Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: cptsnapper Date: 08 Aug 06 - 01:37 PM Yes, something went seriously wrong with my brain keyboard interface! When it left me I thought that it was as follows. Does anyone by any chance have a recording of Alex's Version of Bilbo's Last song, only by suggesting that some of his music may be re-issued I've sparked some interest in it. Thanks |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: Sorcha Date: 08 Aug 06 - 02:23 PM This isn't, Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins....is it? Lenoard Nimoy did that one and I have a cassette of it, I think.... |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: Lanfranc Date: 08 Aug 06 - 09:38 PM I have one performance by Alex (at Saffron Walden FC some time in the 80s) on tape - but it's reel to reel and I don't have the hardware at present. Plus like everything archival it is packed pending moving on Friday. Can't remember whether "Bilbo's Last Song" was on it, but at least I can find the tape when I've moved and need to find a tape deck anyway (look out, eBay!). Watch this space. Also can't remember, was it Alex's tune or the one Donald Swann wrote? If the latter, I have the dots. Alan |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: Sorcha Date: 09 Aug 06 - 09:13 AM OK, so you only want the Alelx version, not the Nimoy I have? |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: cptsnapper Date: 09 Aug 06 - 12:56 PM I don't know what Limewire or BitTorrent are & it is Alex's version that I'm after. I'm not aware that he made a commercial recording of it. |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: Clinton Hammond Date: 09 Aug 06 - 12:58 PM "I'm not aware that he made a commercial recording of it." Then how likely is it that anyone here is going to have a recording of it? |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Aug 06 - 12:02 AM This might not be the version you want, but... According to Donald Swann's web page BILBO'S LAST SONG is a poem by J. R. R. Tolkien set to music by Donald Swann. Donald Swann was a member of the famous duo Flanders & Swann. It appears on Donald Swann's cassette "Alphabetaphon 1" (1989); in the music book "The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycle" (second edition, 1992); on the album "Amiscellany: Music Making with Old Friends " (Nimbus #5342, 1992), with vocals by John Amis & Donald Swann, piano by Donald Swann. |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: cptsnapper Date: 24 Aug 06 - 11:30 AM Yes, but in this instance Alex wrote his own tune. |

Subject: RE: Alex Atterson ' Bilbo's Last Song' From: GUEST,Tony Maso (16 Feb 2015) Date: 21 Feb 15 - 06:12 PM Alex set the poem to music. The tolkien family would not give him permissioin to record it. He always asked, that tape recorders should be turned off when he sang it. Of course there are a few recordings about, on tape, and from my point of view much better than the Donald Swann version. |
