Subject: Origins: Composer/Source for 'My Father's Cabin'? From: GUEST,celticsinger@hotmail.com Date: 26 May 06 - 02:37 PM Can anyone tell me who wrote a song which may (or may not) be titled "My Father's Cabin Small" ? A friend of mine brought back a tape of the Ladies' English song competition at the 2004 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and on it is an unidentifed woman singing a song freely in jig time which begins with: "Well, it's of my father's cabin I will softly sing to you; The walls are a little bit [muffled] with a touch of golden hue; in the evening time we gather 'round the neighbours one and all; from the heathery hills of Antrim to the slopes of Donegal." Other passages include: "Sure, the table is set, the tae is wet; there's current cake galore, the likes of which I'm certain sure you've never seen before. The roof is not the highest, and the windows, they are small. It's my castle in North Ireland; it's my father's cabin small." and "It was in my father's cabin underneath the roof of thatch: 'God save you!' was the greeting as you'd softly lift the latch. With a kindly grip and smiling face, they'd greet you one and all. ...... in my father's cabin small." Hoping someone can help me find and contact either the singer or the composer - preferably the latter, as I'd like to get a full lyric set and permission to perform same locally at sessions in Southern California. Cheers, Chris |

From: GUEST,celticsinger@hotmail.com Date: 17 Jun 06 - 03:27 PM Can anyone tell me who wrote a song which may (or may not) be titled "My Father's Cabin Small" ? I've been searching the web for phrases from the lyric, but haven't found anything, which leads me to believe that it may be newly written, or, at least, never recorded. The singer may (?) have been a woman named Anne-Marie. Hoping someone can help me find and contact either the singer or the composer - preferably the latter, as I'd like to get a full lyric set and permission to record the song. Cheers, Chris |

Subject: RE: Origins: composer for 'My Father's Cabin Small' ? From: GUEST,celticsinger@hotmail.com Date: 18 Jun 06 - 05:07 PM Many thanks, Joe, for keeping up the search. I think the woman singing this on the tape may possibly have been Anne Marie Kavanaugh of Buiríos Ó Luigheach, Tiobraid Árann -- she came in 2nd in the All-Ireland that year. If this guess is true, it would most likely be a song from Tipperary -- probably from the local singers' circle. Does anyone have any contact info for Anne Marie Kavanaugh? If so, please send to celticsinger@hotmail.com Many thanks, Chris |

Subject: RE: Origins: composer for 'My Father's Cabin Small' ? From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 18 Jun 06 - 06:27 PM Also recorded, it seems, by Nora Butler of Nenagh on her cd The Dawning of the Day. Not necessarily related, I find a reference to a recording, 'My Father's Cabin', by the tenor Joseph Maguire, on Decca (USA, Irish series) 12151A, matrix no. 63153, 13 January 1938. Owen Kelly ( http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/sites/CCE/education/Treoir/2000Tr4/Kelly.htm ) refers to a 'My Father's Cabin' as a Donegal song. |

Subject: RE: Origins: composer for 'My Father's Cabin Small From: GUEST Date: 18 Jun 06 - 11:07 PM Thanks to "Guest" for setting me straight on the spelling of Ann-Marie Kavanaugh's name. And thanks to Mr. Douglas for the additional information. Where did you find the reference to "My Father's Cabin" being on Nora Butler's The Dawning of the Day? I've just done a cursory search at Google, but failed to turn up a supporting page. I was hoping, perhaps, to find an email address for Ms. Butler (or Ms. Kavanaugh.) Given the reference in the lyric itself, I'd say Mr. Kelly's statement that the song is a Donegal song (or, perhaps, a Northern Irish song?) is correct. Thanks again to all the Mudcatters for turning your prodigious memories on this quest. Chris |

Subject: RE: Origins: composer for 'My Father's Cabin Small From: GUEST,celticsinger@hotmail.com Date: 19 Jun 06 - 01:29 AM Thanks so much, Mr. Douglas! It certainly looks right, doesn't it? Won't know for certain until I hear it, so I'll have to have a sniff around the internet to see if I can come up with a copy of the album... and possibly a way to contact Ms. Butler herself. Cheers, Chris |

Subject: RE: Origins: My Father's Cabin Small From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Apr 11 - 09:09 AM You can hear a sample of Nora Butler singing MY FATHER'S CABIN SMALL from her album "The Dawning Of The Day" at CDBaby. Here's what I could transcribe from that sample: ...Barney he could make the fiddle sing, And my mother too, God rest her soul, could make the valleys ring. With her songs of Irish bravery and her ballads of Coolin, (?) Sure they'd echo from the mountains to the bottom of the glen. Sure it's of my father's cabin with that simple rover patch, (?) "God save you" was the greeting.... It would be nice to have complete lyrics posted here at Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: Origins: My Father's Cabin Small From: GUEST,Kathy at Riley Date: 09 Sep 11 - 11:58 AM I listened to the Nora Butler version and this is what I make of it. Father's name Bernie/Barney? There's a line in the second to the last verse I couldn't quite catch, but I think the rest is fairly accurate. My Father's Cabin Small Sure, it's of my father's cabin I will softly sing to you The walls, a little bit slanted and the thatch, a golden hue In the evening time we'd gather, all the neighbors, one and all From the heathery hills of Antrim to the slopes of Donegal For the table is set, the tea is wet, there's currant cake galore And the likes of which, I'm certain, that you've never seen before The turf is burning brightly and the fiddle is by the wall Sure, we'll sing and dance 'til morning in my father's cabin small My father's name was Bernie, he could make the fiddle sing And my mother, too, God rest her soul, could make the valleys ring With her songs of Irish bravery and her ballads of Cuchulain Sure, they'd echo from the mountains to the bottom of the glen Sure, it's of my father's cabin with its simple roof of thatch "God save you all," is the greeting as you softly lift the latch With a kindly grip and a smiling face that greet you one and all It's my castle in old Ireland, it's my father's cabin small For the skillet is on the fire and tea is in the mug There's not an Irish cabin half so cozy and so snug The roof is not the highest and the windows, they are small But the half door swinging freely bids a welcome to you all No longer on Erin's Isle I'll sit upon the golden strand To toil away the weary years that a foreign land I'll stand alone like someone on a shore that's far from home Far away from my father's cabin and the hills I used to roam For the table is set, the tea is wet, there's currnat cake galore And the likes of which, I'm certain, sure you've never seen before The turf is burning brightly and the fiddle is by the wall Sure, we'll sing and dance 'til morning in my father's cabin small |
