Playing through some abc files created by the late Bruce Olson, I came across one called Largolee, apparently published in 1772. This seems to me to be the same tune as the one used for Banks of the Dee.

Is this association one which is already known?

I read somewhere that Banks of the Dee was written by John Tait, of Edinburgh, around 1775, adapting the tune from an Irish air called Langolee. Sounds close to what you have dug up. It's a lovely tune - although I think the original Langolee may have been more up tempo than the slower Banks.

I presume Banks of the Dee was a song, then.

So it was, and by John Tait as you say. There are about 20 copies in the Bodleian collection, as well as other songs set to the same tune.

And that information is already in the DT!
