Subject: Lyr Req: Playing The Game In The West - Formby sn From: Brakn Date: 02 Jul 06 - 02:54 PM A George Formby senior song. A few lines I'm not sure of. Can anyone help? Thanks. Since I've been in London it's easy to see That no other Johnny looks smarter than me I'm going the pace, that means playing the game I'm one of those gay dogs that's got a bad name I'm what folks would call a d devil you know No sooner an argument than it's a blow I've seen better days 'til I don't care a sou? I've gone to the dogs and you know what it's through Playing the game in the west Playing the game in the city Leading the life that's **** Flirting with Maude and Kitty Strolling along the Strand Knocking policemen about And I'm not going home till a quarter to ten 'Cause it's my night out The boys in the west seem quite jealous of me Because I am dressed rather tricky you see When I smoke ***** el stinko as everyone knows It's easy to make the cigar come down me nose For a days shooting I went yesterday When I'd broken four bottles, I heard the man say "????????????????, you're a marvellous shot Are you in the army?" I said "Yes Sir, I'm not" I'm playing the game in the west Leading the life that's thrilling Out of a two bob ???? All I've got left is a shilling Treating the girls to charm Throwing my money about And it wouldn't take me long to stop out all night 'Cause it's my night out |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Playing The Game In The West - Formby From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 02 Jul 06 - 03:52 PM Oh well, here's the third verse anwyway. Enjoy! I met an old college chum, he calls me his "strife" He said, George you're leading a terrible life, Society life cannot always suit you, This collar you wear you may someday slip through. Why don't you give up this life that's so fast, This lemon and dashers and women won't last I said, it's no use now I don't care a jot, I've got ninepence left and I'll finish the lot. Ploaying the game in the west, that's what I love to be doing, Quaffing the sparkling wine, I'm on my road to ruin, Been out since seven o'clock, flashing and dashing about, And it wouldn't take me long to stop out all night, 'cause it's my night out LFF |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Playing the Game in the West (G Formby Sr From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Jul 06 - 11:46 PM There is a sound file of PLAYING THE GAME IN THE WEST (recorded by George Formby Senior in 1910) on this page: http://www.rfwilmut.clara.net/musichll/xformby.html (as well as JOHN WILLIE, COME ON, another song from 1908). The recorded version consists of the two verses and choruses posted by Brakn above; it omits the part posted by LFF. (I think it was common in those days for sheet music to contain additional verses that were omitted from recordings.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Playing the Game in the West (G Formby Sr From: Brakn Date: 07 Jul 06 - 03:46 AM Thanks Jim. That's where I got the first two verses from. Chas and Dave also did a version with only one verse which was a mishmash of all three proper verses. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Playing the Game in the West (G Formby Sr From: GUEST,Keith Date: 07 Jul 06 - 12:52 PM George Formby Senior was a giant on the music hall scene. at the time of his death he was fully booked for many years in advance. He wrote some fantastic songs, including one we got from Mike Huckenhuill which borders on the surreal. It's called "My grandfathers Clock", a parody of the American original!! Anyone interested can hear a snippet on our website www.peglegferret.com This is not a plug I just think the man was amazing!, much better than his film star son. |

I'll try and rectify that in the near future.....In the meantime you could listen to five other songs from the album...unfortunately not Grandfathers clock!!! |
