Subject: Rec. for good cd of Eng. 1600s ballads? From: ooh-aah Date: 08 May 03 - 07:55 AM I've recently become interested in songs from the 1600s, which are generally a bit too old to have entered the 'folk' repertiore. I'm especially interested in songs of the English civil war, such as 'The King Shall Enjoy His Own Again'. The ideal Cd for me would have authentic instruments, clear singing (I've got plently of purely instrumental music of the preiod) and the lyrics included! Any recommendations? |

Subject: RE: Rec. for good cd of Eng. 1600s ballads? From: GUEST,emily b Date: 08 May 03 - 08:56 AM ooh-aah, You might check out Baltimore Consort. They're an early music group who play with period instruments. Custer LaRue is their fabulous singer. She has her own ballads recordings too. Find them at www.baltcons.com. I don't know if the content is what you want but the time period is appropriate. Other early music groups would probably be appropriate but I can't recommend other names because I don't know them. Good luck with your search and have fun. Emily |

Mine is a 2-vol. edition (the contents are the same) released in 1989 in Japan, and it contains lyrics. If there should be no lyrics, these sites may help. The Sealed Knot Society - The English Civil War - Sir John Owen Cavalier Songs & Ballads of England Other CDs which contain "When The King Enjoys His Own Again" are: English National Songs (Saydisc) Drum & Fife Through History (Bandleader) ~Masato |
