Subject: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Bobert Date: 03 Jul 06 - 06:28 PM Well, I'm sure the UK'ers and DownUnderers coulen't care less about the 4th of July but fir us Yanks it's one of those special days with some unique and not so unique traditions... In the past when my son was living close enough for us to be together I'd journey up to Phantom Fireworks right over the Pennsylvania line from Maryland... Phantom is where you get the good stuff that really does go boom and then is was grillin' out in the back yard and then soon as it got dark... Boom, boom and more boom... But this year I think will be a lot quieter... Yeah, gonna meet a couple of my buddies who are driving down from DC and the three of us are going to play an hours worth of acoustic blues in downtown Luray, then hang 'round and listen to two other acoustic acts before retirin' to the farm fir a relaxed and firework-less evening... Works just fine fir me... So, what's everyone else doing??? Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: SharonA Date: 03 Jul 06 - 06:41 PM I'll be at the picnic-and-jam party that my friends throw every year. We'll still see fireworks: their neighbors like to shoot off the illegal ones in the back yard. A couple of years ago, the falling fireworks came uncomfortably close to my friends' yard. Who knows, maybe this year the neighbors will set fire to the tent we'll be jamming under! Nothin' like livin' life on the edge! |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: GUEST, Ebbie Date: 03 Jul 06 - 07:09 PM Somewhere along the way I hope to link up with JennieG, an Aussie far from home... Later I hope several of us will get together and make some music. psssst! The sun is shining and it is HOT. Must be at least 75 degrees, or at least close to it. Supposed to be the same tomorrow. July 4th is the only day of the year I have ever gotten sunburnt in Juneau, Alaska. Of course, I am also not usually outdoors all day. Our fireworks - over the ocean from a barge - will be held tonight at 12:01 AM. That's about as dark as it gets this time of year. Farther north they don't bother - they have their fireworks at New Year's. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Bunnahabhain Date: 03 Jul 06 - 08:34 PM Juneau is at 58 degrees north. I'm at 56, and the night thing scarley happens at this time of year. It is mighty impressive the contrast over the year.... |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Big Mick Date: 03 Jul 06 - 11:54 PM Neat little old fashioned 4th of July parade in Berlin, NJ. Then the Adventure Aquarium, and the Battleship New Jersey, then off to try and find a spot to watch the Philly fireworks in front of the Art Museum. They tell me it is hopeless to try and walk into them if you are not willing to camp out for about 12 hours. But with my grandkids being ages 5 and 2, that is hopeless. So we will try and fing a vantage point, maybe along Ben Franklin Boulevard, that we can park and see most of them. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jul 06 - 12:05 AM Our "July 4rth" was on Saturday, Bobert. July 1st is Canada Day. We beat ya to it by three days, eh? Same as last year. ;-) So today it was business as usual. Had to drive down to Toronto and pack a big shipment of steering wheels to send to Australia. |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: LadyJean Date: 04 Jul 06 - 12:32 AM I wish I was doing something more thrilling than giving my cat Grace O'Malley a bath. I wish I wasn't giving Gracie a bath period. But she's itchy, and a bath will probably help. |

Oh, and trying to catch up on sleep lost at one end by the heat and at the other end by the police helicopter hovering over the street at 4.00am this morning. I may wax my legs. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Jul 06 - 09:23 AM Sorry to hear of your loss Rap. It's been raining here in Maine this morning and is deliciously cool after the high temperatures of the last few days. I'm in the middle of cleaning the kitchen (Independence Day from grime!) but we really don't have any plans except, maybe, to stay the hell away from the shops and other places of mass gathering. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: mack/misophist Date: 04 Jul 06 - 09:57 AM May go see the fireworks, may not. We have them so often here it's no longer a big deal. A few months ago I caught a glimpse of some that had a burst shaped like Saturn (with it's rings). That might be nice to get a better look at. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: GUEST,Wesley S Date: 04 Jul 06 - 10:15 AM I'll be grilling some jerk chicken, we'll have some corn on the cob and apple pie too. No kidding. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: katlaughing Date: 04 Jul 06 - 10:29 AM Geez, Wesley, just 'cause the guy was a coward and and idiot you're gonna torture him?**bg** Even though I am bah-humbug about this holiday and our country, right now, we may go with our daughter and son to see what our grandson, 2.5 years, thinks of the fireworks this year. Like Mick, we'll just try to find a good parking spot somewhere 'cause you have to pay to get in the stadium and if you want a good seat you have to be there hours in advance. I've given Rog the day off from "honey-do's" BUT I think we will still putter in the yard a bit.:-) And, poor soul, he ahs to go to work this afternoon to lead a live remote to interview a decent politician. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Ebbie Date: 04 Jul 06 - 11:59 AM As I noted before, Juneau, Alaska, has its fireworks the night before the 4th- although it is after midnight. It doesn't get dark enough this time of year to have it earlier. Dogs tend to freak out over the noise of the blasts; I've seen dogs cry in absolute panic. After having music earlier I came home and stayed in with the animals the rest of the night. I turned on the television for the live broadcast of the fireworks while the blasts down the hill somethng like 6 air blocks away shook the walls. What surprised me last night is that my Cairn terrier was much less affected than was my cat. The Cairn got under my chair and stayed there, but the cat shook every time there was a BOOM and his eyes were absolutely huge. It was a nice feeling, though, to discover that the cat took comfort from my presence and soothing messages. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Alice Date: 04 Jul 06 - 12:46 PM Hardly slept last night as my dog barked continuously from fear of all the fireworks going off all night long. |
Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: GUEST,Wesley S Date: 04 Jul 06 - 01:36 PM Kat - darlin' - I'm from Texas so you know I hate to brag - but you haven't lived until you've eaten my jerk chicken. Preferable with a large amount of an icy cold beverage of your choice very close by. Brave men become weak in the knees, pretty women develop a "glow" and childrens IQ's jump up 10 points or more. But as I said I hate to brag. Usually the only thing that can cool someone off after tasting it is a large slice of my Key Lime pie with the oreo cookie crust. |

Subject: RE: BS: How Ya' Spending the 4th??? From: Alice Date: 04 Jul 06 - 07:49 PM We have an arsonist in town for the 4th of July. Burned down a barn, burned parked cars, then the pavilion in our park where the farmer's market was founded, where many a hockey game was played in the winter, where family reunions were held. Millions to rebuild the pavilion, a major loss to the town. |
