'Rustic' Waters in 1931 as "Sweet Nora Shannon," and is contained in Old Time Songs and Poems, III, #4, 11; IV, #2, 27 (According to Meade et al.'s Country Music Sources, p, 234). ~Masato |

I had heard this fellow do it on the recordings of the live shows from the Ozark Folk Center, and have been tracking down all I could find on it. I knew he had recorded it with a group he was with back in the 80s. Our folklorist says that his is the only recording known other than the W. L. Rustic Waters version mentioned by Masato. I have not even played the tape yet, but I pretty much know what to expect, since it comes from the same time frame as the version I heard earlier. Like I said, later ~~ and glad to do it. |

The only lyrics I can read are these: 1. In a shady dell by a flowing stream,… 2. Ev'ry Sunday night at the hour of eight,… At least, it confirms that the author is W. R. Williams and the copyright date is 1897. There is an interesting note at the bottom of the cover: "Supplement of the St. Louis Star Sunday Sept 17th 1899 pages 5-8." Did newspapers once include sheet music? I didn't know that. If it was printed on newsprint, that would explain why it hasn't held up well, and not many copies have survived. |

I learned this song from my Grandmother, who was born in Texas in, I think, about 1890, she said she learned it from her aunt. Never saw it any place, but the words she taught me match those above, except my grandma sang the first line of the chorus "Sweet Nola Shannon, I know all the Shannons adore." |
