Subject: Old Sings new to your kids & g.kids? From: wilco Date: 24 Apr 03 - 10:00 AM Last summer, I was plunking around at home, when a group of teenagers, who were visiting my teenage sons, walked through the room. I was swapping back and forth on guitar, banjo, and fiddle. I think the songs were my Playlist: "Long Black Veil," "Blues Stay Away From Me," "I'll Fly Away," Wreck on the Highway," "House of Gold," "Milk Cow Blues," "White Dove," "Black Jack Davey," etc. They listened (and sang some too!!), and then hurridley asked me, "I didn't know you liked Dave Matthews." And, they named some other "Jam bands" who did these songs. They couldn't believe that I knew these songs. They had just heard them at the big Bonaroo (sp?) Festival up the road here. I think this is the "answer" to preserving old traditional music. These kids hear Dave do it, and then they hunt-up the original versions, and see how good the music can be! Has this happened to you too? |

From: katlaughing Date: 24 Apr 03 - 10:14 AM My son and I were talking the other day and he asked if I'd ever heard the "other" version of Waltzing Matilda. I said did he mean The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Yeah, yeah, he said. Then he started telling me about this great band called the Pogues! Hahaha...loved that his mom knew about them and the song. I was thrilled that he did! |

Subject: RE: Old Sings new to your kids & g.kids? From: Pooby Date: 24 Apr 03 - 10:30 AM How true, how true! Just yesterday, my daughter (15) called me up at work with the burning question "Who did the song Drift Away?" She'd heard the band Uncle Kracker do it, but (bless her) knew it wasn't the original, so with my help she tracked down the Dobie Gray version. Kids also get exposure to "old" tunes (admittedly, more pop than folk) from the use of the songs in movies, especially flicks that target their age groups. Can't tell you how many times this has happened. My favorite, though, was about 10 years or so ago, when my then-much-younger daughter, who had heard me and my partner sing CSNY's "Teach Your Children" countless times, heard the original on the car radio and said, innocently but with full conviction, "Hey Dad, they're playing yours and Bob's song." Another father-daughter moment. Poobs |
