Wasn't it written by Leonard Cohen?

well - not hard to find if you look it up under Leonard Cohen - who recorded it in 1984:

The chords on that link are either slightly different or just plain wrong. Try this and see what you think:

Now I've (G)heard there was a (Em)secret chord that (G)David played, and it (Em)pleased the Lord
But (C)you don't really (D)care for music, (G)do ya? (D)
It (G)goes like this: the (C)fourth, the (D)fifth, the (Em)minor fall, the (C)major lift
The (D)baffled king com-(Bm)posing Halle-(Em)lujah

Halle-(C)lujah   Halle-(Em)lujah
Halle-(C)lujah   Halle-(G)lu-(D)u-(G)jah (D)

As well, look around the internet for the verses you want to include in your interpretation. I've heard that Cohen actually wrote about 16 verses.

For the record, Leonard not only recorded it, he wrote it, didn't he?

(Come to think of it, does Leonard ever record other people's songs?)

That song was featured in the movie Shrek (German for "Terror") and also on an episode of "Without a Trace". I had to check the web and find out who's song and who was singing it. Haunting! Of course it HAD to be Leonard Cohen. The man is a true poet. I can't remember the Canadian fellow's name who sang it ( among others) but Mr. Cohen does it like no other. Incidentally, the oft used word "Hallelujah"is found only 4 time in the New Testament all in the book of Revelation, I think in the 19th chapter. The Hebrew term from which it derives is found 8 or 9 time in the OT and it means "Praise Yahweh"

Found at www.leonardcohenfiles.com/hallelujah.html,
Slightly different. I hope I haven't messed this up!

(G)I heard there was a (Em)secret chord
(G)that David played and it (Em)pleased the Lord,
But (C)you *(2x)don't really (D)care for music do (G)you. (D)
(G)It goes like this the (/C)fourth the (D)fifth,
the (/Em)minor fall and the (/C)major lift
The (/Em)(D)baffled king compo(D)(D7/+?)sing Hall(Em)elujah
Halle(C)lujah, Hal(Em)lelujah, Halle(C)lujah, Hall(G)e(D)lu(G)jah
*2x?

KD Lang version chords asked for, these may be different.

Seven verses at the leonardcohenfiles.com. Two versions in thread 61760. The one from the Various Positions cd seems closer to what I heard KDLang sing on the award show: Hallelujah

IIRC, one of the guys who covered this song was Rufus Wainwright.
The song was also used in an episode of "Scrubs" and an episode of "The West Wing."

I think the "Shrek" version was John Cale (not "JJ")

It's been recorded by so many people now, but the most affecting version I've heard was done live by Lisa Moscatiello (not quite sure if the spelling's correct). She had a 'cello accompianist which added a haunting extra voice to the song. I don't know if she's recorded it; I hope so.

Simon Ritchie does it as a demo track on Squeezebox Schizophrenia. Unbeatable . . .

The Canadian Hall of Fame Tribute to Leonard Cohen (about a month ago) included KDLang singing his "Halelujah," moving Leonard Cohen to tears. The most memorable version I have heard. The Governor General of Canada gave the tribute.
I am looking forward to a recording of the song by KDLang.

Found KDLang's "Hallelujah" on Hymns of the 49th Parallel, track 6, Nonesuch. A fine album!

Jeff Buckley did a version on "Grace" - extremely powerful.
