Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: Dave Bryant Date: 06 May 03 - 05:51 AM I went to the very first show they ever did there. It was a freebie in the 60s for people who'd been on the CND Easter march. It was a pretty good show with both "Pink Floyd" and "The Move", plus Joan Baez, and MacColl/Seeger. I went there several other times, mainly for bands like "Floyd" and "Cream", but I do remember a folk concert for "The Friends of Simon" a charity which helped homeless and especially the meths drinkers of that period. I can remember "Young Tradition" being on the bill. Up to about '67 I was only living up the hill at Belsize Park, and my regular folk club was "The Enterprise" just over the road from the Roundhouse. I have several friends who are railway enthusiasts, who think it should be converted back to the engine shed that it once was, with the turntable in the centre and all the sidings radiating out, and then used a s arailway museum. |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: GUEST,T-boy Date: 06 May 03 - 07:57 AM I remember the Doors / Jefferson Airplane bash, but I didn't think it was the Roundhouse. Buggered if I can remember where it was though. |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: cockney Date: 06 May 03 - 06:38 PM Yes it was the roundhouse! Blimey Mr Bryant I didn't know you were an old Hippie - join the club! Yes I agree it would be better off as a railway museum - mind you, we could still put a few gigs on there as well!!! I hear that lonesome whisle blowin' ...... |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: David C. Carter Date: 17 Jan 06 - 08:40 AM I used to go to The Roundhouse during the 60s-70s,saw most of the bands already mentioned. We did The Eel Pie Island,Richmond too. At the Roundhouse a friend of mine,Peter Pavli,of High Tide did a set with Michael Moorcock one Sunday.Moorcock played an Ovation guitar, which Pete had at his house.Pete put the reel to reel tape which they were going to use,in the guitar case.Shut the lid and smashed the bridge of the Ovation. They met at the Roundhouse with Pete in a cold sweat.Moorcock said forget it,we'll get another one. They took a stroll towards Chalk Farm, saw a guy sitting on the steps of his flat playing an Ovation!Moorcock said how much do you want for it.Anyway, the guy sold it to him,Moorcock having loadsamoney on him. They went back and did their gig.Anybody heard of High Tide by the way? Cheers |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: woodsie Date: 17 Jan 06 - 07:32 PM Yeah I saw High Tide there. Simon House wasn't it? Brilliant first album - Sea Shanties - definitely not of the folksinger variety though! |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: GUEST,sorefingers Date: 18 Jan 06 - 07:15 PM Now there's a place I had forgotten about! Sometime in the 70's I went to both the 'Island' and 'Roundhouse', there last I recall going to see a loud band called 'Chicken Shack'. The only thing I remember - too wasted I guess - was a guy with one crooked eye looking about as he played blues on the electric guitar, I suppose I was afraid of being set aside for supper because I do remember being a little scared. Eel Pie as I recall ended up being a Hippy Colony and the one time I do recall go through it, the place ponged real bad of waste, ahem. I suppose its all demolished by now. |

Subject: RE: The Roundhouse Chalk Farm From: David C. Carter Date: 19 Jan 06 - 06:06 AM Simon House it was. They did 2 albums. They are now on cd.To get onto the "Island"you had to cross a footbridge, and pay a penny to the two old ladies who used to sit there evey Saturday. The guy at the door would ask"Got any drugs?"When told"Er....no"he'd come back with,"Well I've got Blues,LSD,Grass etc". Happy Daze |
