Subject: Bluegrass nr Edinburgh, 23-24/6/2006 From: GUEST Date: 13 Jun 06 - 02:24 PM Russell Cooper Memorial Picking Weekend ======================================= Sun Inn, Lothianbridge, near Edinburgh (on the A7 just north of Newtongrange and the Scottish Mining Museum; look for the viaduct). 23-24 June 2006 (Friday night and all day Saturday; in previous years the survivors have had a gospel morning on the Sunday). Camping: Lothianbridge Campsite (across the road) 0131 663 6120 Hotel accommodation: Sun Inn, 0131 663 2456 Free, donations and raffle to Macmillan Crossroads Carers Project. Yours truly (clarinet and washboard) will be there at some point, certainly on the Saturday evening. This is the fourth one, I think; players come from all over the UK. The Sun has a long bar that allows two sessions to happen at opposite ends, it's a very good venue. |

Subject: RE: Bluegrass nr Edinburgh, 23-24/6/2006 From: GUEST,Friendly northerner Date: 13 Jun 06 - 07:03 PM Greetings Guest, Are you part of the the gang from the "ensign Ewart" sessions? I'll never forget my first (and only) peanut butter and jelly sarnie round at Russell and Betty's bit in Edinburgh. Will Definately try to get up there. regards N.D. |
Subject: RE: Bluegrass nr Edinburgh, 23-24/6/2006 From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 13 Jun 06 - 07:22 PM I only got to know the local bluegrass crowd after moving out here to Newtongrange - never really knew Russell. Betty's Edinburgh session is on the first Thursday of each month at the Northern Bar in Canonmills. Should have added, for anybody using public transport: the Sun Inn is on the no.29 Lothian Regional Transport daytime bus route and the N31 night bus route. The sessions don't generally go particularly late but you can't get stuck if they do. The Sun's restaurant is pretty good too, you din't need to scour Midlothian looking for somewhere to eat. |

Subject: RE: Bluegrass nr Edinburgh, 23-24/6/2006 From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 14 Jun 06 - 04:49 PM You might have been happier if I'd said "bluegrass, old-time and Americana", which is what the mix actually is, but Mudcat doesn't let you do topic lines that long. I'm about to start learning the accordion, maybe I'll bring that along next year (hint: that was okay by Mr Monroe). I have rather little time for the "you must only use an instrument on the officially approved .list" attitude for any kind of music (the wannabe-Irish scene is riddled with it). What matters is the style you use in playing the thing. If you can get your pipe organ to a ceilidh band gig and sound like Bobby Macleod when you play it, go for it. |
