Subject: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: nutty Date: 03 Jul 06 - 06:21 AM I have used Zone Alarm since I obtained a computer, so I have never had to look at other software. Now Zone Alarm has stopped supporting Windows98 and WindowsME and I can't update anymore. Does anyone know of a reliable (free) firewall? Has anyone used Comodo?? ADVICE NEEDED ... THANX |

That said - if the (now "obsolete" version) blocks unwanted traffic, will it not continue to do the job we need even if they don't come up with a "new improved" version for our old decrepit PC? Grisoft AVG seems to work oik on my machine , but I am on XP - You could give it a try see if it will work for older software ! |

It's a big download, so if you haven't got broadband, find a mate who can make a CD for you. You'll also need a network card in each computer and a crossover network cable. |

From: Paul Burke Date: 03 Jul 06 - 08:49 AM It works on very low end stuff- any Pentium, 150MHz, 2G HDD, 64M memory, monitor and CD drive only needed when you are setting it up. You can probably pick one up out of a skip. USB support required only if you use a USB modem. |

They might call it broadband, but 4Mbits/sec is only half a megabyte per second, scarcely moving in computer terms. Remember these boxes were running 10Mb/second Ethernet back in the stone age. |

I finally bit the bullet and put Symantec back into my machines. I was tired of the blue screen of death that Earthlink came up with too often when it wasn't playing nicely with my software. Symantec is bully but it is more stable. SRS |
