Try to think about the Roman Parade of Triumph.

The triumphator, his face and arms painted red, rode on an already ancient four wheeled car pulled by two white horses. A slave behind the triumphator held a laurel crown over his head (not touching it). Notably, this slave had to repeat continuously "Memento mori." ("Remember thou art mortal.") Some sources state that the slave would say; "Respica Te, Hominum Te Memento" ("Look behind you, you are only a man.")

or he might be saying, you know in a mini skirt and with a plumed helmet - I find you strangely attractive......you and me we could make triumphal entrances all night.

When my daughter was little, her uncle told me that he thought I was instilling too much self-confidence in her, that in consequence, she thought she could do anythng.

I told him that the occasional blow that reality would give her was preferable, in my opinion, to trying to boost her confidence in herself if she had started out fearing and distrusting her own judgment.

I concur, Ebbie. Arrogance, though, is confidence exagerrated and misplaced or misused. There are lots of effective ways to communicate without appearing overweening, overwhelming, self-centered, boorish, excessively judgemental, vengeful, uncaring, callous, or indifferent tot he views of others. And learning the fine art of effective communication requires walking away from the conceit of an arrogant center and being willing to exchange viewpoints honestly. I think sometimes arrogance is born from a fear of doing this, perhaps because one couldn't stand the idea of being made wrong, or misunderstood. But ayone can outgrow those juvenile fears with a little work.

All you people who think you are so clever and know everything are really quite bothersome to those of us who actually are and do.

(My great modesty prevents me from mentioning my many other virtues.)

In the USA people tend to equate arrogance with ability, so don't worry about it.

In my neck of the USA, arrogance does not equate with ability but rather an obnoxious fatheadedness of sorts.

Like I said, Clinton, whenever death decides to call, it's okay with me, but I don't figure it's up to me or any other person to decide when. In the meantime the usual stuff we're all familiar with goes round and round the mulberry bush here...like the chitchat on this forum. It's not really that big a deal. If you like it here, great. Enjoy it. Most people have days when they like it and days when they don't and other days when they're not exactly sure where they stand on the matter, so they mostly keep busy or distracted so as not to come face to face with the fear. There's one good reason right there to log in here and chat and argue with people you'll never meet and play little mindgames, eh? It shuts down the fear for awhile. Bullying people and telling them to "get a life" can make you feel safer too...cos you feel stronger in comparison to their (perceived) weakness, as you see it. And that's where the arrogance comes in. It's protective armour for someone who feels weak in some respect, but he can't admit it to himself or anyone else, because...oh, my god they might see him as vulnerable! Can't allow that, can we?

For the same reason (plus making a lot of money) the USA spends half the world's yearly armamaments expenditures proving how mighty it is and "protecting" itself from poverty-stricken people in distant places.

Like the British before them. Like the Nazis. Like Tojo's Japanese. Like the Soviets.

Arrogant.

The best cure for such arrogance is a total, absolute, undeniable defeat. May it fall on all such arrogant fools.

Napoleon - you wish to cure your arrogance?

Come to East Ham and I'll show you where the Greenjackets still recruit (You might know them better as the Riflemen or the mythical South Essex Regiment!)

Failing that, go see my sister in law who is now resident on your island, and she'll show you the error of your ways. Then just lick the wallpaper.
