Subject: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: nutty Date: 03 Jul 06 - 06:21 AM I have used Zone Alarm since I obtained a computer, so I have never had to look at other software. Now Zone Alarm has stopped supporting Windows98 and WindowsME and I can't update anymore. Does anyone know of a reliable (free) firewall? Has anyone used Comodo?? ADVICE NEEDED ... THANX |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 03 Jul 06 - 07:29 AM I daresay it is likely to become a problem with any alternatives as well. That said - if the (now "obsolete" version) blocks unwanted traffic, will it not continue to do the job we need even if they don't come up with a "new improved" version for our old decrepit PC? I await opinions from the experts... Quack! Geoff. |

From: Leadfingers Date: 03 Jul 06 - 07:46 AM I understood that Updates were neccessary to keep up with changes to the tricks that these so and sos use to get their nasty little Virii into our machines ! Grisoft AVG seems to work oik on my machine , but I am on XP - You could give it a try see if it will work for older software ! |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Paul Burke Date: 03 Jul 06 - 07:55 AM One approach is to use an old computer running the free, Linux based Smoothwall. It's a big download, so if you haven't got broadband, find a mate who can make a CD for you. You'll also need a network card in each computer and a crossover network cable. |

Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 03 Jul 06 - 08:00 AM How much grunt to run that then, a P3 300, 800? a Pentioum 1 100? How much ram... |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Paul Burke Date: 03 Jul 06 - 08:49 AM It works on very low end stuff- any Pentium, 150MHz, 2G HDD, 64M memory, monitor and CD drive only needed when you are setting it up. You can probably pick one up out of a skip. USB support required only if you use a USB modem. |

Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 03 Jul 06 - 09:06 AM I take it Paul that the cheap boxes have enough grunt to handle Broadband? |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Paul Burke Date: 03 Jul 06 - 09:12 AM It's only passing network packets about, and that doesn't take much. They might call it broadband, but 4Mbits/sec is only half a megabyte per second, scarcely moving in computer terms. Remember these boxes were running 10Mb/second Ethernet back in the stone age. |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Bill D Date: 03 Jul 06 - 10:12 AM I've been using AVG by Grisoft for 4-5 years now....automatic updates and dependable. |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Jul 06 - 11:06 AM AVG is antivirus, isn't it? Is it also a firewall? I finally bit the bullet and put Symantec back into my machines. I was tired of the blue screen of death that Earthlink came up with too often when it wasn't playing nicely with my software. Symantec is bully but it is more stable. SRS |
Subject: RE: A substitute for Zone Alarm? From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 Jul 06 - 11:39 AM I think the current AVG has an integrated firewall. Panda (which I run) certainly does. |
