My mother asked me if I knew this song. Apparently Terry Wogan used to play it on the radio. She thinks it was Australian.

Any ideas?

Slim Dusty ?? Interesting that he had only two 'Hit' records in Uk , with a twenty something year gap !

Did Slim Dusty meet with HipFlaskAndy then? Was this song written as a dedication to Duncan McFarlane? :-)

Slim Dusty and a Pub with no beer - oh yes I remember it well.

Mediocre, vapid and mundane. None of these words rhyme but they are all applicable to this song known locally as "I'd like to have a beer with Duncan" or Duncan for short.

Slim wrote some passably good songs in his time and is considered to be a country legend in Australia with some justification but that song and its music rates as an entry for an entry in the worst Austarlian songs of all time category and a low point in a great career IMHO.

In its time here it even had some kind of hit status in radio so someone out there must have liked it. Everyone I know just turned the radio off.

Dont bother spending any time learning it there are heaps of better songs around.

Cheers,

Andrez

I love to have a beer with Duncan
I love to have a beer with Dunc.
We drink in moderation
And we never ever ever get rollin' drunk
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Duncan
'Cause Duncan's me mate, yeah

I love to have a beer with Colin
I love to have a beer with Col.
We drink in moderation
And it doesn't really matter if he brings his doll
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Colin
'Cause Colin's me mate, mm-mm-mm

I love to have a beer with Kevin
Oh I love to have a beer with Kev.
We drink in moderation
And he drives me home in his big old Chev.
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Kevin
'Cause Kevin's me mate

I love to have a beer with Patrick
I love to have a beer with Pat
We drink in moderation
And it wouldn't really matter if the beer was flat
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Patrick
'Cause Patrick's me mate - Change key

I love to have a beer with Robert
I love to have a beer with Bob
We drink in moderation
Just one more and back on the job
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Robert
'Cause Robert's me mate

I love to have a beer with Duncan
Oh I love to have a beer with Dunc.
We drink in moderation
And we never ever ever get rollin' drunk
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Duncan
'Cause Duncan's me mate
I love to have a beer with Du

I only had to look at 3 slim dusty sites to find lyric.
Thanks v much tel. My mum is just learning computering and was very impressed.

There is or was a legendary bush pilot in northern Canada known as "Drunken Duncan". Interestingly I don't think he ever crashed.

Btw, Slim Dusty didn't write "Pub With No Beer", but his version is responsible for it's popularity.

It's as Andrez said above: "I'd like to have a beer with Duncan" or "Duncan" for short and by Slim Dusty as far as i can make out.

My mum likes it because her father and my brother are called Duncan and one of the verses mentions Robert or Bob which is my fathers name.

It sounds like it is one of those songs were the value lies in the performance which is somewhat at odds with the very sober lyrics. It is not hard to imagine extremely dull versions by people who think they are funny.

To the query above, no it goes down with me like a lead balloon and Its no consolation at all to know that there are even worse songs out there as well..... but thats another thread.

Songs by Slim that do have something going for them include "When the rain tumbles down in July" or "Losing my blues tonight" which are right up there in the Aussie song lexicon for poerty, imagery and melody.

I guess that in the end its horses for courses so that no matter what the song if someone can make a connection with it thats great. So I can relate to the fact that a mum can connect with the song. It doesnt make the song any better when considered from any perspective of merit though and in my view might properly be seen to be something that is only performed in private between consenting adults.
Cheers,

Andrez

BTW: I always thought "Pub" was Slims song and wasnt aware that it had different origins. Would Marg or anyone else have a link or reference to the original authorship of the song?

G'day Andrez,

The "credit" to Pub with No Beer will be to Gordon Parsons. I have a CD made from a sort of a "pirate" recording of one of Slim's concert's up in Toowoomba ... around 1956 ... where Gordon sings the song, not Slim.

However, the words are a localised "retread" by Gordon of Paddy Sheehan's 1943/4 poem A Pub without Beer - published after the beer shortage from celebrating Allied victory in the Battle of the Coral Sea ... and the tune is simply the first half of Stephen Foster;s Beautiful Dreamer. I gather this sort of loose handling of credit is common in the US end of 'country music'.

Regards,

Bob

"Duncan" isn't meant to be a work of great literary value - it's just a bit of fun.
