In 1990 we heard an interesting song from a floor singer at the Telford Folk Festival. We caught most of it on video but the start is missing.
Does anyone recognise it, or know who wrote it, or what it's called?
It was sung by a small grey-haired woman with a deep voice.

(1st line missing)
I spend me mornings sleeping and the night-time on me feet.
Each afternoon I look for work, I will not stoop to theft,
But pride don't keep me warm enough, and pride's all I got left.

I spent me time at tailoring until me eyes went bad
And I felt that we could make it on the savings that we had
But me husband died ten years ago, still I could pay the rent,
But the landlord kept on raising it until it all was spent.

So I ended in a shelter with the other homeless ones:
The sick ones and the dying, someone's daughters, someone's sons,
The violent and the crazy whether white or brown or black
'Twas the nearest thing to hell on earth and I'm never going back.

I keep this bag beneath me coat to hide me one good dress,
And I put it on to look for work - me other stuff's a mess,
And I wash in public washrooms, let the others stare and blink:
It's hard enough to look for work and harder when you stink.

Now the churches in this city that the rich folk all attend,
They call me there on Sunday and they tell me God's me friend,
They give me soup on Saturday and give me things for free,
They give me soup on Saturday and call it charity.

So listen to me, people, before you walk away
Pretending you don't see me, listen hard to what I say:
This world is not so small a place as once it used to be
And whatever we create here touches you as well as me.
Yes, whatever we create here touches you as well as me.

Robyn

Has nobody heard it?
I wonder if Angela Gradwell had something to do with it?

the best bag lady song i know is by Sarah Elizabeth Campbell
called Geraldine and Ruthie May////
...with their bundles and their bags..
with their trinkets and their rags..
with their old carts pulled by hands as frail as bird's wings...

I think Jeannie Lewis of Oz (small, with a powerful voice and a long music history) and Frankie Armstrong of England (ditto) and Claudia Schmidt of Canada, have all done Bag Lady songs - if that's of any possible assistance!!!

Cheers! R-J

Amazing!
After looking for years, the singer has turned up here!
In New Zealand!
And she's a catter! Treaties 1!
Theresa, from the Shellback Chorus, who sang at the Auckland Folk Festival last weekend.
Her song collection is back home in England so we'll have to wait a little longer for the words.

What is truly amazing is that many of these homeless people, frail and wispy as they may look continue to exist during weather that drives the most hearty of us inside, while living on some of the meanest streets in the universe. We have the usual group of homeless people, a local shelter that many spurn, preferring the unfettered life of a nearby woods, even in winters. Granted this winter, in this locale, has been very mild, in spite of the weatherman's threats, it can't be fun living rough at any time, especially these days.

What have we, as humanity, come to that we allow any person to live this way, whether by choice or by circumstance? "Even as ye do it to the least of mine . . ." And that one cuts BOTH ways.

Dave

So, Little Robyn, do we now know the song title and author's name?

Not yet. Theresa is still touring in NZ and her songs are in boxes in Britain. She couldn't remember the details.
Maybe in a week or so....

We've nearly got it - tho' Theresa has been very busy and hasn't managed to find the words on paper yet. She thinks the first line is:
"My name is(Annie ?)and I'm living on the street."
The name is something like Annie Parker or Walker or something similar. Probably not Annie Walker because she was living at the Rovers Return at the time!
