Subject: Tech: Virus? Hoax or Real? From: Sorcha Date: 05 Feb 03 - 02:32 PM Rec'd this from my brother--anybody know anything about it? I post it here because it is aimed at the No War people. ALLCON: FYI. New virus. The Iraq thing may cause you to want to participate. Don't. -----Original Message----- From: IM-SECURITY Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 3:46 PM To: Virus Updates Subject: New Chain Letter Spreading on the Internet Importance: High There is a new chain letter spreading rapidly on the Internet. This chain letter is requesting that recipients who want to speak out against a possible war with Iraq send an e-mail to the United Nations. Users that receive this message should delete it immediately, without forwarding it. These e-mails can be used to gather information on government personnel such as e-mail addresses and phone numbers. In addition, using the ARMY's network to send chain letters is a violation of the Joint Ethics regulation for DA Civilians and a UCMJ violation for ARMY personnel. It is also a violation of the Government Furnished Equipment Clause for contractors, which is written into all government contracts. The chain letter has the following characteristics: Subject: war with iraq Body: If you want to speak against it, the UN is collecting signatures to work against this tragic event. Please do COPY this e-mail to a new mail, sign it at the end of the attached list and send it to all the people you know. If you've received a list with more than 500 signatures, please send another copy to the United Nations: e-mail address If you receive this e-mail delete it immediately. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Virus? Hoax or Real? From: open mike Date: 05 Feb 03 - 03:41 PM well i had a very wierd thing happen when i signed the petition from move on dot org. although i went it to only 8 people, 4 friends and 4 relatives, i got replies for weeks after from fire chiefs, and other co-workers, with whom i would never share my political position with, saying to take me off the e-mail list, etc. I am a fire fighter, and do have some of these fire officers in my address book, but certainly did not send them the petition. Of course i had to add my own 2 cents to the origianl wording of the petition (which basically said "let the inspections work") and i said something like "dear prez: you are in the white house not by popular demand but by a fluke, so watch what you do because it effects the future of the whole world." geesh, now all the fire dept. muckity mucks think i am politically incorrect, and so for 12 years while working with them i have not made my views known, which has involved quite a bit of lip biting...i don't know how this happened unless there was an infected mesage somewhere in my system. my out box does not show it being sent to any more that the 8 people i originally addressed it to....so shit happens...Laurel |

Subject: RE: Tech: Virus? Hoax or Real? From: Burke Date: 05 Feb 03 - 04:04 PM Which message are you wondering about? The petition is useless. Here's a link to the Snopes information. The other message may have originated within the Army's network & not have been intended for general distribution. I'm not sure about the rest of the claims but I can believe using the ARMY's network to send chain letters is a violation of the Joint Ethics regulation for DA Civilians and a UCMJ violation for ARMY personnel. It is also a violation of the Government Furnished Equipment Clause for contractors, which is written into all government contracts Open mike, you kept getting messages because the people you sent it to sent it on to others with your address still on it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Virus? Hoax or Real? From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Feb 03 - 05:55 PM I think that any time you flood anybody with e-mail, you do your cause more harm than good. To a lesser extent, the same goes for phone calls, telegrams, bags of rice, or whatever. Logic can work wonders, but it's really annoying to be flooded with countless copies of the same old thing. You may not agree with them, but most politicians are smart enough to be bored to tears by campaigns that involve endless repetition. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Virus? Hoax or Real? From: Rapparee Date: 06 Feb 03 - 07:06 AM I've found that it's best to check out EVERY "alert" and EVERY chain letter, as there are many, many, many which are hoaxes (and even more which are a plain waste of bandwidth). I use Symantec's antivirus center which has an encyclopedia of both hoaxes and real threats. Datafellows and others run similar sites. |
