Subject: banjo necks From: dick greenhaus Date: 15 Sep 06 - 11:52 AM Back about thirty or forty years ago, aspiring 5-string banjo players were removing necks from tenor banjos and replacing them with 5-string necks. With the relatively recent rebirth of the tenor banjo, I'm told that there are folk removing necks from 5-stringers and replacing them with tenor necks. If anyone has done this latter, and has a 5-string neck lying about unused, I'd love to get it (or get more than one, if possible.) Please PM me. |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: BanjoRay Date: 15 Sep 06 - 12:32 PM I think at least as many banjos are still going from tenor to 5 string as 40 years ago. I know of many people with tenor to five conversion banjos. Ray |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: dick greenhaus Date: 15 Sep 06 - 08:25 PM Well, there's a bunch of English/Irish tenor banko pickers who'd be interested in discarded tenor necks, and some 5-stringers who'd find a home for left-over five-string necks. Could we set up an exchange? |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: chazkratz Date: 15 Sep 06 - 10:36 PM I have one of each, a Slingerland MayBelle tenor neck and an S. S. Stewart Universal Favorite 5-string neck (I replaced this with a Wyatt Fawley neck) and the Slingerland with a 5-string neck made for me by Jim Hyatt. The Maybelle is pretty basic, but the Stewart is nice--my Stewart pot is a U.F. #1 but the neck probably a U.F. 2 or 3. Both are, of course, dowel stick construction. Charles |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: Geoff the Duck Date: 18 Sep 06 - 07:53 PM Nearest I did was to make a new shorter neck for an ol dtenor banjo. ( as long as you don't count the complete 5-string banjo I made and the Mandola-bodied 5-string "Bandola" I constructed... Quack! GtD. By the way the tenor neck was too bowed to be worth saving. GtD. |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: chazkratz Date: 12 Dec 06 - 11:19 PM Dick and Mick, I just got back to this thread today. I hadn't seen your posts expressing your interest in the necks. I do still have them, if you're still interested. Charles |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: GUEST,Ray Date: 13 Dec 06 - 01:20 PM Dissatisfaction with necks seems to be a bit of a thing with banjo players - I remember the days (just) when they were grafting on extensions to make five strings into long necks - something to do with Pete Seeger, I recall. |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: DonMeixner Date: 13 Dec 06 - 01:23 PM Hi Ray, I'm going the otherway. My longneck 5 is just too cumbersome in most saloon type situations. Don |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: HiHo_Silver Date: 13 Dec 06 - 01:29 PM Occasionally there are Banjo necks for sale on EBay. I have also carved Banjo necks but no longer have the equipment to do so. If you are adept at woodworking you can carve one yourself. Found Maple or Walnut to be some of the best woods for this. |

Subject: RE: banjo necks From: reggie miles Date: 13 Dec 06 - 09:42 PM I would love to locate some unwanted guitar, banjo (5 or 4 string varieties) mando, uke or fiddle necks. I'm not too picky about the condition. I'd rather not have to spend the time to hack away at crafting my own. I like the Frankenstein approach. |

I also have a couple of unfinished long necks which I started as a project some time ago which are available. One has a truss rod fitted but both require a lot of sanding and shaping. Location is Hampshire UK |
