Remember a while back I mentioned I had a load of empty jars hanging around the house?

Not so many now... I had a funny five minutes and purchased some 'end of day reduction' fruits. Today I had a busy day in the kitchen and am the proud creator and probably sole consumer of 10 shiny jars of jam, 6 apricot and 4 raspberry.

Anyone else been jamming? Or pickling??

Not sure why Liz but I have a picture of you (even though I don't know what you look like) playing a tune on a row of jars filled with differing levels of jam.....Personal jamming session eh?
Best wishes, MIke.

No jam here yet. This weekend:

Got a few pounds of strawberries from one of the "pick your own" farms. Had some for tea yesterday, some more early afternoon and Pip's pureed a load - think that's that lot accounted for.

Picked about 12lbs of blackurrants from the garden. That's in the process of being turned into "Ribena".

What gooseberries we had went into a crumble for today's tea.

The red currants are destined for a jelly.

Ah mango chutney... I've got 4 big blue containers saying that outside - bought them on ebay and am using them as water butts.

Seriously, I'm not sure what chutney(s) Pip will end up making this year but I've no doubt she will make something.

I'm not sure she will be making as much of jams, chutney, etc. this year as I think there is a fair amount of stuff left from last year. One I do know is on the cards for later is crab apple jelly. We've found one spot where trees grow along a country lane and nobody seems to want to bother with them...

Done my strawberry and am thinking about where I can get some blackcurrents. We've got a few PYOs, but nothing quite on the doorstep. We had a farmers' market last week but strawbs were the only jammy-fruits on offer.

I was weeding in the back jungle a couple of weekends ago and decided that the brambles either had to be wrestled with, or left til after they fruit. Decided on the latter.

Anyone got a recipe for pates des fruits or turkish delight? I tried a a couple of recipes last year, using blackberry juice and was very disappointed. I had some superb fruit jellies (of the confectionary kind) from Washington once and I figure there must be a way to make them at home ...

Elderberry Jelly - now that's what I call jam in.

But where to buy? I used to make it.

homemade gin?

How do you make vodka jam?

jelled alcohol, that would be something but I bet its impossible to make. I once got high on whiskey balls though.

well, the 'volunteer' raspberries are nearly ripe in our yard. Not enough for jam, but we have some wonderful bits of ice cream with fresh raspberries for a week or so.

(I used to live in an old house that had blackberry bushes all over the back yard...enough to make pies & turnovers and freeze a few )

I made strawberry jam about 3 weeks ago and we opened the first jar of it this weekend...YUMMY! Pickles won't be put up until they cukes are ready to be picked. I did find a nice recipe for watermelon rind pickles that I'd like to try sometime soon!

And Mr. Red,

I have an over abundance of elderberries coming this year. The berries are just now starting to form as the flowering part is dying off. I'll be making elderberry jam sometime next month. My husband loves it, personally I don't care for it much. Check your local farmer's market in mid to late August for Elderberry Jam.

We've not done well with elderberries over the past couple of years. The fruit has sort of dried out by the time they ripen.

Raspberries haven't done well this year but I think we need new canes. I'm sure well pay another visit to a PYI to get some. We are lucky round here (N Norfolk UK) there are a couple within a 10 mintue drive.

We should have a good supply of blackberries later. They and sloes grow in the hedge along the field behind the house.

Strawberries are almost over, made two batches. The market's full of raspberries, and I put up a triple batch of raspberry liqueur that should be ready to wrack off and bottle by Christmas. I won't have time this year for blueberries, as we will be away from home all through August, but Edmund came home from New Brunswick with canned seville oranges ... enough to keep both families in marmalade for years. Peaches in September -- perhaps jam, perhaps chutney. October is time for apple butter.

I hear tell that some people spend their summer weekends lolling around reading the papers. Is that really true?

Never cared much for elderberry jam, always think it tastes like rain.Picked the new pollen-laden elder-flower heads and added them (in muslin) to gooseberry jam - absolutely exquisite !!!
So gorgeous in fact that between the 2 of us we've polished off the lot.Roll on next year !

LilyFestre

Make the jelly if you want to make your hubby ecstatic. It does require the right amount of pectalitic enzyme - like a bottle of Certo.

If Joy is making jam this year I might persaude her - their farm has a bit of everything wild. She declines to make mulberry jam - she eats them off the tree.

too bad the fruits need
heating when the weather
is too warm to light a stove

peaches are ripe around here...

but out of laziness i freeze
more than can these days..

more than can what?

We used to freeze the elderberries - not to do later - but because it was easier to get them off the stalk with a fork and less juice was lost.

I guess Elderberry conserves are the Marmite of the fruit work - you either love them or hate ..............

The act of removing elderberries from their stalks with the use of a fork is called 'strigging' i.e removing the fruit from the the stalks, or striggs.

Freezing things like plums, sloes and elderberries is good, it releases some of the enzimes and improves the flavour.

Various lots of fruit ice cream keep being made. Some have lasted as long as two weeks. Lots of elderflower cordial bottled, and I do mean bottled. Got a crown capper a while back, and all you need then are lots of empty beer bottles. What a shame...

All our strawberries got attacked by some type of creature that pulls the fruit off and eats all the seeds from the outside of the strawberry and then rejects it. I am not in favour of inflicting death on things but if it does it again, I may be inclined to rethink. Plums are not ready yet neither are the apples and pears, but if anyone can think of anything interesting to do with a courgette???

There are lots of interesting things to do with a courgette but they will only get you a) talked about or b) arrested.

I like mine stir fried in garlic butter with a touch of stem ginger. In the restaurant I worked in, we would get the bigger ones, scoop out the seeds, drizzle with olive oil and bake them. Then we'd fill the hole with garlic mushrooms.

Fry in a mixture of olive oil and butter, along with some onions [preferably red] a couple of cloves of garlic, then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, along with a tespoonful of chopped Thyme, and/or Oregano. Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, and you have a sort of Ratatouille.

"a sort of Ratatouille."

That's the way courgettes usually get cooked here.
