats about 4 or 5 times now, and can quite truthfully say that it's still as interesting as it was the first time I saw it - mostly due to Shirley herself ,and the cracking sound clips that she uses. (Oh and by the way, you really should buy the book as well - grins immensely. I believe that the tour actually heralds the fact that it's now coming out in paperback).

Just a thought.... if you're in the vicinity of Guildford, Surrey on Weds, October 20th, Shirley will be giving one of her other illustrated talks "A Most Sunshiny Day" at the Music Institute Club (location, Guildford Institute, Ward Street, off North Street, Guildford) as part of the club's series of evenings. There are currently only 19 tickets for this remaining (members £7.50, non-members £9).They can be bought on line, or by reservation on-line or by phone, followed up by submission of a cheque.

For further information, please consult the club's website at http://www.themusicinstitute.org.uk

Returned from seeing the new and improved version of Shirley's "America Over the Water" presentation a couple of hours ago, and I'm happy to report that it was better than ever. If you get the chance, you really should go and hear/see it!
Oh, and BTW, re my message about the Guildford presentation of "A Most Sunshiny Day" above, there are now only 13 tickets available. If you're interested, I'd advise moving fast :-)

Irene
