Subject: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: GUEST,Archers addict Date: 13 Jul 06 - 06:47 PM I know Ambridge doesn't always have the same weather as the rest of us - sometimes they have pouring rain when the rest of us are having a drought. But surely the moon should be the same, or they'd have to have Easter on a different weekend. But a couple of nights ago, when the rest of us had a full moon, Daniel and Alistair had a clear view of the stars, the Plough [Big Dipper, for you folks across the way] and Milky Way, and didn't mention the moon at all. How come? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Rapparee Date: 13 Jul 06 - 06:52 PM What does this have to do with archery (which I assume from your handle you love)? Are you going to shoot the moon? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: michaelr Date: 14 Jul 06 - 01:16 AM Because Daniel and Alistair were busy. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 14 Jul 06 - 01:59 AM At least they agreed that Orion was not visible. Are we not more concerned about the missing Ed than the missing moon? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Sooz Date: 14 Jul 06 - 02:33 AM I read that as Onion. Must get new glasses. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John O'L Date: 14 Jul 06 - 02:43 AM Now, as eve done its deep approachey, his eye on the Moon, all-time some-time deep joy of a full moon scintillatin' dangley in the heavenly 'bode, but now only half - "Oh, blow your cool, man!" he did this deep thought-cus. "What is the folly of this half-disappearing of the moonly-most?" And as the light did a scintillating change through timely-most, stoppit still, and he did a deep thought-cus, what? Absolutely smashed and flakit he was. So, gathering all behind in the hintermost, he ploddy-ploddy forward into the deep thunder-mould of the complicating forrie to sort this one out matey. "Where at man, he thought-cus, where at man? Oh, dear!" |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John O'L Date: 14 Jul 06 - 02:46 AM Nearly forgot. That belongs to Stanley Holloway from 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake' by The Small Faces. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John O'L Date: 14 Jul 06 - 03:27 AM More apologies. Opinion on the internet seems to be pretty well unanimous that it was Stanley Unwin's work. My mistake. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Jul 06 - 05:00 AM I woke up in the middle of the night, and looked out my window, through the dirt and grime of one of the few panes of glass that hadn't been replaced by cardboard or plastic sheeting. I looked up at the stars all gleaming twinkling and shining back the reflected light of a million suns, and I thought 'What is it all about?' Then I thought, 'It's got bugger all to do with me anyway' so I rolled over and went back to sleep! Giok As for the Archers, they are on an econonomy drive in the studios, and the moon was turned off that night to save electricity! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: greg stephens Date: 14 Jul 06 - 06:25 AM I was surprised that Daniel had not discovered the comic potential of the planet Uranus. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Bunnahabhain Date: 14 Jul 06 - 05:02 PM No Shula, my Aunts daft Dalmatian. A brief and sometimes accurate guide to the Archers for the perplexed who can't figure out what google is for... The Archers is the longest running seriel in the world, since when radios were steam powered and had to be shared between the whole village. It is set in a ficional rural county, Borstetshire, and was orginally intented to provide infomation for famers. This aspect now provides unintentional comedy. The main reason to listen is the intersting accents, and ludicrous plot lines. It also tackles issues that really affect normal country folk, such as the gay couple spilt on if to have a child... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Rapparee Date: 14 Jul 06 - 05:15 PM Oh. Like The Adventures of Helen Trent. I thought it was about archery or Agincourt or something. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Tootler Date: 15 Jul 06 - 10:09 AM One of the characters in the Archers, Tom Forrest, used to sing traditional songs in the village pub. Can you see a character in a modern soap doing that? Times change. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John J Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:24 AM Tom Forrest was a singer in his own right. As for the moon, I reckon they were just looking t'other way. John |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: danensis Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:28 AM Didn't they ahve a barn dance and use a real live Ceilidh band? I seem to think the sunday omnibus uses a recording of this for the intro. John |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John MacKenzie Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:33 AM Bob Arnold aka Tom Forrest, well known singer of 'The Village Pump', and an Archers favourite. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Ron Davies Date: 15 Jul 06 - 11:34 AM Is that ambridge waves of grain? For purple mountains' majesty across the--sorry, wrong country. Well, close. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Herga Kitty Date: 15 Jul 06 - 02:34 PM Apart from Bob Arnold, folkies have occasionally written for the Archers. Anyone remember Nelson Gabriel's trip to the Lakes with Caroline and post-hunt pub session? The location of Ambridge is sort of virtual Cotswolds (ie within commuting distance of Birmingham). In recent weeks we've had morris dancers at the Bull, and during the last week we've had the local schoolchildren being taught maypole dancing..... Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: danensis Date: 16 Jul 06 - 01:44 PM "Village children in pagan fertility ritual" - I can see the headlines now. John |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 16 Jul 06 - 06:37 PM When I was walking on the Malvern Hills, someone wearing an 'Archers addict' sweatshirt pointed to a nearby hill, somewhere in the region of Upton-on-Severn, and assured me that it was Lakey Hill, so it's northern Cotswolds. This should make it all much clearer |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Ebbie Date: 16 Jul 06 - 10:23 PM I'm told that fractious is usually noisier than frictious. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: MBSLynne Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:20 AM The moon is not visible, however full it is, at all hours of the night. It may have set by the time they were looking at the sky. Didn't Ripley Wayfarers record the Archers signature tune for the Sunday omnibus years ago? And isn't it time somebody shot Adam Macey? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:59 AM On the 11th it rose about 10.15 and set about 4.20. Not much hope of seeing the Milky Way I think. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Mr Red Date: 17 Jul 06 - 08:02 AM Pete Shutler was and probably still is in the Archers and it is his accordian playing for the Sunday omnibus edition. What the band was called I have no idea but he told me in about 1994 when they had the Yetties at the Swan Theatre Worcester. FWIW Eddie Grundy's actor lives in the area of Upton-u-7 and has been known to play his music locally - purely for amusement. Mark Wooley - who had a music shop in Upton - knows him well and gigs with as a duo with another local singer. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Paul from Hull Date: 17 Jul 06 - 07:43 PM Ah yes, I had the habit some ears ago but stopped because that ruddy SNELL woman used to get on my wick so much. Granted, thats what she was FOR (I mean not that they had her there to annoy me particularly, of course, Auntie Beeb would be unlikely to go to so much trouble...) but I found her just too much. I suppose it could be said that it reflects real life in that, but t'Archers has never been accused of reflecting real life.... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 17 Jul 06 - 08:59 PM Paul from Hull, I used to have the same problem some years back with "Aunt Laura". I stopped listening for about seven years, but when I started again I picked up the story with no problems, as if I'd only stopped for about a week, except that Jennifer had a different husband. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Jul 06 - 06:33 AM We stopped too for a while, after John died because Pat's depression was ...well...depressing. I nearly gave up when the horrible Hazel was living in Ambridge for a while (Not the last time...that was lovely because Lillian really gave her what she deserved.) Various people have irritated me over the years, but somehow, one keeps coming back and it's like travelling then returning home. The family is all mostly the same as ever. The Will/Emma/Ed story was so completely riveting that I could hardly wait for 7.02 each evening. A soap that has been running for 55 years has to have had it's ups and downs and good and bad characters in all senses of the words. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Mr Red Date: 18 Jul 06 - 12:35 PM I have to say I never listened - but I was too lazy to get up and switch it off after ISIHAC because I would be happytapping like now. But with timeshifting getting so easy - I can choose my radio - and do. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Paul from Hull Date: 19 Jul 06 - 12:01 AM I'll have to give it a try again....paticulrly as I'm without a telly atm. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: Rusty Dobro Date: 19 Jul 06 - 02:13 PM I'm still desolate over the tragedy of Grace Archer, also the tragedy of someone or other's version of 'Barbara Allen' in the Ambridge talent contest around the same time. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: The Walrus Date: 20 Jul 06 - 06:55 AM Just a silly bit of trivia (mentioned as an aside on another radio programme). It appears that, in 1954 there was a STAGE version of the Archers (with Jack Warner as Dan). W |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 24 Jul 06 - 09:07 AM Putting out trailers containing dramatic snippets of coming episodes does rather spoil the illusion that it's real, as well as spoiling the dramatic impact of these episodes when we do hear them. Are you listening, BBC? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ambridge Sky From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Jul 06 - 10:12 AM Yes Walrus, I heard that two, and did a double take. G. |
