Subject: lancashire folk From: GUEST,stevethesqueeze Date: 20 May 03 - 02:46 PM hello friends you probably all know this but does anyone know a good site or source for the the music and lyrics of Lancashire folk songs. I have one or two battered old books but nothing really useful. I guess sources of Lancashire dance tumes may also be interesting. stevethesqueeze |

Subject: RE: lancashire folk From: Tinkercat Date: 20 May 03 - 03:00 PM Hi Steve, the only thing I found in my songbook collection is something you probably got yourself. It's called Folk Songs and Ballads of Lancashire, compiled and edited by Harry and Lesley Boardman, copyright 1973, Oak Publications. It may be out of print, I got it in the mid-70s when I was living in Lancaster. There was also a guy at the Lancaster Folkclub who recorded Lancashire songs, his name's Mike Lyddiard. I don't know whether he brought out more than the one record I once bought at a folkclub session in the 70s. Sorry to have only such dated information. |

Subject: RE: lancashire folk From: greg stephens Date: 20 May 03 - 03:11 PM Where do you live, Steve the Squeeze? The best source for Lancashire dance tunes is probably the stack of notebooks and publications on my book shelves(also on the piano and scattered round the house). The Village Music Project (type that into any search thingy and you'll find it) will let you access such collections as the Kershaw manuscript. Harry Boardman (book and records) will certainly get you in the right place to start looking at Lancashire songs. For the true spirit of Lancashire, may I recommend two songs which stand out in my mind: The Rawtenstall Annual Fair and Little Sammy Shuttleworth. Now if you'ld been at the Plough in Galgate in 1969 you could have asked me and Harry Boardman in person...alas he's not with us, but I am(touch wood). |
