Subject: Cohen/Buckley: Hallelujah lyrics author? From: Peter T. Date: 16 Jul 03 - 04:08 PM The Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah" has been getting a lot of new play since Shrek (Rufus Wainwright's version). John Cale, Jeff Buckley, are others known to sing it. Is there someone out there who can untangle who wrote which lyrics, since they all appear to be different, new verses, etc. Are all the versions using lyrics by Leonard Cohen, or did people like Jeff Buckley make up new ones? Cohen only sings 4 verses (The ones in the DT) on his original recording. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Cohen/Buckley: Hallelujah lyrics author? From: Leo Condie Date: 16 Jul 03 - 07:43 PM Cohen wrote more verses than are in the studio version. There are different verses (as heard in the Buckley version) in the recording on the Cohen Live album. leo. |

Subject: RE: Cohen/Buckley: Hallelujah lyrics author? From: rangeroger Date: 16 Jul 03 - 11:20 PM Peter, Leo's got it. Cohen wrote and recorded the song with the different lyrics on two separate albums. BTW, it is John Cale's version in the movie. Rufus Wainright only did the soundtrack album. I got the Jeff Buckley CD "Grace" after listening to Cheryl Crow's version of the song on "Sessions at W 54th" rr |

Subject: Lyr Add: HALLELUJAH (Cohen + Buckley) From: Peter T. Date: 31 Jul 03 - 05:16 PM There are various versions of this floating around, which is somewhat confusing. Leonard Cohen has at least two versions, one from Various Positions, and one from his Live Album. They were spliced together (it seems) by Jeff Buckley for his fine version on his Grace album. Below I have copied the original version, with Buckley's additions -- which he took from the Live album -- in "[]" brackets. His slight changes to Cohen's originals are signalled by the "<>" brackets enclosing Cohen's originals. Beginning with "You say you took the name in vain" the rest of the song is extra verses from both Cohen versions, changes from the first to the second signalled by parentheses "()" for the first version. Cohen, for some bizarre reason, dropped the first two verses (the best) for his Live album. Whew. yours, Peter T. Hallelujah Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this -- the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing "Hallelujah". Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong, but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Baby, I've been here before, I know this room, I've walked this floor, I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch, But love is not a victory march, It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [There was a time you let me know What's really going on below but now you never show it to me, do you? But remember when I moved in you, And the holy dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was Hallelujah] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Now maybe there's a God above but all I ever learned from love Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you -- And its not a cry Its not somebody It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah] You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light in every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I (tried) learned to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you -- And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my (tongue) lips but Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah - Cohen/Buckley versions From: Anonny Mouse Date: 20 Jun 06 - 03:12 PM Try Rufus Wainwright's version of this, which is on the Soundtrack of "Shrek" but done by somebody else for the movie. Rufus and Jeff Buckly were friends. Jeff, sadly, basically killed himself. Sad. Actually, for any of you who haven't been "turned on" to Rufus, search him out, download MP3's whatever. He is a VERY talented man with a family of musicians behind him (Louden Wainwright/Martha McGarrigal). Two songs that absolutely Blow ME AWAY: "Beautiful Child" (about 9/11) and "I Don't Know What It Is." Rufus really cared for Buckly, and was grief stricken over his death. Meanwhile, Rufus has been carving little-by-little a niche in music/recordings. Maybe a bit "unknown." I have seen him twice live and in concert--once from a front-row view. He is killer. Plays piano and a couple of Martin/Gibson big ol' gits. Check him out, is the best advice I can give. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah - Cohen/Buckley versions From: GUEST Date: 21 Jun 06 - 10:51 AM There is a new film out about Cohen - reviewed today June 21 on Salon.com. Great film apparently - they were not so hot on the Rufus version of Hallelujah in it. But other stuff by him was fine, in their opinion. Patricia O'Callaghan has it on her Slow Fox CD - as well as the song Take This Waltz. |

Subject: RE: Cohen/Buckley: Hallelujah lyrics author? From: LeTenebreux Date: 13 Oct 07 - 05:05 PM Some of the lyrics are kinda graphic, I think: There was a time you'd let me know What's real and going on below But now you never show it to me, do ya? K.D. Lang, Rufus Wainwright, and Jeff Buckley have all covered it. It's a very catchy tune. I think it's fair to say it's achieved some sort of folk status. I guess. I dunno. |

Subject: Lyr Add: HALLELUJAH (Leonard Cohen) From: Dave Sutherland Date: 14 Oct 07 - 02:21 PM The two versions from the two particular Cohen albums - hope that this helps. HALLELUJAH From “Various Positions” Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord, But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift; The baffled king composing Hallelujah! Your faith was strong but you needed proof. You saw her bathing on the roof; Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you. She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, she cut your hair, And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah! You say I took the Name in vain; I don't even know the name. But if I did, well, really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light in every word; It doesn't matter which you heard; The holy, or the broken Hallelujah! I did my best; it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch. Copyright © 1988 by Leonard Cohen and Sony/ATV Music Publishing Canada Company From “Cohen Live” and “More Best of Leonard Cohen”: Baby, I've been here before. I know this room, I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch, But listen, love is not some kind of victory march, It’s cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah! There was a time you let me know What’s really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? I remember when I moved in you, And the holy dove she was moving too, And every single breath we drew was Hallelujah! Now maybe there's a God above But as for me all I ever seem to learn from love Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you. And it's not a complaint you'll hear tonight, It’s not the laughter of someone Who claims to have seen the light -- It’s a cold and it's a lonely Hallelujah! I did my best; it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch. I've told the truth, I didn't come all this way to fool you. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand right here before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah!
