Subject: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Scrump Date: 06 Sep 06 - 10:10 AM I intend to visit S/W Wales before too long (I say S/W because I'm not quite sure exactly where I'll be on any given day yet, but probably around Carmarthen would be a good guess, although further west is a possibility too (Pembs or Ceredigion, etc.)). Are there any regular folk clubs or sessions in the area? Or any websites sone kind person could point me at, with details of such things? Any help appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: sian, west wales Date: 06 Sep 06 - 10:21 AM Gwyl Pibau Pencader must be looming on the horizon - it's usually the 2nd or 3rd weekend in September. Good concerts and very good sessions. The sessions I know of are rather ... haphazard? You can't say for sure that they'll be where they are when you think they're going to be. At least, around Carmarthen. Fishguard Folk Club is the most regular west of here I think. sian |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Gervase Date: 06 Sep 06 - 10:27 AM There's a regular session on Tuesdays at the Royal Oak in Fishguard - music, song, (mainly English), and a very friendly atmosphere. The landlord's not a bad singer himself. Otherwise the Cellar Bar in Cardigan does the odd folk night and open mic evening, usually on Thursdays. I've been myself, but have heard mixed reports. Also on Tuesdays there's the Gwerin Aber session at the Cooper's Arms, Aberystwyth, but again, I haven't been there. Details on 01970 624050 Avoid the Cardigan Bay Folk Club at all costs - unless, that is, you like listening to amplified blue-grass from the organisers for two hours at a stretch! On the first Saturday in the month there's a session at the Black Lion Hotel, Mill Street, Pontrhydfendigaid, Ceredigion. Details on 01974 831624. A general listing of folk events in Wales, with links, can be found here. Hope this helps! |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Scrump Date: 07 Sep 06 - 04:27 AM Thanks for the info so far - it will probably be October when I visit, so plenty of time if anyone has details of events, etc. |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Crane Driver Date: 07 Sep 06 - 10:11 AM The Halfpenny Folk Club meets every Sunday at the Greyhound Inn, Oldwalls, Llanrhidian, North Gower. (Just south of Llanelli, if you've got a boat!) Guest night once a month, singers' nights elsewhen. You're very welcome. Andrew |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Scrump Date: 08 Sep 06 - 04:14 AM Hi Charley That would be good, but I don't think I'll be going to Wales now until later in October (it may be the week after, at the latest guess - I'm trying to juggle various things at present, work, visits to people, etc., before I can fix the date). I'd love to go there as it sounds a great club, but I think the Greyhound is a bit out of the way for me this time - I'm sure you'll have a great time there. Andrew - thanks for the info, if at all possible I'd like to come along but I doubt it this time as I'll be further west (will be calling at Swansea at some stage, probably the nearest I'll get to the Gower this time). Thanks for all the other info - I hope to get to at least one of them! |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Scrump Date: 12 Oct 06 - 10:26 AM Looks like I'll be going next week now - any updates on what might be happening folk-wise in the general area? Probably around Carmarthen, but prepared to travel further afield if it's worthwhile. Preferably mid-week sessions/events, as I'm not likely to be able to make the weekend ones (gigs/other commitments prevent it). "Refresh" - do I need to say that or does it happen anyway? Thought it might be like "Open Sesame" ;-) |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: Scrump Date: 12 Oct 06 - 10:44 AM Oops, just want to clarify that "worthwhile" doesn't mean any kind of money or anything - I simply meant if it's a good session or whatever, or even if there are any clubs with guest nights I'd be interested in going along to watch. |

Subject: RE: Folk clubs/sessions in S/W Wales? From: sian, west wales Date: 12 Oct 06 - 10:54 AM There's this one, which is part of our Songs of Pembrokeshire project: Please come to a free music workshop and session at the Rugby Club, Crymych with fiddle players Dan Morris and Caradog Williams next Monday evening, 16th October, from 5.45 until it finishes. This is an opportunity to learn some new tunes and songs and re-interpret some more familiar ones! *************** There has been a group getting together on Tues nights at one of the two pubs in Llanarthne, but I can't remember which one and can't think who to ask. And this was pre-PELs. There should be one in the pub in Llansaint on the 20th and that's probably the same night as the one t'other side of Haverfordwest (www.thevicsession.info/) There's one in Llangyndeyrn but that a Welsh language singing group. sian |
