Subject: BS: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Helen Date: 02 Feb 03 - 10:10 PM Hi all, I've finished the Mudcat Calendar (sorry, sorry! I know it's really late). Now I need someone to volunteer to convert it to PDF format. At the moment it is a huge file, but I can break it down into smaller chunks. It is in MsPublisher 97 format at the moment. Do any of you have the programme to create PDF files? Please??!! Helen |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 03 - 01:44 PM Treewind is a Geeeek, Treewind is a geeek!! But I think you should mention that you have to print to file to get that .ps. Most apps don't allow save-as to a postscript output. A |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Ed. Date: 04 Feb 03 - 02:28 PM pdf995 (that's Gareth mentions) is IMO excellent. I've just tested it with MS Publisher, and it works well. There's some discussion of it towards the bottom of this thread. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: treewind Date: 04 Feb 03 - 03:07 PM Amos: Guilty as charged!!! But in Linux just about everything prints as postscript - as you say, print to file and you get a postscript file It so happens that I've just discovered this, when I wanted to convert some sheet music (which goes from ABC to PS) into PDF to email it to someone. (token on-topic content...) I've downloaded PDF995 at work where everybody uses Windows and my boss is very pleased with it - solves some real problems! Anahata |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Helen Date: 04 Feb 03 - 06:29 PM It worked well - except that some of my more obscure font types didn't translate but that is easily fixed. So thanks again Gareth & everyone. After I get back from the dentist in a couple of hours I'll have the fonts fixed so to all intents and purposes: Ta Da!! The Mudcat 2003 Calendar is now available! [better late than never - at least I hope I don't get eaten alive because it is so late] Helen |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Helen Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:03 PM How to drive a computer addict mad: make her mouse only go in horizontal lines but periodically make it look like the problem is fixed. Option 2: Recommend a programme to convert MsPublisher files to PDF, which then mutilates all of the fonts after conversion, and makes some - only some of them, mind you - of the pages rotate in the final file to a different orientation. Anyway, I've given up now. It's WYSIWYG (not Susan) now. Unless someone wants to have a go at converting it using a *proper* programme. Having now uninstalled PDF995 I think my mouse has finally recovered from it's mental aberration - which has been plaguing me for over 24 hours. So while Mousie might have recovered, my mental state is totally up to s**t! I need a stiff drink or three to get rid of this stress headache. My computer-fixing hubby is off up the country for a few days so I've been struggling with this all on my own. I think I've beaten the problem though. Oh hell! Spoke too soon. It just went haywire again. Maybe the gremlins inside the mouse are having a wee bit of a joke, eh? I'll teach them to joke with me. Where is the rat poison? Anyway, the pdf file is over 2 meg in size, and the MsPublisher file is about 9 meg. If anyone wants to ride in on a white charger and save the day, let me know. Please. Otherwise I'll just leave it as it is. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:16 PM You should be able to save it as a postscript file(s) then email them to Nicole. Before saving it you'd better convert any difficult fonts to typical fonts because Nicole won't be able to edit a post script file once she receives it. It'll leave holes in your work if she doesn't have them. (Just fought that Publisher to Acrobat battle myself a couple of weeks ago.) SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: NicoleC Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:17 PM Helen, I'll PM you my email address -- I have all the requisite software. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: NicoleC Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:23 PM I have gobs of fonts -- I don't mind trying the file as-is if you don't want to go in and change stuff. If I'm missing a font, we can always try again. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:27 PM If you both have Publisher then you can leave out the postscript part until the fonts all look good. No need for pack-and-go either. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: NicoleC Date: 05 Feb 03 - 11:07 PM PostScript will be easier, but I have Publisher, too. (2002, but I think I have 97 somewhere.) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Feb 03 - 12:31 AM MS Publisher should never be used for anything more complicated than printing modest leaflets, parish newsletters and the like; it doesn't export well into any other format. People occasionally send me stuff made in MSP, blissfully unaware that it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot for commercial applications. And THEY NEVER INCLUDE THE FONTS! You need to send all the fonts you've used to whoever has undertaken to convert the MSP file into something usable. That's an invariable rule when sending dtp files of any kind (unless you've converted the fonts to curves, which MSP can't do). It may be that your email program will refuse to take font files as an attachment; your best bet is to copy all the fonts concerned to a zip file, and send that. Then they can install any fonts you've used that they don't have, convert to pdf, and then dump whatever they don't want to keep. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Gareth Date: 06 Feb 03 - 09:47 AM Sorry if your having troubles Helene- PDF995 works well for me - but then I don't use any unusual fonts. Gareth |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Feb 03 - 12:49 PM Malcolm, you are correct, of course. Ideally I'd be using Adobe Pagemaker for my layout work and PhotoShop instead of PhotoDraw for images. My computer at work came with the MS Office suite and it's an extra effort to get the Adobe installed, but I'm working on getting someone to order it. At home I don't have it and would have to purchase it myself. I got the MS stuff for $5 a CD (it was $25 for the office suite). That Adobe stuff if pricey, even in the academic packages. If beggars can't be choosers, then you need to learn as many tricks as you can to make this inferior stuff work. How would you go about sending a font to someone? Is it in a separate named file somewhere? What type of file, and how large are they? For bigger projects we have things laid out by the office of publications folks at the university. They always send fonts to the press when they forward their work for printing, but I've never known how they do it. That's why I suggested above to use the typical fonts that everyone generally has. But it would be nice to branch out. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Feb 03 - 01:16 PM The fonts should be in C:\WINDOWS\FONTS. The system is designed to make it difficult for you to copy fonts directly; one method is as follows: Open Windows Explorer in two separate windows; the fonts directory in one, a destination directory of your choice somewhere else in the other. Locate the fonts you want to copy; drag them from one Explorer window to the other. This will copy them with their proper file-names instead of the descriptions Windows uses. Once they're copied to the new location, use Winzip or a similar utility to create a compressed archive file, then drag the font files into it. The zip file won't be very big, and can be sent as an email attachment. At the other end, the recipient opens the zip file and extracts the fonts to their own font folder. MSP will then display correctly, and conversion to pdf should be relatively painless. If you don't already have a zipping utility, evaluation copies of Winzip cost nothing, and last indefinitely. I registered mine, but you don't have to. Professional dtp software will "bundle" fonts with the page layouts for you, and it's possible that MSP will do that, too (I've never used it) but most people who use it seem to be unaware of such a facility -if it exists- and of the necessity of including fonts when sending the file to someone else. The above method is messy, but it works. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Ed. Date: 06 Feb 03 - 01:29 PM Helen, I think that your problem with pdf995 is probably similar to the one John in Brisbane had in the thread I linked to above. The solution is to open the Printers folder (either via Control Panel or Start, Settings), right click on the pdf995 icon, select properties, click the font tab and choose "Always use True Type Fonts" I think that will solve your problem. I'm not sure about the page orientation issue, but I'd think it'd more likely be a problem with MS Publisher than pdf995. I'd be happy to have a look if you want to email it to me. Ed |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Ed. Date: 06 Feb 03 - 01:43 PM Just to add to what Malcolm said about fonts: Size wise, they are quite small, the ones on my system vary between 35K and 130K, so if you are only sending one or two, it may not be worth zipping them. Also, most fonts have different files for bold, italic and bold/italic, so be sure to send all those used. (Many programs can generate bold and italic from the plain text font, but the results aren't as good) The files have the suffix of either .fon, or more often .ttf (true type font) Ed |

Subject: RE: Tech: Help: convert Mudcat calendar to PDF From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Feb 03 - 02:01 PM Very good! Yes, it pays to poke around in these programs to see if they have utilities for doing something like transporting fonts. I image Publisher's Pack-and-Go feature is how it should be done, because it can be opened by someone who doesn't necessarily have the fonts in question. So I should retract the advice about just sending the file, and perhaps it would be best sent prepackaged by the sender's program. SRS |
