This obituary from the Guardian, for Yitzhak Ben-Aharon, 1906-2006, is an interesting story of not just Ben-Aharon's life, but of the political struggles in Israel. Before the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Ben-Aharon called for a unilateral withdrawal from the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel since 1967. He led the powerful Histadrut labour federation from 1969 to 1973, but by the early 1970s his devotion to Labour's founding verities seemed anachronistic. Ben-Aharon retired from politics after Likud defeated Labour in the 1977 election. "If this is the people's will, then the people should be replaced," he proclaimed - a remark that passed into Israeli folklore.
