Subject: Help! Need title for radio show From: GUEST,Al Date: 04 May 03 - 02:40 AM I've put in for a 2 hour slot to broadcast on KFOK-LPFM in Georgetown, California. It will be mostly old-time and traditional, with a sprinkling of contemporary artists doing old style tunes. Also, some odd stuff, like Jose Feliciano singing the first stylized version of the national anthem at the world series back in the late sixties or so. Maybe some Joseph Spence. Anyway, the committee that decides who gets a spot is meeting Monday night, and they need a title for the show. I plan on alternating the time slot with one or two other people, so I can't just use my name for the title. Any ideas? Thanks, Al |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: open mike Date: 04 May 03 - 03:40 AM sounds like a similar predicament that i am in. a 2 hour folk show on an new fm staion in oroville, ca. alternating with several other programmers. i brainstormed for a show name and found dozens. I suggest using something that has a local appeal, historical perhaps. humorous? what is the folk society there called? Bruce and Cindy Hayden have an association which produces concerts, etc. Q note productions, correct? and american river folk society may be the name of the association whcih produces concerts in the area, and was influential in starting the station too. maybe something that commemorates a river, mountain, mine or other natural or historical place in your area? interesting that FOK is in the radio station name...could you do something with the name that can still be said over the radio??!! as Thom O'Hair (the founder fo the strawberry music fest radio station) always said Fight For Free Radio (FFFR) perhaps Radio Free Georgetown or Radio Free something else would fit? Is there anything about the location of the station that might be of interest? street name? building name? what is the elevation of your area? good luck and let us know what you choose! do you know who your alternating porgrammers are? they might like to have input. my radio name is common "tater--what's yours? |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 May 03 - 04:19 AM Or you could pick a song or tune that you like and use the title or a line from it. Something like "Wildwood Flower", "Over the Waterfall", or "Hawks and Eagles"? Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: GUEST,Geoff Date: 04 May 03 - 10:17 AM It all rather depends on just how tight your definition of folk is. If broad then might I sugesst what I suggested to a programme controller 20 years ago "Horsemusic".He wasn't impressed but to this day I remain convinced that it was a goodun. But i'm still not sure whether it was Louis or Leadbelly who asked for a definition of his music said "Well,I aint heard a horse sing" Good luck with your programme |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: open mike Date: 04 May 03 - 02:57 PM there is a band in northern california named hawks and eagles it would be best not to use their name for your show. Robbie Osmond on KPFA named his show after Kate wolf's song Across the Great Divide--that was a good name!@! is there a pass near you in the high sierras? donner summit? well the donner party may not be appetizing....dodge ridge?? a geographical name from your area? |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: Walking Eagle Date: 04 May 03 - 07:50 PM I'm kind of partial to The sixth and one half fret. I know it's a mouthful, but it refers to the sixth and one half fret on some dulcimers. I always thought I would name my folk music store that, if I ever got one. Or The Fifth String as it refers to the banjo. I also agree with something of local renown or the title of a song. I like Shenandoah for instance. |

Subject: RE: Help! Need title for radio show From: GUEST,Al Date: 05 May 03 - 03:08 AM Well, I submitted my application tonight. I told them the show would be named "Pride of the Mountains", after the title of a historical book about Georgetown. I also said, "or maybe Radio Free Georgetown". Thank you one and all. If I get the program, and you have CD's of your music, I'd be pleased to play it. Al |
