Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: Jeri Date: 31 Jan 03 - 08:07 PM I wrote and posted this about 3 years ago. Here it is again. (Sorry) Groundhog Day (Apologies to Martina McBride/Independence Day) Well he seemed all right by dawn's early light Though he looked barely better than dead He tried to pretend the snow was all gone But an icicle fell on his head And I was hiding behind my window In my warm house determined to stay So I oggled him then as he crawled from his den On Groundhog Day Well word gets around in a small, small town They said he was going to come out They watched him emerge and stand on the verge Of begining to put winter to rout Some folks whispered and some folks talked As he saw that he blocked the sun's ray And he just turned around, went back into the ground On Groundhog Day (CHORUS) Let come the spring, Let the birdies sing Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning Let's stop shoveling snow, let the grasses grow Roll the snow away, let the children play It's Groundhog Day Well I remember one year it was cloudy and drear By the time that the groundhog came out He sniffed the air, at the groud he did stare "No shadow" we all began to shout And spring came no faster, though the small furry bastard Predicted it would, in his way Talk about your folklore... It's Groundhog Day |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: gnu Date: 01 Feb 03 - 06:54 AM Well, there's no way the little bugger is going to see his shadow here this morning because it's snowing a good clip. The forecast includes a turn to ice pellets or freezing rain before a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon with a high of 2C... soooo, I guess winter is over... and I'm a duck. |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Feb 03 - 07:21 AM Where's my Groundhog Day card Conrad? Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: gnu Date: 01 Feb 03 - 07:26 AM Hey !!! It's not groundhog day. How dare you steal a day from me while I'm still asleep ! More tea... or less Bud. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Feb 03 - 07:32 AM I don't get mail on Sunday gnu, so if my card doesn't arrive from Conrad today, I'll know the little pissant and his dumbfuck car are not really into the great traditions of the day as he sogloriously proclaimed after Christmas. Never trust an orange pissant with a fucked up car. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: gnu Date: 01 Feb 03 - 08:29 AM I recall one, vaguely, wherein.... all mixed in with greasy grimey gopher guts, little birdies dirty feet... more tea, after I shovel. |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: Richie Date: 02 Feb 03 - 07:33 AM The legend of Groundhog Day is based on an old Scottish couplet: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year." Happy Groundhog day! Any news about Phil's prediction? Richie |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: Bobert Date: 02 Feb 03 - 08:36 AM Not to change the subject but does anyone have a decent recipe for groundhog meatloaf, other than the same old boring catsup, onions, dryed milk and dryed mustard. Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: *daylia* Date: 02 Feb 03 - 08:39 AM Bobert is that recipe called 'Hossenfeffer'? (or however you'd spell it!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: mg Date: 02 Feb 03 - 04:24 PM Is today a significant day in general? I remember it was the day we got our throats blessed with 2 candles crossed...St. Blaise Day..so we wouldn't choke on fish bones among other things. One of the truly great rituals of the Catholic church...gone at least where I am...mg |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: GUEST,Guest Date: 03 Feb 03 - 05:14 AM Here in Spain we still celebrate st. Blaise, Mary Garvey. The ritual is not as sophisticated as that in which they place candles both sides of your throats, though (I've seen that in documentaries about Ireland, so I guess you are posting from there?). In some places there are street markets and fairs where you can buy a tiny string you have to tie around your neck to seek for protection against sore throat. All help welcome when you live on speaking to others! Also, the proverbs say that if "storks can be seen on this day" (coming from their winter refuge), the rest of winter will be mild. A sort of Groundstork Day, so to say. |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: gnu Date: 03 Feb 03 - 07:20 AM We still have no report here in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Search & rescue continue digging. But, with mild temperatures, heavy rain turning the deep snow into mountains of semi-solid water, and flooding, hope is fading for the furry guy... |

Subject: RE: BS: Groundhog Day From: GUEST,texasgoodwin@netzero.com Date: 18 Feb 03 - 10:33 PM My mother-in-law sang a similar version of your groundhog song for me. "Shoulder up my axe and whistle for my dog. Pull to the wildwood to catch me a groundhog. 3,2,in a log and one in a stump, Come on, Daddy, with the ten foot pole, twist this groundhog outta that hole. Two for me and one for you, come on Daddy, with the ten foot pole. Twist this groundhog outta this hole. Yonder comes granny 'round the hill Snickering and grinning and the groundhog grease dripping off her chin. Cat's in the cupboard and the meat is fat. Oh, my Lord, I can't eat that." Do you know the source of this song? |
