I've been attending workshops in which we sing short songs in harmony. The songs come from different cultures and I'm sure our pronunciation of words in various languages rendered in phonetic spellings must be considerably distorted!

One nice song is from Africa, probably Kenya. It begins
"Fan Ban ny ay, fan ban ny ay ny ba ba ..." (etc)

I'd like to hear the real thing. I do have some recordings of music from that part of the world. Can anyone suggest recordings of this particular song?

Any information about what the words mean and where/when the song would be traditionally sung would be of great interest also.

Our instructor, Karen Henry, got a lot of her material from Frankie Armstrong (directly and indirectly), if that's any help in locating further information.

Karen says it is Kenyan and is a funeral song, sung very cheerfully.

Who can tell us more?

African music, and esp. e. African doesn't feature much in Mudcat. But I hope someone takes an interest in this request

I am interested, just don't know much. I did find a couple of things which are interesting looking: Why Kenyan Music Dominates, and

Kenyan music.

Hope we can find some more.

Thanks,

kat

Hi Phillipa

I am interested in African music. I spent a month in Kenya 4 months or so ago. I learnt the african guitar while I was there and became part of the Sengwer Tribe. It was a truly amazing experience. I have many frends in Africa now.

I'm afraid I have difficulty recognising the song with out a tune though!

Asanti, Sam

The words we sing are

Fan Ban ny ay, fan ban ny-ay ny ba ba
Fan ban ny ay, fan ban ny-ay ny ba ba

Teena tenda, teena tenda ny ba ba (x2)

Moonay roo do, moonay roo do ny ba ba (x2)

Maca na ca, maca naca ny ba ba

Fan ban, etc

I don't know what they mean and I imagine we don't pronounce everything as we should. I don't have sheet music.

I found the background I sought for Albanian and Hebridean songs from Karen Henry's workshops. Still seeking Fan Ban ...

I was looking for a thread on African music just so I could advise readers that there are several articles/reviews on the topic at http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/5714.asp

I read review of a recording by a group from Kenya called Abana; the reviewer wasn't too keen on their mixing of African and Celtic music.
but anyway, this gives me an excuse to revive this long unanswered query about Fan Ban Ny Aye
