Subject: Obit: John Green From: Joan from Wigan Date: 03 Feb 03 - 05:37 AM John Green, another stalwart of the Manchester (UK) folk scene, died last Tuesday, 28th January. He sang unaccompanied and had a vast repertoire of songs, both serious and humorous, and including a fair number of Kipling pieces. He was a former organiser of Droylsden Folk Club and Droylsden Folk Festival, but had suffered ill health recently. He had a heart operation three or four years ago, and we are assuming he had a heart attack. He was found, collapsed, in his house. There will be a post-mortem. I will post funeral details when arrangements have been made. A few weeks ago, Paul Connor had given John some of his poetry to set to music. It appears, bizarrely, that they both died on the same day. A double tragedy. Joan |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Noreen Date: 03 Feb 03 - 06:39 AM Thanks, Joan. John's death has come as a great shock. He was a good friend and someone I thought would be around for a long time to come. Though not a mudcatter, John will be known by a lot of people who come here, not just in the Manchester area but also particularly in Fleetwood, as he was a regular and enthusiastic supporter of the Fylde Folk Festival. John was very supportive of me at a time when I was finding my feet again, personally and musically, after not singing in public for many years. He gave me unconditional support and I will miss him greatly. Many happy memories. Noreen |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Micca Date: 03 Feb 03 - 10:20 AM Sad news indeed, another fine singer , I didnt know John well but well enough to Mourn his passing, "No Man Is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a part of the continent, a piece of the main.... any mans death diminishes me because I am involved with Mankind and therefore never send to ask for whom the bell tolls it Tolls for thee..." John Donne 1573-1631 |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Catrin Date: 03 Feb 03 - 02:52 PM I knew John very well. When I was in transition between Manchester and Wales, I stayed at John's house for a couple of months. John was raucous and bawdy, childish sense of humour, I was often in stitches, against my 'better' judgement at his jokes. He liked women nearly, but not quite as much, as he liked his guinness and his cigarettes. He was generous to a fault and wouldn't wittingly cause harm to a fly. And he loved kipling and Burns and mapreading and playing chess and quiznights and writing parodies. Oh and singing folk songs as well. Of course. I will miss him. Catrin |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Alio Date: 05 Feb 03 - 08:20 AM So sad. I knew John well from the clubs in Stalybridge, particularly the Platform. A lovely, humorous man, who always had time for a natter with his mates. Ali |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Noreen Date: 09 Feb 03 - 09:24 AM The Bush session on Tuesday was a very happy event; it just didn't seem right to sing sad songs for John, as everyone who knew him will understand. So the buffet, etc. at the Bush after the funeral will include a fair bit of singing and playing, and old photographs to reminisce over :0) |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Noreen Date: 09 Feb 03 - 07:14 PM Family flowers only has been requested, donations if wished to the YHA. John's ashes will be scattered somewhere in the Lake District, and perhaps a bench dedicated to him in a scenic spot. |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: GUEST,Ross Jackson Date: 13 May 03 - 02:32 PM I met John Green many times when I was in Droylsden for various folk evenings & the Droylsden Folk Festival and always found him very entertaining and generous with his time and humour. I came across this thread while doing a search for "Droylsden Folk Festival" on the internet, as I've been asked to host a small web page for them (www.droylsdenfolkfestival.org), and couldn't allow the opportunity to slip by to express my sadness at his passing and my condolences for all those who knew him well. If he is somewhere now, I'm pretty sure he's contributing enormously to all those with him having a good time - as I'm sure everyone will who raises a glass in his honour at the John Green Memorial Singaround on Friday 27th June. Cheers. |

Subject: RE: Obit: John Green From: Joan from Wigan Date: 14 May 03 - 12:07 PM Ross, that's a good web page. And here's a blue clicky: Droylsden Folk Festival Don't know yet whether I can make it to the Singaround, but if I can't I shall certainly raise a glass to him wherever I am. I'll also make sure the link goes in 'Folkal Point'. Joan |
