Subject: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:25 PM I keep seeing references to "Indie Lables" or "Indie Music". OK, so what does this refere. Is this a stupid question or, like my kids say, am I just "so out of touch". Maybe I'm narrow minded & listen to only folk & mostly traditional at that? Thanks all Barry |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:28 PM I always took it to mean "independent," Barry, as in solo, no record company/publisher/etc. involved.:-) |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: pdq Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:34 PM The term 'independent label' used to mean companies like Rounder, Flying Fish, Old Homestead, etc. The opposite was 'major label' as in Columbia, Capital, Mercury, Decca, etc. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Sorcha Date: 16 Jul 06 - 12:41 AM Also means Indiana (US state) as in Indy/Indie 500, flat track top fueler 500 mile race. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Nerd Date: 16 Jul 06 - 12:57 AM It means independent. However, how one judges which label is independent varies. NME, for example, recognizes four companies as "Major:" Warner, Sony BMG, EMI and Universal. All other labels are independent. Others draw the line further down the food chain. Wikipedia has a good article on this here. |

Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Richard Bridge Date: 16 Jul 06 - 09:04 AM Of sound or style, "Indie" means sounds like Oasis (and since all Oasis sounds the same that kind of focusses the concept). It distinguishes from (not a complete list, and I could not necessarily distinguish of define many of them) Metal Nu-metal Death Metal Speed Metal Norse Metal Grunge EMO Screamo God Rock Heavy Rock Pomp Rock Soft Rock Pop Britpop (although Indie is relatively close to this) Power pop Punk Old School About 99 different types of dance and trance which all sound very similar to me About 99 other different types of Mobo which all sound very similar to me About 99 different types of Latino which all sound very similar to me Folk Country C+W AOR MOR Indie usually has that characteristic annoying nasal whine of Oasis, enough distortion on (usually two) guitars to conceal (usually) limited technique, probably single drum pedal, and kick and bass not overpowering in the mix (and probably very limited FX on bass). "Exactly" is as hard to tie down here as it is in other musical issues. |

Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Matt_R Date: 16 Jul 06 - 02:00 PM Indie sounds nothing like Oasis, and is mostly based on a more garage rock sound, not the anthemic "big" Oasis sound. However, within the "Indie" genre, there are many differing sounds, from Sufjan Stevens' folky singer-songwriter style to dance-rock & '80s-inspired The Bravery. Belle & Sebastian is also a leading indie band, and they sound nothing like Oasis nor have a "whine". |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Tootler Date: 16 Jul 06 - 02:19 PM This term appeared at about the time my kids were in their mid teens. My understanding was that there were a number of small record companies set up and they recorded bands whose sound and style were different from that the big record labels were used to and did not think would sell. Of course the small labels proved them wrong - the bands did sell and produced a sound that became "Indie" as an shortening of "Independant Label". As to the characteristics of the sound I was never really clear. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Jul 06 - 02:28 PM I thought it also meant independent in the sense that they don't do covers, but write and arrange their own stuff: this applies to my son's band, who describe themselves as being an Indie band. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Genie Date: 17 Jul 06 - 03:31 AM "Indies" are also those paid go-betweens that encourage radio stations to play songs that a record company pays them to promote. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Tootler Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:28 PM I suspect it is one of those terms, like many in pop music, whose original meaning shifted fairly quickly. Certainly there used to be quite a lot of reference to "Indie Labels" |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: Snuffy Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:40 PM "Indie" is like "acoustic" or "folk" - can mean anything at all, depends what they are trying to sell you. |
Subject: RE: What exactly does 'Indie' mean? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:53 PM 30ish years ago Indie = Independance of traditional corporate means of production and marketing and distribution.. that means any record lables.. big or small the idealist punk DIY ethic of taking control of means of production.. ie.. beg, borrow, steal the ££$$ to finance yer own records and gigs and fanzines.. to form loacl music 'co-ops' to encourage kids to create their own music and culture.. in time.. a few of these one off record releases grew into now well known 'indie' lables owned by a new generation of middle aged entreprneurs.. ..actually a lot of it was not much different in principle to 1960'/ 70s private financed 'vanity press' folk LPs and EPs.. |
