Bernard, a man after me own heart, and a demon accordion player unless I am mistaken?

Thanks for keeping my thread alive.

But more, the Day of International Dance, Song, culture and such, will be followed by an evening of Music, song, poetry and the sawing in half of live volunteers, not to mention Fire Eating, in Longfords, the Social Club in the Park.

Les, I tried searching Google for information on the dance festival, and I came across a press release for last year's event on Trafford MBC's website: http://www.trafford.gov.uk/news/press/2002/04/celebrating_friends.htm

There doesn't seem to be one for this year yet, but presumably the contact numbers will still be the same if people want to enquire? Last year's guest lineup looks pretty impressive, too - if there's the same quality for this year, it should be a good do!

I'll add it to the Folkal Point list of Festivals (the Cricket Club's already in the main diary section).

Joan

Joan,
thanks for the research! I have only recently become involved, so I cannot be sure of the details. The event is the daughter of so to speak, with a really interesting collection of Dancers, singers, musicians, artists, crafts people and all for the price of dragging oneself through the gate of Longford Park!

An Evening Do is included this year in Longfords, the Club in the Park. It has a bar and the Do will be run by Jozeph Roberts and others from the Chorlton Folk Club.

Who knows, even Bernard the demon accordianist might give us a turn.
Cheers
Les

This is all good news folks. The International Festival is a 1. 00 - 6. 00 sort of do with 2 stages and people all over the Park. Some clog, some rapper, Cotswold then a range of Asian and African Dabcers. Singers equally as many and varied. A variety of art/craft and performance workshops but so far nobody has mentioned face painting!

Last year thousands came. Fingers crossed for the sunshine. The Evening do is an addition. Fronted by Jozeph and others from Chorlton Folk Club (which meets on Thursdays at South West Manchester Cricket Club, Ellesmere Road, Chorlton).

Chorlton Folk Club meets every Thursday at Southwest Manchester Cricket Club, Ellesmere Road, Chorlton. Lead by the one and only Jozeph Roberts. Floor singers guaranteed a spot.

The 27 october Oxjam at the Lloyds is not really connected except that some us involved often sing at the Folk Club.

And, in answer to Ray, yes the same Mike Billington was in Rebec, plays in The Madcap ceilidh Band who are a bit good.

And of course, there'll be 'Dulcimer' in what used to be Quarmbys, which threatens to feature lots of live folk and acoustic music when it finally opens.

Is Chorlton folk club worth trying, Les? I was led to believe it was all maudlin singer songwriters with rubbish relationships - and the odd person doing Morrissey on an acoustic guitar... have I been cruelly misled? Is there ever any traditional or tradition(ish) music?

Cheers

Nigel

So Quarmby's stationery shop is dead? ( It is at least 5 years since I was in Chorlton, so I am well behind the times.) Who will be running the folk sessions there?
Sounds to me like Chorlton is becoming the new folk music centre of Manchester. I really must drop in when I am passing to see what it is all about.

Thanks Les - I seem to remember he had a folk column in the m/c evening news for a time - but that was also years ago. I don't think I've been to Chorlton since they extended to motorway to Stockport and the lat time I remember playing there was on bass drum with a brass band in the carnival! A bit remote from my usual instruments but the fiddler I was playing with at the time was their m.d.

The Folk Club does attract a disproportionate number of singer-songwriters many of which do have the class of McColl, Thompson or well pretty well anyone else. I try to sing tard songs and play tunes but I have to say something odd and amazing does happen from time to time but it is not often a folk song.

Dulcimer looks like a great place and may have good beer but I suspect it will be lots of open mike singer-songwriter before you hear Sweet Primroses or a shanty, but who knows.

Mike B did run an excellent radio prog on GMR butit was reorganised out of existance.

See you all on the 27th?

Cheers

I sometimes feel an informal singaround in some small pub room in Chorlton coming on - what do you think? Could we collect a dozen or so who might sing some old songs and join in each others choruses?

Hi Ray

It is I; Mike Billington. Nice to see someone remembers me. I did in fact play with Rebec. Bob Cross, who wrote the material, now lives in New Zealand but is interested to record a CD when he is over here some time so watch this space. I did in fact drop in to the Deanwater and played regularly at Poynton as well. Ah, heady days! As Les says, I currently play in MADCAP, a ceilidh band of nearly 25 years standing. We are doing a ceilidh in Chorlton at the Irish Club on Sat 1st December as a fund raiser and memorial to an ex-member, John Snelson. Hope all who knew John can make it and also those who did not.
I also danced with Les in Gorton Morris Men, ran clubs at the Briton's Protection in Manchester and the Seymour in Chorlton, helped run The Manchester Folk Guide and presented and produced the folk programme on BBC Radio Manchester from 1984-1989. I seem now to be in semi-retirement but in addition to MADCAP I play in a foursome with Les called The Ghyll Head Band. See us at The LLoyd as part of the Oxjam thing!

Mike Billington

I am sure you are right Vin, one problem is do people want to travel into the middle of town to a folk club and will they do it often enough to sustain a club.

My feeling about Chorlton, where I live, is that enough people who have an interest in folk, live in walking distance to Chorlton. This is born out by 5 years of Chorlton Folk Club. I think some kind of small singers club could also be sustained where we could sing old songs and sing each others choruses. Perhaps once a month is a reasonable target?

But first a room

Hi Mike
I seem to have been in semi retirement for years! We actually started the club at the Deanwater in 1974 after resigning from the residency at Poynton. We ran it until Geoff Walt (wonder where he is now) took it over. I continued running the sound for him and branched out into sound for bands, shows and festivals. I haven't done that for years and nowadays I mainly play for my own amusement occasionally sitting in with the odd band.

I remember playing at the Seymour although how long ago and why I can't remember. It sticks in my mind 'cos I remember running into Mike "Matchstalk Men" Coleman in the gents who had just finished playing a summer season in Blackpool.

Goff Walt also ran the Heaton Moor Rugby Club Folk Club, another good club. Don't know where he is now; if yo are out there Goff log in! I do remember Mike Coleman came to the club occasionally; a really nice bloke.

Once a month sounds spot on Les. The monthly sings I visit are generally lively with great songs and singing with a minimum of instruments. If they were weekly I doubt if they would have survived.

As importantly I feel Chorlton is a good location for a singer's night in view of it's catchment area.Looking forward to the opening night :0)

Hi again Mike - entirely forgot this thread - if at all, you would probably remember me sat on the sound desk at the back of the room! Didn't play there that often.

Geoff ran the club at the Heaton Moor Rugby Club before taking over the Deanwater venue from Ian Stuart (now I believe deceased). Thereafter he moved the venue to the Belfry in Handforth before retiring to open a restaurant in Bude. We're talking nearly 30 years ago here.

Geoff certainly managed to persuade some big names to perform, Ralph MacTell, Jasper Carrott and Gorden Giltrap to name but two!

I've not heard from him in years.

Hi Les,

What memories were stirred up by this thread! We used to attend nearly all those places mentioned - heady days when we were spoilt for choice as to which club to go to! I actually met Bob (8 pints) at the MSG and our first date was Poynton! I used to live about 25yds from the Seymour so were regulars there. Mind you, I was too timid to sing in those days - that seems a long time ago!

Hope to make it on Saturday and we are definitely up for a regular singaround. We haven't really found anything since the Ducie sessions came to an end when the Pub was refurbished.

See you then, Sue vG
