Does anyone know the chords and lyrics for The Ballad of William Sycamore as done by Tom Russell? I have looked high and low and have found numerous sources for the poem, but alas no chords. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Ron

Ron

I can't help with the chords. As for the lyrics, I haven't heard Tom Russell do it, but I'm willing to bet that he used Steve Young's version, particularly given that he has worked and co-written with Young. Steve Young originally recorded it on his classic 1971 'Seven Bridges Road' album which, unfortunately, has yet to make it to CD. The poem is by Stephen Vincent Benet. Young shortened the poem and wrote the music for it. A live version by Young {but I don't reckon it is as good as the 'Seven Bridges rendition) made it to CD: Steve Young 'Solo/Live' - I have this on Demon Records under licence to Watermelon Records [1991]. There is no lyric sheet with the LP or the CD. You should be able to dig up a copy of the poem.

As it turns out, I do have Tom's rendition - I had forgotten all about it. It is on his 'Song of the West: The Cowboy Collection' CD HMG 2501 [1997]. This has a lyric sheet for the Russell penned songs, but not for this song. I was correct in my surmise about its genesis with Young. The Russell album insert has a note: 'A poem by Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) edited down and adapted into a song by Steve Young ...'

I found the poem on the Net:

Hopefully, someone will come up with the chords in due course.

Stewie,
Thanks for all the help. I really like Tom Russell's version and I can pull the lyrics from an mp3 that I have and hopefully someone can help out with the chords. A promoter friend tells me that Steve Young will be heading down to Florida in May to appear at The Gamble Rodgers Festival, so maybe I can pick them up by watching him if he still does the song. Thanks again, man.
Ron
