Subject: Chord Req: PC Program for chord determination From: HiHo_Silver Date: 27 Jun 06 - 04:49 PM I have been searching for a program that is capable of writing chords from midi or sheet music. Do not know if this is possible. Any info along this line appreciated. Thanks: Jim |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: PC Program for chord determination From: M.Ted Date: 27 Jun 06 - 06:28 PM There are a lot of programs that calculate chords from MIDI programs--and they have been around for years. My 1991 version of Finale did it, and I believe that the recent versions of Band-in-a-box can do it-- The thing is, it isn't generally a very useful way to get the chords for a song--The reason for that is that a MIDI file is as performance file, and if you add up all the notes being played by all the voices, they become chords that are different than those that any instrument would actually play. The bottom line is that, to get close to what you want, you have to do a lot of cleaning and trimming of the MIDI file--even then, you have to arrange what you end up with into something usable. I'm not saying don't try it, just don't expect that I'll solve all your chord finding problems-- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: PC Program for chord determination From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 27 Jun 06 - 11:08 PM It is more fun....when you learn to distinguish chords by ear....or trial and error.
50% of what you get out of an excellent program (like CakeWalk) STILL requires MAJOR tweaking with the 7ths and dim4ths.
Take three months of the summer...learn the basic I,IV,V theory and expand.

Subject: RE: Chord Req: PC Program for chord determination From: Mark Clark Date: 27 Jun 06 - 11:22 PM HiHo, Both M.Ted and Gargoyle have given you good advice. If your ear isn't yet developed enough to come up with basic chords just by hearing the tune (or MIDI file), your next best--and probably fastest--way to get accurate chords is simply to post a request here on the forum. You'll find that your requests are usually answered very quickly, sometimes within minutes. But do work on learning to "hear" the progression in a melody. It isn't that tough for much of the folk/pop material under discussion here. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: PC Program for chord determination From: pavane Date: 28 Jun 06 - 02:06 AM My program 'Find MIDI chords' does what you ask. Unlike many programs, it DOES NOT just list all the notes being played at the same time. It actually 'averages' the notes over a (selectable) fraction of a bar, and removes the shortest ones, until a chord is found. You can choose whether to list only simplified chords, or to include more complex ones. You can also choose whether you want one, two or four chords to be shown per bar. The program will also try to identify the actual key, which is not always specified within MIDI files, as it an optional item. I originally wrote the program for supplier of professional MIDI backing tracks, and it was distributed by them for some years. I now distribute an updated version myself.
