Subject: Obit: Fred Trueman From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 Jul 06 - 10:28 AM Fiery Fred has finaly popped his clogs and gone to the great wicket in the sky. I don't think even the pearly gates will take that sort of pace for long. See The BBC for more details. Even a staunch Lancastrian like myself cannot help be saddened at the passing of such a character. May you continue your innings in peace up there, Fred. Dave the Gnome |

Subject: RE: Obit: Fred Trueman From: Les from Hull Date: 01 Jul 06 - 11:00 AM "When an old cricketer leaves the crease Well you never know whether he's gone. If sometimes you're catching a fleeting glimpse of a twelth man at silly mid-on And it could be Geoff and It could be John with a new ball stinging his tail And it could be me and it could be thee and it could be the sting in the ale." Another hero gone - "I just don't know what's going off out there" |
Subject: RE: Obit: Fred Trueman From: nutty Date: 01 Jul 06 - 12:54 PM It was firey Fred that I first heard tell this joke. What's the definition of a gentleman?? A man who gets out of the bath to go to the toilet. They got worse from then on. Certainly a wysiwyg kind of a man. Yorkshire will miss him |
Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Jul 06 - 02:52 PM I cannot remember the details now as old age creeps rapidly up on me, but sometime on a tour to Australia in the days when the team went by boat Fred was introduced to some Sheik or other who had 247 wives. "Does he know if he had another three he could have a new ball?" asked Fred. |

Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Jul 06 - 08:30 PM He reminds me of a famous aussie cricketer - both of them from a class of person rapidly disappearing - who was a WWII fighter pilot. "What? Cricket? Pressure? Now a Messerschmidt up your tail - THAT'S pressure!!!" Something which Parky says should be inscribed on the dressing room walls of every sports ground.... we need to keep things in perspective. |

Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 02 Jul 06 - 03:15 AM One of the (numerous) quotes attributed to Fred - when it was suggested by some wag that Fred had a rather large backside, his response (allegedly) was, "Hey lad, when tha's got a big nail, tha' needs a big 'ammer to knock it in with". Absolutely priceless! S:0) |
Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: John O'L Date: 02 Jul 06 - 03:21 AM He was the first bowler to take 300 test wickets. Someone asked him if he thought anyone would ever beat that record. 'If anyone beats it, they'll be bloody tired,' he said. RIP Firey |
Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 02 Jul 06 - 05:47 AM My favourite Trueman story as related by my late father-in-law who could never finish the story as laughter always took him before the punchline! Fred was opening the bowling at an Old Trafford Roses match in the late 50's. The Lancashire umpire standing at the bowler's end was renowned for his impartiality apart from hating all things Yorkshire! First ball Fred steamed down, the batsman plays forward, definite snick, major appeal from 1st slip who held the catch, umpire shakes his head. Second ball, batsman plays blindly forward, ball strikes front pad, plumb LBW, huge appeal, umpire shakes his head. Fred calmly walks back to his mark moves it a couple of paces back and once again steams in, batsman hears it as the ball goes between bat and pad and is then deafened by the sound of his wicket exploding, middle stump over the keeper's head, bails on the pavilion steps! Accompanied by a very old fashioned look to the umpire Fred adds another killer delivery, "Aye lad, I nearly got the bugger that time tha' knows! Safe home Fred, safe home. |

Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: Hrothgar Date: 02 Jul 06 - 06:03 AM He was greatly liked and admired here in Australia, despite the things he did to us on the field. I akways enjoyed his commentary on the ABC, and his fund of stories was wonderful. My favourite story about him was not from when he was playing, but when he was commenting on a match. During a slow patch, the other commentators were discussing great fast bowlers, and only after some time did they notice that Fred had gone quiet. When they asked him why, he said, in that dry manner of his, "Three hundred Test wickets and you haven't given me a mention!" |
Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Jul 06 - 08:06 AM Fred allus reckoned he'd have gad 400 Test wickets if he wasn't overlooked by poncy southern selectors or 'dropped for discipline'. It was painful to see England's opening attack of Flavell and Coldwell (who they?) when Fred was available to play for England but not selected. Still that got him more games for Yorkshire. If they'd've played as many Tests in his day as they do now, he'd've got even more than that? And his daughter married Rachel Welch's son. |

Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: Bruce from Bathurst Date: 02 Jul 06 - 01:50 PM This has not been a good week. We've lost Fred Trueman and a brace of fine folk musicians in quick succession. There is a link. Fred Trueman first came to Australia as a feisty, in your face, fast bowler at a time when I was 'slightly' inspired to look at a cricketing future. (Hah! Such delusions.) Fred Trueman from Yorkshire will always have 307 more Test wickets than Bruce from Bathurst. Like Fred Trueman, Igor Medio and Carlos Redondo also made several trips to Australia, but as members of the wonderful band Felpeyu. Igor and Carlos introduced us to their Asturian musical heritage from northern Spain and made many friends along the way. Felpeyu even inspired us to form a band to play Asturian music - quite an achievement. Sadly, Igor and Carlos died in a motor vehicle accident last weekend on their way to a gig and right now they are greatly missed by their friends around the world. Fred Trueman was from Yorkshire, not England, and Igor Medio and Carlos Redondo came from Asturias, not Spain. For me, pride in their regional cultural identity is the link between them. They will be missed. Bruce |

Subject: RE: Obit: cricket hero Fred Trueman (June 2006) From: HuwG Date: 04 Jul 06 - 10:16 AM A tale about Fred concerned an Indian batsman. As Fred began thundering towards the crease for the first ball, the batsman held up his hand to stop play and asked for the sight screens to be moved. They were pushed slightly sideways and Fred once again began his run up. The batsman again held up his hand and asked for the sight screens to be moved back to their original position. The umpire asked, "Where exactly do you want the sight screens to be placed ?" The batsman replied, "Between me and that mad bastard with the ball". |
