Subject: Chimps are not music fans. From: The Shambles Date: 04 Jul 06 - 05:49 AM XXI Congress International Primate Society www.jps2006uganda.org According the latest research announced at the above conference, chimpanzees are not music fans. Allowed to control the music being piped into their envirionment and given the choice between classical, world, rock and no music, chimps chose the latter. But when they had to choose a type of music, they preferred rock. ------------------------ But perhaps that is because they could not choose folk music? |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: skipy Date: 04 Jul 06 - 06:05 AM The chimps that work for me prefer noise, this is generated by having as many radios & steros on as possible, all as loud as possible & all playing differant shite! It pisses me off! Skipy |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jul 06 - 06:48 AM Funny...that's what I would choose now, given the choice: no music. I greatly prefer silence most of the time. It's peaceful. I think you would find that most animals would prefer no music, given the choice. With no outside music or other artificially generated noise being programmed at one over a nearby set of speakers, one can hear the natural music of life as well as the creative music inside one's own head. Much better. I am annoyed and completely baffled by the habit of most people in this modern society to surround themselves with a constant artificial source of pre-programmed noise. I think they've gradually been driven crazy by modern society. Or...maybe they're really afraid of facing their own thoughts and they want something else to keep drowning those thoughts out and distracting them. The most grotesque example is the people who go camping in some beautiful spot in nature...and take along a stereo, a generator, and even a TV (!) in order to surround themselves with a bubble of babbling noise in the middle of that beautiful spot...and thus ruin it, in my opinion. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jul 06 - 06:51 AM Chongo doesn't play music all that much at home or at work (in the office), but he likes music when he goes out at night to a bar or club, in which case he prefers blues, swing, jazz, basically the music of the '40's. He's culturally stuck in the days of Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade, it seems. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Jul 06 - 07:06 AM As the result differs somewhat from prior reports, one must wonder about the age of the researchers (not of the chimps). If these were typical youngsters (<40) they probably thought that "music" has to be at >79dB, and just failed to give the chimps a volume control. In that case I'd prefer "none of the above" too. Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: *daylia* Date: 04 Jul 06 - 07:18 AM Maybe chimps prefer their own music, just like humans. Would you want to be inundated with the 'music' produced by, say, a herd of cows every day? I think not! Apparently male chimps use music to define boundaries and attract mates ...chimpanzees can locate another group by listening for their vocalizations. Vocalizations serve to keep potentially warring bands from stumbling into each other. The one thing that brings groups of chimpanzees together is crossbreeding. Male chimpanzees vocalize to attract females. It may be hard for the vocalization of one chimpanzee to be loud enough to catch the attention of a female from another group, but if several males "sing" in chorus, they have better odds of being heard and attracting females. There is an evolutionary advantage and pressure for males to sing together. The musical ability and behavior of Homo Sapiens originally evolved as an advantageous reproductive strategy in the ancestors of humans and chimpanzees. Human females are attracted to and choose human male mates that make music. Those males who are musical have a greater chance of reproducing. And smart chimps use music to help them quit chain-smoking, too. Y'hear, Chongo? :-) |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Jul 06 - 08:24 PM I think I'd prefer the kind of music cows might make to a lot of the music humans make. As for this kind of "research" - just imagine trying the same on some random bunch of humans who'd happened to end up in the same prison camp, and then claiming that somehow this entitled the "researcher" to co me up with some generalisation about human beings as a species? |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jul 06 - 08:47 PM Well put, McGrath! |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Genie Date: 05 Jul 06 - 01:53 AM very astute observation, McGrath. Reminds me of the "research" reported on in Playboy in the 1960s about the insatiable sexual appetites of dolphins. The research was done on captive dolphins in environments that offered little stimulation aside from each other, and someone observed that we too might go for endless orgies if locked up in a small room with nothing else to play with. I also question the extrapolation that because these chimps preferred "no noise" to "classical, world, or rock" they "don't like music." Did they try Ray Charles? §;-D |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Jul 06 - 03:49 AM And the 'classical'... what did they try for that? Mozart? Mendelsson? How about letting them loose on a CD collection... see what they'd really prefer. (Shades of Marcel the monkey in "Friends" who would always put on 'the Lion sleeps tonight'). LTS |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: leeneia Date: 05 Jul 06 - 12:11 PM If I were a boss, there would be no music in my establishment, because there is no one kind which is going to please everyone, and both workers and customers should be concentrating on their tasks. An exception would be a restaurant, where music (preferably non-irritating) shields one table from hearing the conversation of another. -------- I have two cats, and they like the music of our house. This probably explains why cats are more popular as pets than chimps. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 05 Jul 06 - 12:35 PM What is 'non-irritating' to the people at one table might be extremely irritating to those at another, and possibly most unpleasant for someone with synaesthesia affecting taste, such as certain voices or harmonies tasting of suet pudding, or gooseberries, or worse. And what, to people with normal hearing, shields one table from hearing the conversation of another, might shield people with slightly impaired hearing from the conversation at their own table. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Ebbie Date: 05 Jul 06 - 01:02 PM I agree, Topsie. I prefer NO music in restaurants or stores. Whenever I am made aware of music in those places the first thing that occurs to me is that the management is following someone's machinations in what 'works'. In other words, we are being manipulated for their own purposes. Which usually means, money. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Jul 06 - 06:36 PM Music in restaurants is there for a reason... ever notice how the music at lunch is upbeat and zippy, whereas later in the evening it becomes slower and softer? People will unconsciously chew in time to the music - fast music will make you eat quickly and leave the restaurant, thus freeing up a table for another customer. Slower music and you get slower feeding. Slower feeding means more time to digest and thus likely to eat more courses and spend more money. I've retreated from some stores a darn sight quicker than I went in when the music has been outrageously loud, I like to be able to hear what the assistant is saying to me. LTS |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Jul 06 - 08:18 PM I'm another who votes for NO music in stores and most restaurants, especially NO radio! If there must be music, let it be recorded music that is not too intrusive rather than some stupid radio station. But I would say that there are some restaurants where the music enhances the experience of dining, if it is carefully chosen recorded music that suits the mood of the place. For instance, the instrumental music that usually plays in Japanese restaurants suits them perfectly as far as I'm concerned. What one needs is a restaurant owner who has enough subtlety to actually choose specific recorded music that truly harmonizes with the place, rather than being lazy and just turning on the damn radio... If people like the atmosphere, they'll eat there. If they don't, they won't. I had any number of jobs over the years where I was tortured by having to listen to music I mostly couldn't stand for 8 hours a day, five days a week. Now I work at home in blessed silence. |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Ernest Date: 06 Jul 06 - 09:56 AM Genie: this is exactly the reason why chimps don`t use credit cards. Same goes for insurances - apart from the fact that very few insurance companies cover the risk of being eaten by a leopard anyway. Best Ernest |

Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: leeneia Date: 06 Jul 06 - 02:01 PM I was against music in restaurants until I the day I had dinner in a silent one and heard from the next table: "She was sick the WHOLE TIME she was pregnant!" followed by the details. The music should be unobtrusive, but it should also help mask conversations like that. |
Subject: RE: Chimps are not music fans. From: Kaleea Date: 06 Jul 06 - 02:14 PM Whenever we went to the "Monkey Island" section of the zoo (many, many moons ago), my Daddy used to always say we were visiting our family. Then when we were on the way to visit our family he'd sing, "All the monkeys aren't in the zoo, every day you meet quite a few." Come to think of it, our family has always been musical. Obviously, the above research is flawed. |
