Subject: RE: Lyr Req: SWEET NOLA SHANNON From: masato sakurai Date: 11 Feb 03 - 11:03 AM No luck with score or lyrics, but it was written by W.R. Williams in 1895, was recorded by W.L. 'Rustic' Waters in 1931 as "Sweet Nora Shannon," and is contained in Old Time Songs and Poems, III, #4, 11; IV, #2, 27 (According to Meade et al.'s Country Music Sources, p, 234). ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: SWEET NOLA SHANNON From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 11 Feb 03 - 11:04 AM Seems to be a real song. Found mention at: http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/m/Meade,Guthrie_T.html
Haven't found the actual lyrics. It's probably early 20th or late 19th century. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: SWEET NOLA SHANNON From: GUEST, Dale Date: 11 Feb 03 - 04:59 PM WELL, I am amazed that anyone would ask for this. As it happens, I KNOW the words, and will get to them later. Just bought a recording of the song about an hour ago. No kidding. Later. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: SWEET NOLA SHANNON From: GUEST, Dale Date: 11 Feb 03 - 05:14 PM It is not on CD, only on a cassette tape of local Arkansas musicians. I had heard this fellow do it on the recordings of the live shows from the Ozark Folk Center, and have been tracking down all I could find on it. I knew he had recorded it with a group he was with back in the 80s. Our folklorist says that his is the only recording known other than the W. L. Rustic Waters version mentioned by Masato. I have not even played the tape yet, but I pretty much know what to expect, since it comes from the same time frame as the version I heard earlier. Like I said, later ~~ and glad to do it. |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET NOLA SHANNON From: GUEST, Dale Date: 11 Feb 03 - 05:23 PM This is what I had already transcribed from Bob's live version. I will check the tape I bought today at a later time. Sweet Nola Shannon written by W. P. Williams and published by Will Rossiter in 1897 (apparently a reprint of the 1895 sheetmusic) In a shady dell, down by a flowing stream Dwells sweet Nola Shannon, she's nature's queen All the boys and girls around the neighborhood Fall in love with Nola, just because she's good Sweet Nola Shannon, Nola Shannon adore Each time I see her, I love her more Bright as the sunshine, she is the girl I prefer She loves me truly, and I do love her Every Sunday eve, at the hour of eight Nola comes to greet me, at the garden gate Arm in arm we stroll, through the shady dell Twinkling stars may watch two kiss, but never tell |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Nola Shannon From: Arkie Date: 14 Mar 08 - 06:19 PM Joe, thought I had an MP3 on my computer but did not find it. I think I can get one though and send to anyone who could write out a lead sheet. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Nola Shannon From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Mar 08 - 01:15 PM For what it's worth, the New York Public Library has online images of the cover and the first page of the sheet music of SWEET NOLA SHANNON. The only lyrics I can read are these: 1. In a shady dell by a flowing stream,… 2. Ev'ry Sunday night at the hour of eight,… At least, it confirms that the author is W. R. Williams and the copyright date is 1897. There is an interesting note at the bottom of the cover: "Supplement of the St. Louis Star Sunday Sept 17th 1899 pages 5-8." Did newspapers once include sheet music? I didn't know that. If it was printed on newsprint, that would explain why it hasn't held up well, and not many copies have survived. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Nola Shannon From: GUEST,Paula Date: 21 Nov 12 - 10:37 PM Excited to see this thread. I learned this song from my Grandmother, who was born in Texas in, I think, about 1890, she said she learned it from her aunt. Never saw it any place, but the words she taught me match those above, except my grandma sang the first line of the chorus "Sweet Nola Shannon, I know all the Shannons adore." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Nola Shannon From: GUEST,999 Date: 21 Nov 12 - 11:17 PM "W.R. Williams (1867-1954), better known as sheet music and vaudeville sketch publisher Will Rossiter, composed vaudeville and patriotic songs between 1894 and 1926. In the Rotarian magazine article I found, they credit Williams with inventing the practice of 'plugging', or using stage performance as a way to promote/sell sheet music." from http://blog.dinosaurdiscs.com/ |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET NOLA SHANNON (W.R. Williams) From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Nov 12 - 12:49 AM The New York Public Library now has all the pages of the sheet music online, but I had to use some legerdemain to find it. SWEET NOLA SHANNON (W. R. Williams) In a shady dell, by a flowing stream, Dwells sweet Nola Shannon, she is nature's queen All the girls and boys around the neighborhood Are in love with Nola, just because she's good. CHORUS Sweet Nola Shannon, Nola Shannon asthore, Each day I see you, I love you more; Bright as the sunshine, she's the girl I prefer, She loves me dearly, and I do love her. Every Sunday night, at the hour of eight, Nola comes to meet me at the garden gate; Arm in arm we stroll all through the shady dell, Twinkling stars can watch us kiss, but never tell.

Subject: RE: req/ADD: Sweet Nola Shannon From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Nov 12 - 06:11 PM A couple of corrections: 1. The songwriter is W. R. Williams, not W. P. 2. The line in the chorus is written as: Each day I see you, I love you more; However, the shift from "she/her" to "you" is annoying, so if I were going to sing this, I would sing: Each day I see her, I love her more; |
