Date: 16 Jul 03 - 04:08 PM The Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah" has been getting a lot of new play since Shrek (Rufus Wainwright's version). John Cale, Jeff Buckley, are others known to sing it. Is there someone out there who can untangle who wrote which lyrics, since they all appear to be different, new verses, etc. Are all the versions using lyrics by Leonard Cohen, or did people like Jeff Buckley make up new ones? Cohen only sings 4 verses (The ones in the DT) on his original recording. yours, Peter T. |

Cohen wrote and recorded the song with the different lyrics on two separate albums. BTW, it is John Cale's version in the movie. Rufus Wainright only did the soundtrack album. Leonard Cohen has at least two versions, one from Various Positions, and one from his Live Album. They were spliced together (it seems) by Jeff Buckley for his fine version on his Grace album. Below I have copied the original version, with Buckley's additions -- which he took from the Live album -- in "[]" brackets. His slight changes to Cohen's originals are signalled by the "<>" brackets enclosing Cohen's originals. Beginning with "You say you took the name in vain" the rest of the song is extra verses from both Cohen versions, changes from the first to the second signalled by parentheses "()" for the first version. Cohen, for some bizarre reason, dropped the first two verses (the best) for his Live album. Whew. yours, Peter T. Rufus and Jeff Buckly were friends. Jeff, sadly, basically killed himself. Sad. Actually, for any of you who haven't been "turned on" to Rufus, search him out, download MP3's whatever. He is a VERY talented man with a family of musicians behind him (Louden Wainwright/Martha McGarrigal). Two songs that absolutely Blow ME AWAY: "Beautiful Child" (about 9/11) and "I Don't Know What It Is." Rufus really cared for Buckly, and was grief stricken over his death. Meanwhile, Rufus has been carving little-by-little a niche in music/recordings. Maybe a bit "unknown." I have seen him twice live and in concert--once from a front-row view. He is killer. Plays piano and a couple of Martin/Gibson big ol' gits. Check him out, is the best advice I can give. |

Great film apparently - they were not so hot on the Rufus version of Hallelujah in it. But other stuff by him was fine, in their opinion. Patricia O'Callaghan has it on her Slow Fox CD - as well as the song Take This Waltz. |

K.D. Lang, Rufus Wainwright, and Jeff Buckley have all covered it. It's a very catchy tune. I think it's fair to say it's achieved some sort of folk status. I guess. I dunno. |
