Subject: 'Songster & Saints' - the album? From: outfidel Date: 16 Feb 03 - 11:20 AM A few days ago, I asked Mudcatters for reading material on pre-blues music and musicians. Several people recommended Paul Oliver's book, "Songsters & Saints: Vocal Traditions on Race Records". In doing a little web surfing for the book, I found a CD on All-Music Guide by the same name (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=9:40:47|PM&sql=A7c8j1vjozzba). Does the book come with the CD? If not, do folks here recommend the CD, and where is it available? |

The album on your link relates to the first of 2 double-LP sets that were issued by Matchbox to complement the book. These were compiled and annotated by Paul Oliver. I wasn't aware that either had made it to CD - it must be a double CD to have 36 tracks. Each double-LP set had 36 tracks. It is odd that I cannot find reference to this CD elsewhere than where you have linked. I don't buy stuff online. If you find out where it is available, please let me know as I would certainly like to have these tracks on CD. --Stewie. |

Neither Amazon.com or CDUniverses have the album. All Music Guide is what it says... a guide... not a source for purchase. They also write reviews on vinyl albums, so I don't know whether this has been released on CD.. if it has been, I'd like to know where to buy it. Maybe I'll check eBay under records, and see if they have any copies.. I'll let you know if I run across anything.. Jerry |

I have a few of the tracks on other CDs or vinyl, but it looks like a great collection. I'd buy it just to get another track by Roosevelt Graves and Brother. I've only seen two of his songs re-issued anywhere.. Jerry |
