CELTIC THUNDER
(www.myspace.com/celticthunder)

Tonight's headline act are Celtic Thunder - an exciting four-piece band who are impressing all who hear them with their inventive arrangements, energized tune sets, and musical virtuosity. Performing traditional and contemporary folk music from the UK, Ireland and Denmark, Laura Grime, Chris Meredith, Kirstine Sand and Amy Thatcher are all folk music students at Newcastle University. Celtic Thunder have already wowed Newcastle City Hall and The Sage Gateshead with their foot-stomping combination of fiddles, accordion, piano and vocals. These rising stars of the Newcastle folk scene are definitely not to be missed!

SANDRA KERR AND "WERCA'S FOLK"

Werca's Folk Women's Choir were set up as part of the hugely successful "20,000 Voices" project under the direction of Sandra Kerr, and have since established a reputation for "vibrant singing, vivid communication and visual appeal". They take their name from the 8th century Werca, variously described as "Holy Woman" or "Witchy Woman", who gave her name to the village of Warkworth, where Sandra lives.
Sandra has had a long and distinguished career as both performer and teacher. She is a highly respected singer and multi-instrumentalist, and performs with her daughter Nancy Kerr, and James Fagan. She is also a core lecturer on the Newcastle University Folk Degree.

KATIE DOHERTY and friends
(www.myspace.com/katiedohertyband)

Katie Doherty's "fantastically pure and powerful voice" and dynamic, versatile piano have the power to raise the spirits or bring a tear to the eye, such is the emotional impact of her music.
Katie is a phenomenal singer, whose voice has limitless appeal. She has been singing folk and jazz since childhood, and lately has been a member of the band "Roll a Penny". In 2005, Katie won the coveted MBF Award for Song Creation, and, with "Roll a Penny", was selected to play showcase slots at some of northern England's most influential folk institutions, including Brampton Live! festival, The Sage Gateshead, and York's Black Swan Folk Club. Katie's songs straddle the often risky divide between traditional and contemporary music with ease and integrity - gaining praise from folk and pop fans alike.

"DEEP SHED" BLUEGRASS BAND
(www.myspace.com/laurabethsalter)

A new band to grace the local folk scene, Deep Shed were formed by four students on the Newcastle Folk Degree to fill the apparent void of bluegrass music on Tyneside. At recent gigs, including playing to a full house at the Egypt Cottage in Byker, the band have proved to be an enormous hit - we challenge you to resist the urge to get to your feet and start dancing! Christi Andropolis, Aiden Curran, Laura Salter (www.myspace.com/laurabethsalter), and Dan Walsh all have powerful, raw vocal styles - sometimes emotive, sometimes animated - and they all know how to tell a good story. Deep Shed combine their voices with guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo to create energetic, heartfelt bluegrass, Appalachian and blues music... with a twist!

FRAN SMITH
(www.myspace.com/fransmith)

Fran Smith is a singer and classically-trained pianist from Hull in East Yorkshire. Her singing style is rooted in the traditional and folk music of Britain and Ireland, but her material varies from the traditional to the contemporary, through folk, rock, country and blues - she is influenced by artists as wide ranging as Bob Dylan, Kate Bush, Ryan Adams and Bessie Smith. The one thing that doesn't change is Fran's strong Yorkshire accent, of which she is "fiercely, but ridiculously, proud!" Now a second-year student on the Newcastle Folk Degree, Fran has already performed several times at The Sage Gateshead, including participating in the recent "Euro Folk Stars of the Future" project. She is currently in the process of recording some long-awaited solo material - some of which will definitely be aired at this very concert... just for you!

LUCY FARRELL & JONNY KEARNEY
(www.myspace.com/lucyfarrell)

Lucy and Jonny are both singers with great presence, sensitivity and character. Now in their second year on the Newcastle Folk Degree, this Maidstone/Hexham duo have combined their talents to create a sound full of warmth, intimacy, and eccentricity, with Jonny's idiosyncratic and observant songwriting attracting the attention and admiration of his tutors and audiences alike. Lucy is acknowledged for her beautiful singing voice, and has lately performed at The Sage Gateshead and The Bridge Hotel amongst other venues, whilst Jonny has impressed the crowds at the Egypt Cottage in Byker this year. Both musicians are accomplished guitarists, and they use their very different voices to great effect, with Lucy's direct and effortless singing style complementing Jonny's softer, more intimate vocals... Dylan and Baez had nothing on this pair!

ROSIE COGGLE AND TOM CRONIN

This lively fiddle and guitar duo are sure to provide "Summer Folk" with a dazzling opening set of vibrant, funky tunes. Rosie and Tom are both on the first year of the Newcastle Folk Degree, and recently played a fantastic opening set at the Alnwick Theatre as part of a concert involving all the first-year degree students, much to the delight of the audience there. Usually found playing as a trio, with harmonica player and singer Dave Hart, tonight Rosie and Tom will go it alone in style, and get "Summer Folk" off to a fiery start!

HOSTS - ADAM AND ALEX, of the Adam & Alex Show

Adam and Alex are music students at Durham University. They also happen to be the presenters of the most popular show on Durham University's Purple Radio! Student listeners across the North East and beyond log on to www.purple.dsu.org.uk every Saturday and Sunday, 3 til 5, to hear the berserk and hilarious musings of Adam and Alex in features such as fantastically funny spoofs on TV's "The Day Today" and the M&S 'Albatross' adverts, "Dave's Random Fact" where they inform us of their weekly useless piece of trivia, and everybody's favourite, "Neighbours Corner", where they ponder the latest on-goings in Ramsay Street – this is perfect student listening! Adam and Alex manage to maintain that great balance of music and chat that so many other shows get wrong, and insist on playing a wide variety of popular music, chart music and otherwise. Who better to introduce tonight's wonderful musicians than these two…?

Hi brucemoll - Yes there's some amazing talent on the course - having organised the concert I can honestly say that the most relieving thing is being able to have total faith in everyone performing at it, they're such a great bunch of musicians! I saw the headline act, Celtic Thunder, fill a whole nightclub Monday night and win over a largely non=-folk audience because their tunes are so driving and catchy - everyone was up on their feet and dancing. I challenge you NOT to enjoy their performance!!

It's not only students - the wonderful singer Sandra Kerr is bringing her highly acclaimed women's choir "Werca's Folk" down from Northumbria to treat us to some beautiful songs. They perform both traditional and contemporary folk songs, arranged by Sandra herself.

Plans are going great, thanks - we've been featured on several local radio stations, including "Northern Folk" - the show presented by Alistair Anderson - and in various local newspapers, as well as getting a great reception from both the Newcastle folk scene and many national online message-boards. I've even had word that students from the Glasgow RSAMD course will be down to support us!

However, there's no guarantee of crowd size because there's no advanced ticket sales, so I still really need people to turn out to support this great cause! DEFINITELY worth a trip up North, brucemoll!!
